Title: Computer and Hardware Chat
Post by: Austin M. on July 28, 2011, 09:02:28 AM
Here is the place to talk about computers and hardware!

What sparked this thread is that I went to the Army Aviation Museum in Fort Rucker yesterday and captured pictures of an SGI Power Series computer that runs the Flight Simulators! I will upload them soon.

Old Computing

My father bought his first computer the day before I was born in 1982, and he got me using computers at a very early age.  I taught myself how to touch type before I was even in kindergarten.  I'll attach a photo of me at the computer... too busy to even pose for the camera.  :)

I've definitely become a fan of open-source/free OS.  I started using Ubuntu about a year and a half ago, and, while it's not perfect, it's certainly the best free OS that I've seen.  Very user-friendly (which contradicts my previous opinions about Linux), and, most importantly, it allows contributions from its users.  Windows, on the other hand, does more, has much more money for R&D, and has the biggest names in programming behind it, so the results are going to be better (usually).  However, I think closed-source software in general can consider its days to be numbered.

I'm not even going to rate the Mac.  I just don't like it.  Never have, and I doubt I ever will.  Considering that Apple is the EPITOME of closed-source, I hope it goes first when the open-source revolution takes place!  :)

I have owned computer since late 2000. But I used computers in the 90s when I was at OSU. the first time I was at a computer was in 1994 with a former friend of mine. I wasnt into computer science much, I guess because I didnt understand it and I was majoring in Atmospheric Science and I thought it didnt have to do much with Geography. Of course I know better. I am taking an Intro to Computers course now for my Business Management online program. I just got an E-machines pentium 3.5 GHz system with a 1TB HD and 3 GB RAM. I hope to upgrade it to 6GB since I have Windows 7 Premium.

I'm amazed at how much computers have advanced just in my lifetime, especially considering I started using computers that had only a black-and-white display and used cassette tapes to store programs and files.  :)

Interesting conversation! I remember when I began using a computer, an old AST Laptop with Windows 3.1 Monochrome display and no sound. Floppy drives. I was three or four... I thought it was the best thing ever, then I got older.

I've spanned across Windows ME (crappy), Windows XP (crappier), Windows Vista (crappiest), and Windows 7 (better). I'm currently using an Acer Aspire with Windows 7 on a 250gb HDD, 2gb RAM, and an AMD processor. I find AMD to be a better processor, I've noticed my computer crashes a lot less than when I used Intel. I am planning on upgrading my RAM to 4 or 8gb, the highest level the computer will accept.

I used Ubuntu for several months along Windows and it messed up my BIOS somehow. I had to have almost all hardware replaced as promised under warranty. Speaking of Linux, I'm running CentOS 5 on VMWare with GEMPAK. I don't like GUI Linux or Command-lined Linux... just have my reasons.

Mac OSX. I can't wait to buy my first MacBook. By the time I get my first job, sell my iPod, and save my B-Day and Christmas money, I should have enough... maybe... maybe I'll have to get the Mini instead.

By the time I "graduated" to Windows 3.1, I already had a color monitor.  :)  Sadly, I think you missed out on quite a lot by having Windows 3.1 only in monochrome.  It was quite a good operating system for the time.  In fact, it was the first graphical OS that I'd ever used, excluding some valiant attempts on the Sinclair QL.

I finally threw out my last remaining 5¼" floppies about ten years ago, no longer having access to a computer that still used them (excluding my father's venerable QL, but that was a different operating system).  I still keep some files on 3½" floppies, though.  I have far more than I'll ever need, though.  On the other hand, I heard that 3½" disks are no longer being made, so maybe it's a good thing I have so many (about three dozen)... unless they disintegrate from old age before I'd ever need them!

