SR, out of curiosity, what kind of HP notebook do you have? And are you happy with it? I'm in the market for a new one, and am looking to spend $900-approx. $1200. I've been looking at Dell, just because I love the custom options/upgrades, but I've seen some nice HPs out there. Thanks!

I have an HP laptop (a dv6000z) and while it is a decent laptop, I've had various problems with is. First off, it gets insanely warm; I've actually burnt myself with it a few times. And the overheating lead to the next two problems. I got the laptop last July, and in January, the wireless stopped working. Then in April, the graphics adapter died. I later learned both were due to overheating. Luckily, HP fixed the problem for free, but I was without the laptop for a few weeks.

I also have a Dell laptop (an Inspiron 1525), and I like it a lot more than the HP. It runs much cooler than the HP; I attribute that to the Core 2 Duo in the Dell, which runs inherently cooler than the Turion 64 X2, which was in my HP. Also, both laptops are 15.4" models, and I find the Dell slightly lighter than the HP.

Not necessarily. My iBook can get really hot especially during the summer. It causes the fans to speed up and makes it sound like you are sitting in front of a 20 year old desktop. This happens even if I have it sitting on my desk with nothing blocking the air vents.

I have an HP dv9815 that I just got the day before Memorial Day. Everything's nice so far except for the fact that the mousepad driver doesn't allow you to middle click by pressing the left and right buttons simultaneously. I was actually going to buy a cheaper Toshiba, but I found out that Toshiba and Sony don't even offer scrolling on their mousepads, and that's a must, so I went with this HP, my second choice.

Also, it's a 17" widescreen, so there's a numberpad on the right side of the keyboard; it's all well and good, but I'm a bit disturbed by the right-hand "shift" key only being the size of a regular key on the keyboard with the Up arrow just to the right of it. All too often I mess up while typing and hit either the up arrow or the backslash key just to its left. I really hope I get used to it eventually.

BTW, It has a 200GB HD and 3 GB of memory. It was either $949 or $999; I can't remember which.

I've been looking closely at Dell's Inspiron line (17"), though I'm awaiting a bit longer to see what Dell's rumored "Studio" line will bring, as it seems to be a mix between Dell's Inspiron and XPS makes.

Yes, and they're a bit better. But I still prefer Vista.
