I live in California, and my parents said the other day I shouldn't go to school because they think I'll get infected with the swine flu, (which none of the people in my school had as of now), but the thing is that it is likely that it will be spread to the San Francisco Bay Area, and there is a high chance that some of us will get in contact with it. Basically all I can say for now is that the swine flu is deadly and serious. I heard this from a few other people from school. There are many Mexicans in our school and as Gil said, we must be careful who we're interacting with, but I'd have to disagree, because if that person doesn't have swine flu, it's ok to interact with him, but don't get TOO close to that person. As of now I can trace this flu from where its origin is from. This is a guess, but I can be wrong though. The pig had a common cold and the farmers got in contact with the cold and the disease got deadly, and then the farmer came in contact with other people, and then the people from that point spread this flu onto other people.

Another thing, just now I found out that some people from schools in Pittsburg/Bay Point/Contra Costa County got affected with this flu, and schools are closing for the rest of this week + next week, which means that the swine flu is getting worse and worser. I go to a Charter School in Hayward, CA, and there's no reported cases in the Hayward Unified School District (which my school isn't a part of) and as of now, our teachers (Mr. Fauteux, Ms. Farrand, Ms. Crocker) are giving us hand sanitizer so we can cleanse our hands so that we don't get in contact with the swine flu. What I'm doing everyday before going to school is taking a shower so that I can get my good hygeine on, so that I have a less likely chance of catching the flu.

Guys......WASH YOUR HANDS!!!!!!!!!! Protect yourself from this flu.

Where I'm at in CA, people are taking extra precautions than those who are up north AFAIK.
Like I said, some cases here in Imperial County are minor. Nothing bad as of now.

I would not be surprised if they count every case of Influenza as "Swine Flu".

Not all flu is Swine Flu. Stop scaring people.

They won't do that. This flu is far different than the standard flu. That's why its so easy to identify. The standard human flu does not have bird or swine components.

The only thing really bothering and worrying me about this is it is going around when my wife is pregnant.

A case has been confirmed in Omaha (I'm not in Omaha itself but am in the metro area), along with another couple probable cases.

My college has released a statement about the swine flu, and that the Swine Flu alert has now been raised up to 5.

Quote
April 30: Swine Influenza Update
The Swine Flu Alert was raised to Phase 5 yesterday, a signal that a pandemic may be imminent and now is the time to planned mitigation measures.

IVC continues to follow the official Imperial County direction and our campus remains open. As of 08:00 April 30th, all county schools are open and the number of confirmed cases in Imperial County remains at 5 according to a local Public Health representative. The United States now has 109 confirmed cases and only one death.

Today at 1:00 ET, Sebelius (Sec. of HHS) and Napolitano (Homeland Security) will provide information on a live webcast on http://www.hhs.gov/

Best Practices:

Know the facts
Frequent hand washing
Cover all coughs with tissue or your sleeve, not a bare hand
Dismiss students who have flu-like symptoms – cough, fever, general body ache, etc.
If Faculty or Staff have flu-like symptoms – stay home

Best Source of Information: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

So far here in Imperial County, there are 5 cases but neither of them are major cases. 0 in Duck Centro so far, so schools here are remained open. (Thanks God. *phew*)
BTW, there is one confirmed case at my hometown (San Bernardino, CA) and several schools are closed until May 7.

I totally agree Gil, there are many other things to worry about than just the H1 N1 Virus.

Our First case of Swine Flu in Georgia

Georgia Swine Flu Patient Was In Mexico

Quote
LAGRANGE, Ga. -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed a case of swine flu Thursday at West Georgia Medical System Hospital in LaGrange in Troup County.

“Today’s confirmed case of the H1N1 flu in Georgia is a reason for precaution, not panic. I want to stress that it is an isolated case," said Gov. Sonny Perdue.

"The State of Georgia has worked diligently over the past several years to prepare for a situation like this, and we are partnering with local and federal officials to respond appropriately," Perdue said.

The patient, a 30-year-old female, is from Kentucky, but was visiting family members in LaGrange after returning from a trip to Cancun, Mexico on April 21. She has been hospitalized in LaGrange since April 26.

Mexico has been identified as the source of the swine flu outbreak.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Jeff Dore interviewed Jerry Fulks, CEO of West Georgia Medical System Hospital, live on Action News at Noon and Fulks said the patient was put into isolation on April 26 and was still there Thursday.

"The staff that works with her are using masks, gowns and other protection devices," said Fulks.

He said the hospital is not under quarantine.

"Our hospital is open; there has been no lockdown," Fulks said. "We continue to serve the needs of our patients."

Fulks said the patient's family in LaGrange has been checked and tested negative for swine flu.

Troup County health officials said Wednesday night during a public meeting that a sample from the patient was sent to the CDC for testing. The sample came back positive for swine flu.

The CDC lists cases of swine flu in at least 11 other states including Arizona, California, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, and Texas.

In Alabama, officials shut down schools for about 31,000 students in Madison County because of two probable cases of swine flu.

Some schools also closed in California, Michigan and New York.

Well, I had mentioned it, and it has happened.......

Second Swine Flu Case Confirmed In Michigan
The federal government has confirmed Michigan's second case of swine flu, this one from Ottawa County.

The state said Thursday the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found the probable case was indeed the H1N1 virus. The 34-year-old woman from Ottawa County west of Grand Rapids was released from a hospital last week.

The state is continuing to test other suspected cases. Probable cases are being sent to the CDC to determine if they are positive.

Michign Establishing Swine Flu Testing Facility
Michigan officials hope the state can conduct its own swine flu tests within a few days instead of sending probable cases to the federal government.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is shipping Michigan and other states kits to check for H1N1 influenza A on their own. That should lead to quicker test results.

The CDC on Thursday confirmed Michigan's second case of swine flu. The 34-year-old woman from Ottawa County west of Grand Rapids was released from a hospital last week.

State officials do not know her travel history yet. But state Department of Community Health Director Janet Olszewski says many newly infected people did not travel to Mexico or other places with known cases of H1N1.

How can you say after 250+ reported worldwide cases a pandemic is imminent? That I dont understand... As for the coverage... Media needs something to talk about all the time. They had a little break with Obamas 100th day and now its back to swine flu. Who wants to hear about the crappy state of the economy or people getting shot? Oh wait.... people who want the news!!

250 people out of 6 billion in the world? This is huge! Sorry, but this is no where near where near as bad as what they are saying.

I did learn a new word: Pandemic. Up until this, I only knew of an epidemic. It must be boring at the media headquarters.

There's actually three levels for describing a disease:  endemic, epidemic, and pandemic.  The level of threat goes from lowest to highest in the order I listed.
