iBook problems

Lately I have been having problems with my 3-4 year old iBook, running OS 10.4. Many programs, including the Finder, freeze up and sometimes even Force Quitting doesn't do the trick. I have to hold the power button to restart it. It then works good for awhile but then I have these problems again. Does anyone know what I could do to solve these problems? This computer is no longer in warranty (it expired last fall), so I'd hate to pay big bucks to get it fixed at the Apple store. Thanks.

Mike, didn't you say you recently upgraded to Firefox 3? Maybe thats what's doin' it.  :unsure:

No, this problem has been occuring since well before I downloaded FF 3.

Matt, the fans seem to be working fine. Sometimes when I start the computer though, the fans go really loud for a second or two.

The fan thing is normal, I've had that happen with all of my laptops (PC or Mac).

When's the last time you did a complete system start-over? Usually its good to format the drive and start over, every once in a while. Other than that, I have no idea, i've never had that happen before. :no:

You mean restoring the computer by doing a fresh reinstall of Mac OS? I've never done that before with this, so maybe I'll try that. I have an external drive to put all my files in.

My question is, would doing this install Panther back into my computer? That's what it originally came with. If so, I would spend hours restoring my computer, then installing Tiger onto it, THEN install the latest update for Tiger.

In that case, then you should definitely do that. I read in a computer mag once, that you do a complete factory-restore once a year. So if you've had yours for 3-4 years, then it would definitely be advisable to do so. B)

EDIT: Yes, in your case, it would. But it would still be a good thing to do.

Double EDIT: You could jsut install Tiger and skip the whole Panther installation.

Before you do it, I just realized that if you had iLife when you first bought the computer, It would ONLY be on the original restore disks. So you would have to go Panther, then upgrade to Tiger if you still wanted to utilize iLife.

I don't really use iLife, so it wouldn't matter to me if I lose it when reinstalling Tiger.
