I just switched back to the old format and now they are telling us that everyone has to switch to beta channels???? WTF. YT is dead.

You knew that this was inevitable though after YouTube developers began praising their beta channels, Ana.  I finally upgraded mine just to get used to the new settings.  It seems alright for now, but I would prefer to keep the older channel layout if allowed a choice.

The part I hate is that the beta channels aren't transparent. I want my background to be shown as well.
BTW I just went back to the new layout...mind as well get used to it. >_>

That's my plan as well. Enjoy the much more straight forward and easier-for-slower-computers-to-load channels while you have them!

Well, my guess is that it is the same reason TWC made all the changes to Intellistar and NBC made all the changes to TWC that they did:
They like it, and they can get away with it since there is nothing anyone can do about it except complain.
