Is this or any other site good for booking hotels?

Are you a member of AAA? I'd use them. That way if you get a bad hotel (or they loose your reservation), you can likely get a refund.

Try AAA then priceline. Ive booked hotels and flights with both. Priceline usually has been the best compared to the other sites
