Whats wrong with Microsoft opening a store? I think its a good idea to have direct interaction between the company and its customers. If they do it right, then this may work out for them.

But... Microsoft is a software company (I know, Zune, XBox, and other crap). To open a store just seems. Weird.

Sony has its own store (although not retail chain), Apple has one, so it wouldn't be too enexpected to have a Microsoft store.

They're not software-only companies. (Zune and XBox aren't enough of their sales to consider them as a hardware company.)
