- One of the top 5 largest earthquakes in the world
- 500 times larger than the Haiti quake
- Tsunami possible for the West Coast of the US but more likely Hawaii
-
I hope Felipe is alright. :(
-
If there is any good news Chile is better prepared for this having experienced a 9.5 (largest ever) in 1960 and 8.5 in 1977.
-
All of my thoughts and prayers go out to any people who have been and will be affected by this.
-
Yeah the last time something like this happened was in 1960 when a 9.5 quake and tsunami killed 5,000+ people in Chile and anoother 60 in Hilo. I hope everyone is alright. I'm particularly concerned for Felipe, he lives in Concepcion which was hardest hit by the quake
-
Tsunami expected to to hit Hilo by 4pm. TWC will be covering it
-
My Aunt lives in Hawaii. She said everyone there is understandably in a panic.
-
Reports are coming in that a 130 foot tsunami has killed dozens of people in an island off Chile
-
Buoy off of Hawaii has now detected a wave http://bit.ly/dAq3tR (http://bit.ly/dAq3tR)
-
I have friends that live on Oahu.
-
From CNN and Telemundo: death toll in Chile has risen to 147...
-
Unfortunately, living along the "Pacific Ring of Fire" puts you at a high risk for earthquakes and tsunamis. We truly live on a planet that changes everyday. I sure hope everyone impacted by today's event will be okay. :(
-
"The Tsunami has reached Hawaii" Things are starting now. 3ft rise now. So far its small. Lets hope it stays that way
-
214 is the death toll now... and it keeps rising...
Also, the tsunami is finally approaching Hawaii as of right now. A couple 3-footers, and a 5-footer has reached the area.

Nobody can spell apparently.

Yes, that LA affiliate (the one I'm also watching) seems to fail so much. <_<
-
Never thought I'd see one of these put for the whole sound...
-
The Tsunami Warning for Hawaii has been canceled. They really dodged a bullet!

So basically, the waves were like 7feet at most?

Hawaii had around 3 ft but Chile saw much higher. Though these waves were small they are quite powerful

Let me break this down for you:
Guys, calm down. I made that post because I wanted to see some local forecasts, not coverage of an earthquake that is clear across the equator.
You do realize we live in a global society? What happens halfway around the world affects everyone else in the world in some way, shape, or form. Local forecasts aren't the most important thing in the world, and I for one enjoyed TWC's coverage, as it was very informative.
but I don't know anyone who has ever been to Chile or plans to, nor do I have any relations whatsoever to anyone in that country.
Me either, however, the earthquake did produce a tsunami that threatened millions of US citizens (entire Pacific coast, Alaska, and Hawaii, where I have family).

.
-
And Aaron, you have digital cable now right? If so, I'm sure your NBC affiliate has set up an NBC Plus weather channel (which I'm sure uses TWC's forecasts).
Weatherplus ceased operations in 2008.

You couldn't have said it better myself. This is the world we live in today. We need to know how to deal and control with these kind of events. A tsunami/earthquake is a very serious event. Many of the world's populations (including myself) live directly on coastline. Tsunamis can be rare but pose a serious threat to these places and yet you could care less?
-
For the last time, if you don't like hearing about this stuff, turn off the TV!!!
And another thing, deleting your posts doesn't help when I can read them in a quote. ;)
-
I will be cleaning up this thread. Remain on topic please as we all know our opinions and feelings on this. No need to continue it

Can I turn this around and give you guys more sad news updates about this horrible earthquake? :hmm: dang.
Death toll in Chile has risen up to 708. President Michelle Bachelet and President-Elect Sebastian Pineda both spoke out of this earthquake last night. In Bachelet's words, Chile is in a "state of catastrophe".

You can hear her official speech last night here
'Let's be strong, Chile' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvo1fZUN1B8#noexternalembed-ws)
Strong words

Yea almost impossible and useless for a warning so close. Just horrible

You know what amazes me most about this earthquake? It was so strong that it actually changed the rotation speed of the planet, making our day shorter by 1.26 milliseconds! :o

Yeah, I am very shocked about that fact. I want it back! :P

You'll get that time back eventually. The Earth's rotation has been slowing down on average over the years due to friction from the tidal forces between our planet and the Moon, but that earthquake gave us a temporary little jolt forward. After all, it's estimated that the energy of that earthquake was the equivalent of 15.8 billion tons of TNT going off at once!

It's microseconds. ;) It reduced our day by 0.000000126 seconds, if I remember the amount of 0s correctly.

A lot of powerful aftershocks still around 6.0
-
Death toll now is 800 +. Expect that number to rise up to thousands.
Locally, LA rescue workers are waiting for the call to fly over to Chile to help with recovery efforts.

Quite remarkable how Chile has been able to more or less remain independent and have been able to handle the situation using their own resources for so long.
LA rescue workers have been called off