I have two laptops: one for Windows 7 and one for Ubuntu.  However, my father has both on one computer, and he hasn't had any problems with having both on the same machine.  He switches back and forth between the two very easily.  What kinds of problems did you have that messed up your BIOS, and especially your hardware?!  I've never heard of such a thing before!  My first experiences with Linux were command line, and I just kept thinking that this is like DOS, only a gazillion times more complicated, and so needlessly so.  I actually didn't mind using DOS back in the day, as I thought (even at my young age) that it was rather logical and easy to use.  Of course, since Windows came along, I've never looked back (not like I had a choice!), but I still use the command line prompt in Windows for a couple of things.  Anyway, my second experience with Linux, and the first in graphical form, was Knoppix, which I hated.  Actually, I dislike KDE in general.  It's so "bulky" and awkward-looking in terms of its visual appearance.  My third experience with Linux was Ubuntu, which I like very, very much.  The latest version of Ubuntu (11.04) offers both Gnome and Unity operating environments.  This was a very argued-about move that Ubuntu made, but at least this version offers access to both environments, and I switch between the two based on what I'm doing.  It's an easy change that just requires a reboot - and Ubuntu reboots a lot faster than Windows.

lrun_mdv1_boot
That's how to load the main program on a microdrive on the QL.  Am I the only one here "fortunate" enough to have used microdrives?  Granted, they were a step up from cassette tapes, and quite a step - much faster, they held more, and they loaded and saved on the first attempt.  On the other hand, they were so incredibly fragile.  P.S.: "lrun" stands for "load" and "run" in the same command.

I didn't like that I viewed 3.1 in monochrome only, either! I enjoyed using 3.1, but that laptop is long since being gone. It had an unknown problem and didn't even boot.

The BIOS issue.
Since I had Ubuntu installed under Windows, it was put into the BIOS to be a boot option. When I used Ubuntu about 10 times in a row then required to switch back to Windows, Windows wouldn't boot! When I attempted safe mode, no go. Back to try Ubuntu. It wouldn't work because Windows wasn't booting. It was a chain reaction, boot manager checked the system and said I had a BIOS, Memory, and Hard Drive error. That was just great. Glad I had everything backed up on the SeaGate.

The computer runs great after having all of that replaced and hasn't had an error yet (been about 6mo). The bodyframe is still loose because it was literally ripped apart by Acer... I still don't understand why they didn't ship a new computer, it would have been cheaper.

What does ".rar" mean?  What program is needed to open it?
Title: Re: Computer and Hardware Chat
Post by: Austin M. on September 14, 2011, 09:11:06 PM
Usually a program like Winrar will open the file. Winrar is a trial and brings up a nag screen after 40 days of use, but still works.

A .rar file is short for Roshal ARchive. It is an archive file, or a packaged file (or various files). Similar to a .zip file.

Can a computer have too much "ram"?  Like, too much oil is bad for a car.

It sure can. Maybe it might just be some computers, but my computer has an 8gb limit on RAM.

It depends on whether it's measuring with the base-10 or base-2 system. With the base-2 system (which Windows uses), 1,024 would be correct, but with the base-10 one, one TB would be 1,000 GB.

:offtopic: I remember the first hard drive we got for our computer.  It seemed like a miracle at the time, though the capacity by today's standards would be ridiculously low.  Heck, I remember when I replaced my 5¼" floppy disks with 3½" not-quite-so-floppy disks and thinking that was impressive!  :)

My only box (http://wlair.us.to/my-computers.php#volunteer) has only 512 MB of RAM, a 1.15 GHz single-core 32-bit processor, and 2 hard disks (roughly 50 GB total), and it runs the 32-bit (i686) version of Arch Linux. I use mainly text-mode/console applications, usually in a terminal emulator in X. I use only a few graphical applications now (e.g., Firefox, The GIMP). I also do not use a desktop environment any more — I use xmonad, a tiling window manager.

Firefox is too large, though. It uses too much RAM, swapping often, and it takes as long as 10 seconds to load. I am considering switching to a smaller Web browser such as uzbl. I already sometimes use ELinks, a text browser, when I do not need something as large as Firefox.

It's best if you match the speed to the computer's default, with the higher space (eg 512 MB DDR PC2700 upgraded to 1 GB DDR PC2700).

It would help us to know what the make & model of your PC is.. if it's not a PC2700 computer and you put the RAM in chances are likely the PC won't even be able to boot since you used the incorrect type of RAM. IMO, it's better to never replace your RAM unless you know what you're doing or if you consult someone (especially someone you know really well) who knows what they're doing.

DDR3 is the latter version/revision of ram sticks. It's newer, uses less power, and performs much better than DDR2. You can only use what your system currently uses and cannot mix and match the types. So, say if your current computer uses DDR3 at 1333Mhz, you can only add DDR3 at 1333Mhz. You also need to get sticks with the same Mhz speed or your system will use the lower speed ram set for all sticks.

