Windows 7 questions

Hello, I'm looking to upgrade my computers to Windows 7 and I have a few questions

1) Will I be able to upgrade my desktop with XP right to 7, or would I have to upgrade to Vista first? The reason I ask is because I have no Vista install CD's.

2) Will I be able to install the software from the same CD in both my computers?

3) Are there XP and Vista themes that will work in Windows 7?

1) You would need to download Windows 7 Upgrade Adviser to see if your XP can handle Windows 7

2) No, you get one unique Key that only works on one computer.

3) I'm not exactly sure, but probably not.

Oh, well do they make like a family pack or something? I don't want to buy two copies as one is overpriced as it is.

To answer your first question more clearly, I don't believe you can upgrade straight from Windows XP to 7. That being said, even if it were possible, I'd still recommend a clean install, just be sure to back up your data first.

And yes, they do make a family pack of Windows 7. :yes:

You can upgrade to Windows 7 from XP on some PCs if you pass the Upgrade Advisor Al mentioned, but it's highly recommended not to do so, it's just better to do a clean install or buy a new PC w/ Windows 7 installed on instead of upgrading it from XP, my Pc with XP failed the upgrade test so I'll most likely to buy a new PC w/ Win7 preinstalled next year.  :yes:

1. If you do a clean install of 7 (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) it will stick all of your files and programs into a folder in the C drive. If you must upgrade you will need to upgrade to vista then 7.
2. I have been able to actually. Results will vary I guess

What do you mean by "clean install"? Like restoring the desktop then installing 7?

This seems like a difficult, pricey process. I have to purchase a ~$129 copy of Vista only to install a more expensive family pack version of 7 over it minutes later? :wacko:

No. Clean install is erasing your hard disk (after backing up of course) and installing a fresh copy of the operating system. You do not have to have Vista to install Windows 7. It just needs to be compatible with your hardware. (which can be determined via the Upgrade Advisor)

well, you don't have to always go with the clean install...if you don't do a clean install; you'll have a few issues after the installation of Windows 7 (nothing too serious--but don't take my word for it), however the issues will be corrected when the Action Center identifies the issue, if any.
