yes i saw it last night
-
I like it. It's less disturbing than the old "|HD|" pillars.
-
I noticed them on the TWC movie night. Surprised the movie wasn't 16:9

I guess they didn't release an enhanced version. Ive seen plenty of movies from before them released in widescreen. Guess not for this one

I have DirecTV and when I woke up the HD stuff was the same as it had been for the past few months but then I was watching at about 7 this evening and they had updated the forecasts.
BTW, I'm up @ 2:20 AM because I couldn't sleep, I have to get ready for school in three and a half hours too  Also it's not even midnight yet in California

OT but you now have DirecTV  I would never switch to satellite if I had a legacy STAR in my town

It's not always about the STAR. It's about coast and value.

*cost :P
Yeah I agree. Usually the cable companies with the legacy stars offer the cheapest package in the area but in these days saving money is essential, so making moves such as switching to satellite is wise.

I could have also stated that over at TWCC about a month ago he discovered on his cable lineup an XL.

I like them, but they should make the text L3rd-safe.

That would have probably necessitated showing a separate pan-and-scan feed for the SD broadcast, which would technically qualify as showing two entirely different versions of the movie for the HD and SD feeds. As far as I know, there's no way to pan and scan a movie "on the fly" from one feed. Or, the SD version could have been broadcast in letterbox.
My guess is they simply showed the movie pillarboxed on HD because there are far fewer HD viewers than SD, and this was the easiest way out.
I am surprised, though, that the HD feed didn't put weather information off to the side instead of pillarboxes.
Not to mention that I'm entirely against TWC showing feature films like this in the first place. Weather documentaries - that's one thing, but not actual movies... Am I the only one who misses the fantastic docuementaries TWC produced in the late 1980s and early 1990s? They just don't come close these days, in my opinion. I remember Marshall Seese's documentary about Hurricane Hugo that was absolutely fantastic!

finally a full view of them
EDIT: these seem to be different than the last ones I posted

Looks like they saw my complaint and made them L3rd-safe. :P

Sorry it's a little dark, I can't resize it.

Tweaked it a bit.

Sorry for bumping, but I guess the old |HD| pillarboxes aren't retired.

Is it possible those are "burned" on to the program - as in the control room's not cueing them up, but they are literally on the tape?
Kind of like if you catch one of the weekend documentaries on MSNBC and you see their old logo because they just "burned" it on there.

Excellent point.

Or on the 2003-2005 Storm Stories episodes (when the LDL/current logo isn't present).
-
They must have found some way to override that old logo... I haven't seen it since early last March. But then again, when you show the same episode 3 times in one night... it could take you months to go through the entire series.

It was only shown at the end during the credit scroll, and TWC probably doesn't like to show that logo anymore, which is likely why they "squish" the credits these days. <_<

Well this is odd. For some reason, they're not broadcasting Weather Center in 16:9, so they're adding pillarboxes to the screen. Thing is, is the "blurred background" really an idea for a new pillarbox of sorts?

A lot of HD stations do that when the source is in SD.

Yea. Was the entire show like that? Perhaps they are still adjusting things in getting rid of the sidebar

The segment about that pier was recorded in SD. There may have been other segments of that report that were recorded in HD, so for the SD portions, the editors used those special pillarboxes instead of just leaving them black.
