Laptop Fan keeps going on and off...
« on: April 03, 2010, 11:02:56 PM »
Ever since I bought my HP/Vista laptop last August, its fan has been annoying the hell out of me. It randomly goes on and off even when it isn't hot at all. It also goes on at different speeds. Sometimes it's quiet, and sometimes it's really loud. It can also remain running for minutes, or it goes on and off every couple seconds. Is there a solution to this, perhaps a way I can disable the fan? I'm really getting aggravated by this.  <_<

Disabling the fan is NOT recommended. The laptop is doing its job by providing sufficient cooling. You could install CoreTemp and keep an eye on your temps, usually if it goes above 40*C, the fans kick on.. At least for me anyway. My laptop will NOT turn on if the cpu fan is not present, and it has shut down on me twice because of a faulty fan.

I don't know, it's been doing it since I bought the laptop brand new. I tend to think the fan is just running for no reason. I don't think it has to do with the temperatures. It goes on randomly as soon as I turn on the laptop... even if I haven't had it running for awhile.

It  could either ne dust ridden as Ana said above or your CPU usage could be high as my laptop often does that with a high CPU use

Yeah, I've been having problems with mine too. Figures, I'm just used to it. I bought a chiller mat (two of them... one I bought on Black Friday stopped working) for it, and that seems to be helping. I would recommend that for you Mike, if you haven't already bought one.

Make sure you allow enough room between your fans and any other objects so that the laptop can ventilate properly.  Doing that step alone can help out a lot, and a chiller mat would be your next option if the first step doesn't work.

Sorry for bumping, but this is something I've just noticed over the past few nights...

It seems for 45 seconds exactly, my fan goes off at full speed, and it's NOT because my laptop is hot because the bottom doesn't feel hot at all. Then it blows at about half as fast for 90 seconds. I know this is not normal, because I've used other laptops and they behave nothing like this one. It happens regardless of the temperature, and even when I have it on a flat surface where air can circulate. This scenario happens about every 5-10 minutes. This is especially pissing me off since I use this laptop to Skype and others can hear the fan when I chat on it. Can anyone help?

Are you running any other CPU-intense applications when this happens?  If you are, try only running Skype by itself to see if that helps.  If you're not running any other applications, it could be the entire cooling unit. which includes your fans and pieces of metal that help conduct heat away from the processor and the hard drive.  I remember having my whole entire cooling unit replaced on a laptop when it was getting a little hot, and it helped.

The fan goes off whether I'm running a ton of programs or if it's just sitting idle... i hope it's not the cooling unit :pinch:

You may want to find some way to monitor the temperature of the CPU or see what mode your laptop is set for in terms of delivering power when demand is light or heavy.  I'm not an expert on how to do these steps, so hopefully someone else can help you.

I have this same exact issue. The fan never goes off, but I tweaked the settings a bit so the fan can only run on low speed now. (This is helpful because now when I'm calling on skype, noone can hear the fan anymore)

There has to be more to this... I can't go that route in my settings, it just lists the generic stuff in the advanced options
