Serious desktop computer issue

Well, I hope this is okay to start this topic here.

Anyway, I am having a major problem with my desktop computer. Halfway through the rebooting process, I get a weird message that appears:

Warning!!! USB Device over current detected!!!
Please remove over-current USB device!!!
System will shutdown in         seconds!!04

The 04 is a coutdown that starts at 20.

My desktop was fine at 6:45 PM EDT. It was acting slow, so I shut it down through the start menu. As soon as I press the power on button, it shut down as soon as I turned it on.

I called the Staples location a couple miles over, and long story short, a waste of a phone call got the guy I talked to for 30 seconds to say it sounds like a hardware issue. Mike brought it up to me that it could be a motherboard failure, which may be the case.

Anyone else know what could be going on?

I bought this desktop brand new in August 2007, and it has had numerous issues since. I have put at least half of the original worth of the computer into fixing it, including $100 into reformatting it twice.

Well normally, the external hard drive, wireless receiver for the wireless mouse and keyboard, and the printer. I removed them all, and the issue is still ongoing.

I suspect you have a short in one of the connectors. This isnt very good. If your computer is old enough to have dedicated keyboard and mouse inputs, go to your bios and disable your USB ports. Use a keyboard and mouse with those connections if you have one. You likely will need a new motherboard

A few other steps you might try.
1. Have you installed any updates to your BIOS? If so try to roll them back. If not try and see if there is a new version you can update to.
2. Unplug your computer, hold the power button down for 10secs. Restart. See if that helps at all

How old is this computer?

Well, we got rid of our wired mice and keyboards years ago. I bought the computer brand new in August 2007. Martin, I am not that tech savy

3. Try cleaning the computers ports with some compressed air.
4. Check the BIOS and see if you have the option under boot to  "Halt on all errors". Tell it not to if you can

If this is a cheap computer, my recommendations would be to buy another cheap/decent PC and just swap the hard drive out. You wont loose any data. Otherwise you can attempt to replace the motherboard if you know how or hire someone to repair it.

I keep taking too long to update my post lol. It was a very expensive computer I bought brand new in August 2007. I am planning on taking it to Staples, so I can have them replace the motherboard, but the issue here is coming up with the money for it. As I mentioned, I have put in a ridiculous amount of money to this computer since I have had it.

Thanks for at least trying to help with this. I suspected that it was a motherboard failure, but wasn't sure.

Yea just one of those random flukes. I looked it up but couldn't find much you could do in your situation.

No idea how it happened so quickly though. My computer was fine before I shut it down 45 minutes before the issue began.

Would doing a system restore do any help?

Not for a physical hardware issue
