The Weather Channel Windows 8 Metro/Modern UI App...
« on: December 03, 2012, 05:45:02 AM »
I highly dislike the present Windows 8 app that TWC presently has out.... It's horrifically ugly, it's bland, and it's "generic." The weather icons they use aren't even their web or on air ones, they are highly generic and ugly. I took the liberty of taking some screenshots and present the links below......

The first shot is what you see when you search the app in the Windows Store:

The second shot is what you see in the current conditions page:

Scrolled to the end of the current conditions page:

This shot is the day-by-day forecast page:
https://twctodayforums.com/twcwindows/twc4.jpg

This shot is the hour-by-hour forecast page:

This shot is the radar map page (note you cannot change to a satellite like image, you're stuck with the ugly map):

The only "saving grace" part of this app, the alerts page:

If you want my personal opinion, I would "pan" away from this app and use a different weather app instead, until TWC can get their act together.

Wow, that is dull! I take it you have Windows 8? What do you think of it? It looks like a radical (and unwelcome) departure from the look most Windows users are used to. I've also heard it's difficult to use.

That looks horrible!  The icons also make me sick.  Amazing how TWC seems to have these bright, animated apps for Apple products and then turn around and provide this piece of crap for Windows.  Perhaps it's Windows' fault for not wanting the nicer apps that TWC can provide?

Though I don't have Windows 8 (I might be getting it if I buy a new computer), some of the screenshots I've seen of it just make it look a whole bunch "simpler" and more dull, as in the way things are laid out or written, etc.  Is this the direction being taken with technology these days?

As for the new application for Windows 8, TWC should do better than that. I think they took the minimalist approach of Windows 8 and went way overboard.

As for your concerns with Windows 8, here is my short review.
Windows 8 has been absolutely fantastic in my uses. I thought for a while that I would miss the old start menu, but I do not. I installed an application (Start 8) a while back to get the Win7-like start menu back and uninstalled it within 15 minutes. One thing I do not use often are the applications from the Windows store. On a desktop without touch input, they're useless to me. Even though some of the changes are somewhat radical, it's not hard at all to use Windows 8 with a mouse and keyboard. In my uses, it may actually be much quicker to find what I need. The performance boosts are also worth it. It's fairly noticeable on my 3yo computer now. Best suggestion is to go test drive it for yourself, but I'd advise giving it a few hours before you make a decision on the OS. The learning curve is steep, but you'll be on your way within about 3-4 hours. Seriously, it's not hard at all if you're not lazy. I can honestly say, after using Win8, I dread using a computer with Win7.  Lets not forget, Microsoft is rumored to be making updates to this OS in mid-2013 to improve the UI and interface features. Perhaps they will learn from the radical changes in Win8 and make it a bit more user friendly from the first use. Hope this helps.

Once you learn where everything is, it's very simple to use, like it was for Windows 7. I've taken the time to actually explore around the entire operating system, both the metro/modern ui and the classic desktop ui. I know where everything is, and it's as smooth as butter. I like Windows 8. I have 0 complaints at this point. I always recommend a clean installation over an upgrade so that there would be 0 issues. I'm available for questions if anyone would like to upgrade to Windows 8 and would like help with installation or other questions.
