Title: The Weather Channel's parent company to be renamed...
Post by: Lightning on October 21, 2012, 10:48:36 PM
I just found this link on twitter, which was retweeted by severe studios. Look at this article: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2012/10/22/business/media/weather-channels-parent-company-is-renamed.xml (http://mobile.nytimes.com/2012/10/22/business/media/weather-channels-parent-company-is-renamed.xml)

Seems logical. I was pleased to see this in particular

His comments foreshadowed a shift for the flagship television channel, as well. The previous chief executive of the company, Michael J. Kelly, oversaw the addition of taped reality shows and documentaries, some of which were only tangentially connected to weather. The changes sometimes lifted the channel's ratings, but alienated fans who wanted live weather news.

Mr. Kenny seems to be pulling back a bit: taped shows in the future will have weather as a "main character," he said, not just a background character. A documentary series about ironworkers in New York is not being renewed, for instance. Some new programs will emphasize stories from Internet users who submit weather videos and photos.

"The TV division has really doubled down on weather enthusiasts as their core audience," Mr. Kenny said.

"We're not trying to serve everybody," he added. "We're trying to serve our core audience really well."

So they're dumping non-weather programs? Wow! That would be pretty much every show would have to go! :o

Hopefully these changes will bring about some positive results, especially dropping shows about people who simply happen to work outside in various weather conditions.

Well, this could be a step in the right direction! Glad to see Iron Men isn't being renewed on TWC, but I did like the show so maybe Discovery will pick it up.

So does this mean long form programming will be totally removed?

Nope but it will hopefully be more weather oriented

My take is there won't be less shows, since they have turned more OCMs loose (you really need more than they have now if you increase the live programming hours). But, the upcoming lineup will consist of shows where weather is front and center.

i know this has been bounced around a couple times but wouldn't it make sense (if they're changing the programming) to just use instrumental music even if it's not smooth jazz instead of vocals?

That thought doesn't mean anything.  The music section is an afterthought in the grand scheme of things when renaming a parent company.  There's going to be way more attention focused on the actual programming lineup and the talent on air.

Why does this keep coming up?  As Patrick said, vocal music doesn't really relate to the programming.  Furthermore, we've mentioned countless times how viewers appreciate the change in music.  I don't think vocal music is going anywhere anytime soon. ;)

I don't know about you, but this new name makes it sounds like they're controlling the weather. :P

Not that it really matters, but which reality shows are being cancelled? We all know that Iron Men is one of them, but is there is a list of shows that are also going as well?  :dunno:

It was cancelled a few months ago, AFAIK (correct me if I'm wrong).

Meh. The name change is minor. As for this Kenny person, it's a step in the right direction but considering where they're starting from they need to be running, not creeping.
