Title: Apple: Desktop or Laptop?
Post by: Gil on February 27, 2008, 11:27:09 AM
Trying to get an idea of what would be a smarter buy. I've posted this in several forums, so i'm quoting it.

Quote
My parents and I have discussed that when i go into High School next year, I would be able to get a new Mac at the end of this school year (provided i have good grades and such). At first, I was thinking about a MacBook Pro, since it's pretty "bitchin" and very powerful. However, after giving it some more thought, I'm not sure it makes sense. 1, I already have an iBook, so computing on the go is not much of an issue. 2, I don't do anything really all that powerful, except for Reason 4 (music creation) and Photoshop/ Dreamweaver stuff. and finally, they are considerably more expensive, seeing as i would get the 17 inch screen.

My other option, would be an iMac. I've never only used an iMac about twice in my life, and it was the original Bondi. Seeing as portability is not essential, a desktop would give me more power. Or would it (I'm asking)? I feel that if I had a MBP, it would have a far greater chance of getting wrecked somehow, such as being dropped. Also, iMacs are relatively compact for a desktop.

So, with that said, I would really appreciate any help with making the right decision!

I also realized that PowerPC is being phased out by Apple, so newer apps won't be compatible.

I heard its 2 floors, with an invisible elevator.

I'd buy it at the Apple Store. Where else?

No. I only buy brand new computers directly from the manufacture. No 3rd parties.

If you buy from apple.com, you're buying directly from the manufacturer. ;)

Apple Store would probably be the best since it comes straigth from the manufacterer (Apple)

Apple.com IS the Apple Store. The term "Apple Store" applies to both online and retail stores, seeing as they are both stores of Apple.

Oh, ok. When the term "Apple Store" was mentioned, I thought it was only referring to the actual brick and mortar stores.

No, but it could be. That's probably where I'll get it, if the sales tax isn't too high.

If you don't want to pay shipping and handling then going to the retail store might be the best bet

Apple doesn't charge for shipping anyway.

A Mac Pro would be going way overboard, unless you're planning to do A LOT with it.

True. If i were to go desktop, an iMac would be more suitable. Just having a really hard time deciding which one to go with. They both have their pro's and con's.

They're expensive too and are mainly used for commercial/business purposes

Just get the one that has everything that YOU need. Don't get too much, and don't get too little, either. Get what suits you the best.

That's the problem. They both suit me perfectly. A desktop would be nice, because its not as fragile, not expensive, so theres a less chance of getting damaged or wrecked somehow. the MBP is portable, which is nice, but since I already have an iBook, its not a necessity. The iMac only comes with a glossy finish. The MBP has an option for both glossy and matte.

GRRR the choices!!

Have you considered the MacBook over the MacBook Pro? Or a Mac Mini over an iMac or Mac Pro?
Title: Re: Apple: Desktop or Laptop?
Post by: Gil on February 27, 2008, 08:27:14 PM
No, I won't even consider those choices. This is my one shot to get a a Mac for absolutely nothing, and i want to get the best possible one.

You already have an iBook, so that takes care of the portability issue. I'd say, go for the iMac. It's in the middle-of-the-line (the Mac mini is low-end, and the Mac Pro is high-end), and it should do what you need it to do really well, without any problems. Yes, the MacBook Pro has a matte finish and the iMac doesn't, but that doesn't really matter. You already have a portable Mac, so there isn't any need for one. And for what you need to do, the iMac should work just fine.

Is price an issue on what to get?

I agree completely, Stephen. However Apple is really pushing to phase out the PowerPC computers. I want to be running all of the apps that my next computer will be. I'm already pushing the iBook by running Reason 4 (it doesn't even meet the requirements) and Adobe CS3. In a year or 2, it will be useless. That's what i'm most concerned about.

Apple has already phased out the PowerPC computers (that happened almost a year and a half ago). ;) The iMac today runs on Intel chips.

No, that's not what i mean. They are trying to phase out support for them. Many software companies don't even make applications for PowerPC Macs anymore.

Most apps today are Universal Binaries, meaning they run on both PPC and Intel Macs.

Yes, but in a year or 2 from now, they wont be.

Let me get this straight, as I'm kinda confused. So, you want to run the same applications on your iBook that you want to run on your iMac?
Title: Re: Apple: Desktop or Laptop?
Post by: Gil on February 27, 2008, 08:37:59 PM
Well yes and no. If I had an important file that i created on my iMac (if that's what i choose), I would want to be able to use/edit it on my iBook, if i were to travel or something. Technologically speaking, that won't be possible, seeing as my iBook can't run most newer apps.

Since you want to travel along with your Intel apps and files, then you should go with the MacBook, as it's pretty much the laptop equivalent of the iMac. Or, if you feel like shelling out the extra money, the MacBook Pro. It's up to you.

I don't want to get a MacBook, because it just isn't powerful enough. I would be getting the MBP if i got the notebook. I'm just extremely worried about it getting wrecked or something. Maybe I will have my parents buy the MBP and buy the iMac for myself or something... I don't know.

I cannot make up my mind for the life of me.

K, i think what i'm going to do... I'm going to get the MacBook Pro, but also get a keyboard, mouse, and Cinema display, build a homemade dock, and use it as a desktop, except when i need mobility.
