^Sorry, but I couldn't resist with the video!
Oh damn these corrupted, wall street bought out Washington politicians for being stupid enough to not even come together/vote on something as simple and clear as day as tax rates!

All I'm going to say is:

1) Hopefully we will get a deal done within the next couple days so we will - to stick with the pun - be holding to the edge of the cliff with only our fingertips.

2) I'm surprised people are surprised that we are in this mess, after the mess in 2011 regarding the debt ceiling.

3) The blame goes equally, both ways - Republicans for refusing to vote tonight, and stepping away from a compromise deal Boehner made with Obama, and the President and Democrats for being stubborn on the amount of spending cuts. It is sickening to see this unfold, and even more knowing that the new Congress is not going to look much different from right now.

4) Watch our credit rating go down again, from an AA+ to just AA. Congress is holding the U.S. economy hostage and they know it.
Tiddlywinks.

Not surprised, just utterly pathetic.

They should have gotten Rick Perry involved in these fiscal talks, there would have been three agencies of government goin' adios in the sequester cuts, commerce, education, and.............................................uhhhhhhhhhh I don't remember the last one.  Oops. :blushing:

EDIT: The Senate saying they might vote tonight before midnight on the tax increases/cuts measure.

What exactly is going on? I never understand the politics behind this. Does it just mean higher taxes for us to pay or something.

To keep it short and simple, when it comes to the taxes yes. As much as 3,400 a year for everyone, in addition to automatic cuts in the government. The positive to it is that it's retroactive so if a deal is done this week these things can be prevented from taking effect, but if congress keeps on dragging their feet for weeks and months on this, the negative is we slide right back into a recession by Spring/Summer.

You're all way behind on the news.  They have a deal reached and can vote in the Senate tonight, the House on Tuesday, and then backdate everything to where it really doesn't impact everyone.  Here's the news if you don't believe me:

Actually I knew about the Senate vote three hours before I made my last post, but it doesn't really matter, we still technically went over the cliff because we missed the 31st deadline and the House hasn't voted on anything yet! So who knows if they'll peddle paddle their feet or not on this.

This is also very bad for those who receive federal financial aid to pay off their financial expenses. The cuts will tremendously impact the number of Pell Grants being awarded to and the Subsidized/Perkins Loans could see even higher interest rates.

For the specific numbers, the bill in the Senate passed by a resounding 89-9 - that is about as bipartisan as you can get.

Patrick, although I agree with your post, it really doesn't matter if something passes now, because this entire fiasco has just been postponed until the end of February. Congress will continue its role of doing almost nothing until a few weeks before the debt ceiling deadline, and then this fight will happen all over again. And again when they postpone it at the last minute in April. Then June. And so on. Unless we can really address the United State's spending addiction and debt issue with a well-thought out and long term solution, this is now going to be a regular - and ugly - political event.

Finally, yes, taxes went up for everybody. Everyone here is going to see taxes up at least 2% out of their income checks now. The taxes for incomes above $400,000 a year went up as well. Unfortunately, spending has still not been addressed. Let's face it, people, not everyone is going to like what is eventually going to be proposed to be cut - especially if it involves federal aid. Reducing our spending is going to hurt a lot of people, but at this point folks will have to just deal with it.

As to what is going to get cut, I strongly suspect Social Security is going to be a big, big issue, as it will be a major factor to our debt if it is not addressed. The proposed solution is to raise the eligibility age, which could save upwards of half a trillion dollars. Foreign aid is also an issue. Military spending has been on the table for decades. I suspect some social programs are going to be chopped as well. We have to find $16 trillion somewhere, and it's not going to come from just tax increases.

Taxes are going up a lot more than people think. 2% is the tip of the iceberg and its not just for the rich people. Americans are going to find a rude awakening when they have to start paying Capital Gains and the Alternative Minimum Tax.

Social programs are bringing this country to its knees. Sorry but life isn't fair and everyone doesn't have the right to college and unlimited medical care. In a perfect world when the country has the money to spare then we might want to look into it. We as Amerian's have come to expect so much yet give so little. We are getting dumber, fatter and poorer by the day. What a world.

Looks like it passed the House. Yay for no spending cuts....  <_<

The bill passed, so now it's a battle over disaster relief for Sandy.

Markets soared after the news - the Dow jumped a whopping 308 points today.

America has been Fundamentally Bankrupt since 1933 and is only Sovereign und er whats called Emergency War Powers. Obamacare will bring the US to its knees, and EWP wont save the U.S. this time. We will be a possession of China by 2016, guaranteed.
