they closed Circuit City, Linens N Things, and a Borders store this year.

I miss CompUSA..
I bet you the already suffering Echelon Mall is doing even worse in this troubled economy. There's lots of vacancy around here right now. Car dealerships have also either closed or moved to different locations.

Here, at the North Hanover Mall, they built a Boscov's and were nearly ready to open it, and Boscov's pulled out because they went bankrupt. So now there is this huge addition to the mall sitting here vacant. What a waste.

The Colonie Center Mall near me is doing pretty well.  It got some new renovations lately, which is why it's bustling with customers when I visit.  However, I see that my story is more of the exception, which certainly shows how troubling things have become for our country's economy.

Why are malls so empty these days? Economy? I went to the mall this afternoon and there were very few if any people...I remember seeing many people strolling around before
I don't know, the Neshaminy Mall in Bensalem always seems crowded even late at night, yet they still are closing earlier.

I"ve been to Echelon quite a number of times. That mall is pretty dead, I only visit the Boscovs there. Other than that it seems the food court is quite popular there. It's in a pretty onscured area too

I think that's one of the biggest reasons why the mall has been dead for nearly 10 years. It's far from any major roads like how most malls are, the closest probably being Route 73, which is still at least 10-15 minutes away. Not even close to any major bridges or freeways like I-295 or the NJ Turnpike. The recently renovated the property by demolishing half the mall and adding adjacent stores with a town center-esque theme, but I doubt that will help much, at least for the mall portion.

I was there once in 2007, and like you said, other than the food court area, the mall has definitely seen better days.

There's an article on Echelon at Labelscar.com, including pictures.