My computer lately has been giving me a tough time. When I'm using even basic graphical applications such as powerpoint, my computer constantly locks up and any time I attempt to view shockwave/flash based content it's very "skippy" if you know what I mean. Here are my system specs at the bottom and I'm wondering if anyone may know the problem with my system.

Brand: Dell
Model: Precision T1500
Processor: Intel Core i3 540 (Clarkdale) 3.07Ghz
Graphics: AMD FirePro 3D V4800 (1GB)
RAM: 6GB 1333Mhz
HDD: 250GB 7200RPM
PSU: 350W

I've never had this problem before and I keep all my drivers up to date. I usually can solve these problems, but this one I've had no luck. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

Donovan, it sounds like your graphics card is struggling or not having adequate memory to do the job.  Hopefully, some other members chime in here with other thoughts.

I'm pretty good at keeping my computers running smooth so I'll help you out. The problem might not be your graphics card so I'll have you do a variety of things. Try some of the following things:

• Run a Disk Cleanup - It will remove some of the unimportant files from your computer
• Run Disk Defragmenter - It will simply consolidate files on your computer to keep your HDD running smooth, may take a while
• Remove Tracking Cookies - Removing these won't make a huge impact but it's nice to have a clean running computer
• Lower Graphics Settings - Right click on your desktop and click on your graphics card's settings. Try lowering the settings a bit

Hopefully those things help. It's the main reason why my computer is running like brand new. If it doesn't work, it could be simply too much data on your HDD, the less free space, typically the slower the computer. I personally don't think the problems your having have to do with your graphics card. 1GB of video memory is very decent.

Couple things Donovan..

Have your task manager open and make sure that none of your service processes (such as svchost.exe) exceed 100,000 MB in memory and or ~50%+ in CPU and find out what the culprit is. Make sure their priority is set to normal as well.

My CPU usage rarely exceeds 40-50% Even on the most complex tasks. This processor however has an internal graphics card. I'm wondering if it's using that instead of my dedicated or if it's switching between the two at times. Is there a way to detect this?

You need to go into your device manager then and disable the integrated graphics.. in fact Im surprised your computer is running with both graphical devices enabled

I went into the Device Settings and only found the dedicated graphics card detected. So, that rules out what I assumed was the problem.

A Bios setup would never allow 2 graphics cards running at once unless the two are compatible with each other, it's something like ATI Crossfire. An Integrated graphics card would only work if there is no graphics card at all otherwise it would result in a lot of system crashes.. It's simply a backup.

Donovan, have you tried any of my suggestions?

Hi GTAIVman. Yes, I'm very savy with computers as well, so I've done what you've suggested and do that regularly. Thanks for the tips though. When I posted that it may be switching between integrated and dedicated, I wasn't thinking clearly. I use the output of my dedicated graphics card, but for some reason it didn't occur to me that it would have to be working for that to happen. I'm wondering if the card is just beginning to fail.

That could be, though I've never really heard of graphics card "failing". Have you over-used your card recently? How long have you have your computer?

EDIT: Nevermind: I have heard of graphics cards failing. That usually happens when the graphics card begins to overheat from excessive use.

My card is always used by my system. I got this system in November 2010.

Yes, it could be your card is overused and may be overheating a bit. Although I still doubt a graphics card problem in this situation.

Well something that I also notice is that when I play certain games, it runs very smooth with 60+ Frame rates, but when I play on lower settings it gets lower frame rates. My HDD has 60% of it empty.

That's strange, usually lower settings mean a faster FPS. :dunno:

Yeah, it is strange. I'm not sure why that is. I thought maybe that bit of info could show something, but at this point I'm not sure what to think.

If you could benchmark those games and see the difference between the FPS on low settings and high settings, that would help.

I'll Just tell you.

I had ~30FPS on Low Settings and 60 On high. I may have had the FPS lock on, but I usually don't.

Well, judging from that, your graphics card doesn't seem to be having any problems. Microsoft Powerpoint can sometimes be jittery on any computer. Are sure this is a noticeable difference on your computer from before?

