Redesigned website coming soon!
« on: June 29, 2010, 04:26:38 PM »
I was checking the weekend forecast for where my mom lives and came across an interesting blog post.

http://www.weather.com/blog/weather/8_22209.html

Apparently, weather.com has been completely redesigned and will launch in the coming weeks. The post states that the last redesign was nearly 10 years ago. Wow, I had no idea it had been THAT long! Where I work, we generally recommend redesigning a site every few years.

Anyway, the redesign is suppose to fix issues that people having been complaining about for some time. Among them are poor navigation, a cluttered look, and difficulty finding things. All of which I've experienced, and I'm sure many of you have as well. Should be interesting.

I wonder if the re-design will look similar to the new Local Forecast pages. Those were "re-launched" just a few months ago.

But, nevertheless, I think weather.com needs a new design and hope that it is worth the wait.

Their blog post sums it up perfectly
Quote
-- The site is cluttered
-- I can't find what I'm looking for
-- The site is too slow
-- The site is too hard to navigate
This update has been long overdue, especially since Accuweather and other competitors have worked to make very Web2.0 friendly sites

I wonder what TWC considers a complete "redesign," then. They actually seem to have changed the look/layout of their website a few times in the past ten years. Just look at this screenshot from 2006 and compare it what the site looks like now. This is a big difference, but I guess it's not considered a re-design. (Which could mean that this will be a MAJOR facelift. :thrilled:)

Can somebody find out whether or not they are going to keep Gold or if it will change or not? I rely on this a lot for my school's morning show.

TWC I am sure will want to keep making as much money off their products as possible. I am sure you will still have Gold. If I may ask why do you have Weather.com Gold? I didn't think it offered anything that special. I use ad filters to prevent websites from loading ads anyway so that doesn't seem very worth it for that.

It's more customizable and we can have everything (cities, forecast products, maps, etc) shown in the order we want them, making it easier for our weather reports at school. It isn't the ads that bother me.

I am sure it has more to do with navigation.  It is so hard to find what you want on the website.  As you can tell by both of the designs you posted, everything is cluttered, and has the same general layout.

Yes, this appears to be a full-blown redesign. Not just a minor facelift.

I see they still haven't updated the look of the 10 day forecast, or weekend forecast pages. That's disappointing, as I don't think they match the rest of the look.

If I recall, it's a work in progress

Very nice! Still too many ads, and I couldn't find any special maps, but much better than it is now!
