I was in the 6th grade when this happened and all schools on my side of town were on lockdown the entire day. The classrooms had to stay locked and the only time we could come out was to take our sack lunches back to class and eat there. It was very confusing not knowing what was going on. He's known here as the Courtroom Serial Killer. He almost killed two other people, a female courtroom officer that he had beaten so hard in the head that he fractured her skull left her with permant brain damage and a newspaper journalist who he also fought with when carjacking him, he had to go to the hospital because of a broken arm and some minor cuts and bruises.

Yes, that's him, he should have gotten the Death Penalty, but the state law says that all jurors have to come to the same agreement and since 3 of the 12 jurors wanted him to get life after being sworn in 4 days straight to change their minds, he got 485 year life sentence instead.

I could probably live for 485 years if I tried hard enough.

Later on that year I believe my grandmother told me that the lady he was holding hostage while he was on the run gave her story of what happened between her and him on Oprah, I didn't see it though. The following are just some videos I found about his case.
