ugh...fairly simple concept.

Your computer(s) essentially have 2 IP address. One that the internet sees, like the one that shows next to your post. The second IP address is a local IP address that is only accessible within YOUR network. The internet IP will always be the same no matter what computer you are using in your home. The local IP must be unique.

Local IP addresses are most commonly in the form of 192.168.1.xxx

Well, I am making my network here a secured network (which I was asked not to, but I hav no idea who else could be using my network). Which of the following 5 options should I chose as to what type of security I place on the network?

Security Options
None
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
WPA-PSK [TKIP]
WPA2-PSK [AES]
WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]

Ideally anything WPA2 is best. However, some hardware/software is not compatible. If it's a Wireless G device, WPA2 is best.

So, either of the bottom two options then?

I have a Linksys router, and so far, I've had no problems whatsoever with WEP. But it's your router, so go with any security method you want.

And I'd hate to change the subject a little, but if you want to watch any of my WTVT clips, I created a new Youtube account just for that purpose. I'm going to try and have most of the videos in 16:9 and some in HD. Here's the link: http://youtube.com/user/WTVTFox13Fan

WEP is a joke, and is crackable in less than 30 seconds. However, it's better than no encryption at all.

Better yet, set up a MAC access list...that way ONLY the computers you own can access the network at all.

Well, I set up a secured network with the option
WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]
My laptop doesn't seem to want to connect to it

What he said.  I'm forced to WEP because of a legacy device, but once that goes away, boom, heading for WPA.  MAC address list is great, too...remember to modify it every time you add a wireless device to the network (I currently have ten, for example.)

Guys, Breaking News if your NBC Station is an O&O (just got this from a local meteorologists blog): NBC, which owns the Weather Channel, is considering a move to replace the local weathercasters on the stations they own with mets from the Weather Channel. NBC owns 10 TV stations in the large cities. This move would save money but sacrifice the local flavor of the weather. Here is what the Executive VP of Programming of NBC said.... "We're examining it. We have to figure it out. We haven't yet. But there is clearly the opportunity to do that. I can tell you we're looking at that opportunity."
This could be the future of local TV weather. Large companies would supply local forecasts for a number of different stations around the country.

Care to offer some "proof" of that news? :fear:

I won't have to worry about that w/ the NBC affiliate here, it's owned by Gannett or something like that.
