Dallas/Fort Worth still tops in population growth

I never thought anything like this would happen. I know Dallas/Fort Worth is a major metropolitan area, but I didn't expect this kind of news.

Population growth in the Dallas-Fort Worth region has slowed, but the area still added more people in 2006-07 than any other metropolitan area in the country, according to new U.S. Census Bureau statistics.

The figures, to be released today, show that the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area – the nation's fourth-largest – increased by an estimated 162,250 in population to top 6.1 million residents. That placed it ahead of sprawling metropolises Atlanta and Phoenix in sheer numerical gain.

The metropolitan-level estimates come a week after census officials released data showing that several North Texas counties had grown at a slower pace in 2006-07 than the previous year. Overall, the D-FW area grew at a rate of 2.7 percent.

I know a lot of people who moved to Dallas. Low housing prices, good neighborhoods and endless job oppurtunities are the blame :yes:

Chicago is 3rd, but i thought there were only 3 million people or so in the metro area...

Dallas is the 4th largest metro area now? Didn't Philadelphia use to be the 4th largest?

Gil is correct. After Philly which is 5th is Phoenix then San Diego is the 7th largest

Yea, the QUAD CITIES area (4 cities) only had a growth of 146 (give or take) in the last 7 years :P :lol:

My guess it's mostly retired people, like those who retire and move to Florida. Plus, in Phoenix it's a dry heat, which makes it much more tolerable.

A lot of people move to Pheonix, because it's never really humid down there.  So, 100 degrees really feals like 85 or 90 (not that 85 or 90 is any better :P )

I dunno what people are complaining about, I LOVE humidity, and heat to go along with it. Maybe thats why I love summer so much, it gets really humid here.

I posted my response on the same thread at TWC Classics, so I'll add it here.

No offense, Michael... what I don't understand is how the Dallas-Fort Worth area is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the country. I don't believe that. New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and Phoenix are the top five most populous cities in the United States. Dallas should rank 11th or 12th on the list, but maybe it has moved into the top ten based on the latest census.

Cable News Network (CNN) published an article as well in breaking down the top ten metropolitan area gains.
This was what was originally released yesterday...

UPDATE:
But according to today's Fort Worth Star-Telegram, there are discrepancies in the numbers.
So the official Census data is not official yet and the re-release has been postponed.

I see the reasoning behind the jump in population growth in your area based on economic issues.
For example, the property taxes in the New York City metropolitan area are absolutely astronomical.
Simply through the roof. It's amazing I'm still able to live here.

I don't mind heat. But when you add humidity, its just downright oppressive.
