For those who lived in the New York area, I had no idea Sue Simmons' final day on air was last Friday. I had heard about her contract not being renewed due to her $5 million salary back in March, but Scarborough makes a similiar amount (according to several news sites) o I don't see why NBC would can her solely on salary. Either way it's really sad. She and Chuck had been on air on WNBC for over 32 years. Simmons had talent that no other anchor could replicate. She was classy, professional, unpredictable, dangerous, knowledgeable all at the same time. I see now Shiba Russell has taken over her spot on the 11pm newscast. I like Russell but she's no replacement for Simmons. New York has lost a true talent. It is my hope that another news station will pick her up soon as it was not a voluntary decision to leave the network.
And yes, we all know about the on air slipup 4 years ago. That still hasn't stopped loyal viewers from tuning in. WNBC is the only channel I watch for the news when I go to New York every other week so I guess its more time for Shiba then.
This is just another example of NBC at its finest.