First, have you called tech support from the provider of your computer?  Also, is your computer under warranty?  It would be a lot easier to make a change if you're covered.

No, I have not. It is under warranty for 3 more years and I'm pretty sure they won't do anything about it.

You're kidding.  When my hard drive failed on an older Dell laptop years ago, they replaced it for me at no charge and helped me through the installation process over the phone.  You ought to at least try to use your warranty if you have it.

Hmm.... They did fix my laptop keyboard twice with no questions asked and replaced my monitor... Did they ever give you the option to upgrade your harddrive when they did the service?

No, they gave me a standard hard drive at that time although it did have more space than the one that failed.  You would have to make a purchase for an upgrade.  I know Craig and others tried to help you, but since you're still having issues, I'd at least ask technical support to see if they can think of something that we didn't.

Yeah. Hopefully they'll also be able to pinpoint whether it's a HDD or GPU/CPU problem... Thanks Patrick.  :)

They don't take advertising money or bribes, this is correct. I do not believe they give unbiased reports, however. I do not have evidence to back up my claim though.

The shield means nothing. That's just for UAC permissions. So if you cannot delete it, just go to your Control Panel and disable UAC (User Account Control).

If there's any great tech person on the forums that could help me, then it would be greatly appreciated...

So over the Christmas break, I bought a new ASUS 15.6" touch-screen laptop with 8GB memory and 750GB hard drive.  If you read the "Slow and lagging" thread in the Site News,  you may have noticed that I complained about a typing lag.  Well, this is a problem that really annoys me and greatly upsets me on a computer with this much memory.  (My old HP computer with only 4 GB of memory did not have this problem.)  The lag seems to happen on programs such as Word, or when I'm typing e-mails on Outlook.  It will happen every 30 seconds to one-minute.  Strangely enough, the typing problems I had on the forums was a first-time, and at this point, one-time occurrence.

Anyway, Zach, taking heed to your advice, I opened the task manager and see that I have 81 background processes running.  Is that a lot?  I don't even know what half of them are but don't want to turn some off in case they are subtle programs that I need.

Bottom line is: If someone could help me either figure out what background programs I can turn off, or figure out another way to stop this horrible typing lag, then I would greatly appreciate it.

That's a lot of processes, Andy.  I only have 49 running on mine, including having a web browser open to reply to you.  I would start looking at what exactly the processes are and consider disabling some unnecessary programs and services.  You may want to do some updates on any of the programs and drivers that you do want to keep to see if it helps.  Look online for ways to speed up Windows 7, too.  I'm sure more members can give you better details, but I'll let this advice be a starting point for you.

I have 102 processes on mine and no issues either. What CPU and GPU does your lappy have? I'd imagine those touch screen laptops aren't as powerful as traditional notebooks.

Mike,

If I can answer your questions without looking stupid, my CPU says it's Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3632QM CPU @ 2.20 GHz.

And I know I have Intel(R) Graphics.

Again, thanks for your help guys.

Do you have any third party anti-virus/firewall software installed?

I've got Kaspersky Anti-Virus installed.  I also have Malwarebytes Anti-malware, and SUPER Anti-Spyware installed.  My parents talked to GeekSquad (I think) and they recommended the malwarebytes and super anti-spyware for maximum security.  (If you think they could be causing the problem, however, I could try removing them.)

Is there much of a difference between a cheap DVD burner over an expensive one?  Quality wise?

You pay for what you get, really. That's how it has gone for me, at least. I bought a HP dvd1270 and it works perfectly well for me. Very fast, burns discs properly, etc. Usually Toshiba drives have failed on me, but I've always had great luck with Lite-On and HP. Oh, and another warning from personal experience... if you go used, do not get a Matshita/Panasonic. They have all failed on me so far.

As for the quality aspect, I am fairly sure most of them will have a plastic face plate. I don't see any other substitute. The metals aren't the strongest, but if you don't drop the drive or put a ton of pressure on the thing, it should be fine. My main concern would be about the optical lens and the gears. That varies model from model, so just do some research before you buy to see what people have to say about the quality.

I have an AMD Radeon HD7450.  I've downloaded the latest package for this and it's installed on my PC, but none of the drivers have been updated.  There still in 32 bit and not 64.  Do I need to uninstall the old ones first and then re-install?

What I would do is use AMD's autodetector here to see if you have the proper drivers installed http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/auto_detect.aspx (http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/auto_detect.aspx)

I've been having some big problems with Chrome the past couple of days. Every time I load certain YouTube videos, I see the loading circle snake. The video doesn't play, and about 10 seconds later, my computer freezes and I'm forced to manually reboot it (can't Ctrl+Alt+Del or anything else after freezing).

I've tried everything (disabled certain plugins, disabled Chrome's hardware acceleration, tried getting help from online, etc.) but I still keep getting computer freezes. Anybody have any idea on what I should next?

Please note that I don't wish to use to Firefox or IE because those browsers are way slower than Chrome IMO.

My system is a Windows 7 64-bit PC, if that helps. The version of Chrome that I'm having trouble with is the recent version (June or July 2013).

Did you try deleting the cache? My Chrome sometimes locks up on certain webpages, but after I delete the cache, it doesn't do it anymore.

I tried clearing my Chrome's cache, but my computer still freezes up after I tried viewing a particular YT video afterward  :(

I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome, but that didn't work either.

This year just continues to go horribly for me.  My Windows 7 laptop crashed last night, and I lost everything.  All I did was close my lid for 20 minutes, but when I reopened it, everything was black.  My CPU light was off despite me moving my mouse and keyboard to wake the system up, which meant I could only pull the plug to reboot.  However, every effort I tried to repair my Windows failed, and I was forced to start all over from scratch.  Not even System Restore worked as it was wiped clean.  It has taken me 12 straight hours to get most of the basics finished.  How did my Windows get corrupted so badly?  I worry that I may need a new laptop someday as well. :(

I'm sorry.  That's never a fun thing to have to go through.  It last happened to me three years ago, and I still shudder thinking about it.  Fortunately, I keep comprehensive backups, though some files that get updated very frequently (such as my financial software database) aren't backed up as often as they should be.

I'm so sorry to hear that you lost all of your computer stuff, Pat  :(  I've been down that road before.

I once had an old Windows XP laptop that a friend of mine gave to me, which suddenly slowed down at some point and eventually crashed in early 2010. I also had an XP PC which also crashed three months after the laptop did. Soon after, I bought a new PC and a new laptop (both of which are run on Windows 7). I also bought an external hard drive, so that way I can backup my stuff in case if any of my computers look like they're dying.

Not a pretty sight to see when computers take their last breaths and then crash

Sorry for double-posting, but I'm still having problems playing certain videos on YT using Chrome. A certain video will show the first video frame and the loading circle, and then after about 10 seconds my computer will freeze up completely, requiring a hard reboot. I tried everything I've researched and I'm still getting the same error

No problems at all with Firefox, so I'll just use that browser to play YT vids for now because I fear that my computer will freeze again if I played the videos on Chrome  :fear:  Hopefully this YT issue with Chrome will get resolved soon.

All my laptop issues have finally been resolved now! B)

Jim, I'm not sure why YT is acting up on you for Chrome.  Have you tried using an older version of Chrome?  Then, you would know if an updated version caused a bug that Google must fix.

As of yesterday I started using Chromium (an open source web browser similar to Chrome) and I found out that PepperFlash was to blame for the weird YT video loading on Chrome and subsequent computer freezes. Chromium does not have PepperFlash, so I started using the new browser and I was able to play the videos that weren't loading correctly on Chrome, and they all work great!

So it's goodbye Chrome and hello Chromium, as the latter will now be my new default web browser

I have Windows 8.1.  When I'm ready to close the IE app, I go back to the desktop and go to the upper left corner to close the app, but it doesn't close.  According to task manager it's still running and when I click the IE app it takes me back to the last page I was on.  Anyone else getting this?

I had another computer freeze problem with Chromium OS last night, but I did some research and I read that someone said that others who have had this issue seemed to have solved the problem by uninstalling their RealTek audio driver and then re-installing it with the latest version. So I tried that, and then I tested out the main reason for my computer's latest freeze, a Halloween flash video of the Google logo. No more freezes!   Now I'm hoping that the updated audio driver will work for some of the YouTube videos that I had trouble loading in the past on Chrome/Chromium that also subsequently froze my computer. Fingers are crossed...
