Title: New Graphics and Icons
Post by: TWCToday on February 26, 2010, 06:00:38 PM
I have been able to confirm that YWT and various other shows will be debuting new graphics very soon.

No clue on that one. Base maps have changed on the BBOD graphics already so thats one change to expect

About time! Among my hopes are 1) the solid background behind city names will be gone and 2) we do not have more dumbing down of the graphics with fewer and fewer details (Remember when the national temp map would actually show temps for more than 10 places at a time?)

Sorry, but unfortunately this is a growing trend in the industry. The less info there is, the less confusion there is for the viewer.

Sorry, but unfortunately this is a growing trend in the industry. The less info there is, the less confusion there is for the viewer.

Perhaps at the national level this is true, but it seems like the opposite locally. Local stations want to appear that they're actually "microcasting" for your hometown and/or neighborhood, making maps appear more cluttered or making it seem like the weather segment lasts a few maps too long. WGN's Tom Skilling (truly the weather master) actually switched to regional temperature maps that are too detailed with their HD update. I think the lack of detail is one factor that makes watching the local forecast videos (if your city is actually big enough for a true segment) on either weather.com or on Accuweather less satisfying than a local newscast; it's just too vague. The Weather Channel could show more cities if they went back to the way they did the regional maps in the 90s by not showing a forecast icon after every temperature and instead placing icons in key spots to indicate weather conditions.

As for making things simpler, I think the big cold snap was actually an example of how the national maps are too dumbed down. There were not enough cities showing on the map to effectively illustrate the breadth of the cold air, and instead of one good map showing a spread of midwest temps, the OCMs have to click through multiple frames (here's Chicago <click and frame transition> here's Minneapolis. I think another example is during severe weather, where the OCMs geographical knowledge is so poor and no city name is close by that they just speak in generalities or point over there (even the geographically magnificent Bill Kenelly has fallen off, not to mention folks like Warren Madden [major city/Hurricane Hunter name dropper] or Stephanie [okay, unfair]).

While it is always a good idea to make things clear, TWC's attempts at simplification oftentimes makes things worse. An example is the map named "Isobars/Precipitation". If they want to be simple, replace "Isobar" with "Pressure", and go through the trouble of animating H's and L's like local forecasters do. Another example is the strict adherence to the 4-color rain and snow scheme. We have had big snows in the east, and yet the detail of where the snow has actually fallen gets washed out in a sea of violet because no one has the sense to use more gradations of color?

And mentioning trends, TWC seems to be a follower and never a leader, at least when it comes to actual weather and not ratings gimmicks. I give credit for their HD transition. However, remember how long it took for TWC to start showing actual city names on the radar? To show topography on their maps? To use color shading on the temperature maps? To start using winter precipitation radar? And when they try to innovate, the results are often poor. I really wanted to like TruPoint, but using the poor resolution and unlabeled Google map background so you can't really tell where you are on the map is not an example of good simplicity. They never could incorporate dropsonde data well or consistently, either, during hurricane season. Most local weathercasters can display forecast models better than showing them off a website, for another example, and apart from a few like Jim or Carl most OCMs seem ill-equipped. That ultimately may be why TWC needs to simplify, not because it betters understanding, but because it cannot present weather complexity with sufficient finesse across all of its OCMs.

By the way, do new graphics include new icons, or is it limited to new map sets and new show graphics? I'll be happy with just the latter, but both would make me ecstatic.

For whatever reason, the audio went silent for SD viewers in the middle of the 4:28 PM EST local forecast... and following the LF, 5 minutes of black. It took another minute for the blue LDL to come back on. After this, nothing else happened. Strangely, the HD feed was fine. I wonder if this could be related in any way...

I watched the 4:28 PM ET LF, and everything was alright for me. It's possible that your headend lost the TWC SD feed for a few minutes there.

Those icons do look more defined, they should not only update it on their website, but also on the IntelliStar. I also agree with what you said about the sun icons, they do look odd. I think they have too much shadow around them and they just looks like glowing circles.

Yeah, I'm not to crazy about the new sun icon. TWC shouldn't be going downhill with the icons (although, they're probably made to look like most news channel ones).

Actually I like the simplicity, and think one of the reasons the current set sucked is because they were too detailed and looked horrible when scaled down. That is another reason the classic icons were so good. The new ones look like they'll scale better.

Only problem I thought the icons had were the mix precip ones

During the winter, I think it is difficult sometimes to tell the difference between the rain and snow icons, and the difference between precip intensity (ie light v heavy). I think all the precip icons looked horrible on the LDL. A bad thing about the new icons is that it continues the waste of space in the bottom part of the icon if there is no precip, often making it look awkward when set against nearby text (see the satellite LF for frequent examples).

My two cents are to keep the changes for the different precip icons for small scale things but keep the detailed precip ones for the large icons like the detailed currents page in the LF.  The new sun can stay in the production bin.

What I really want to know is what TWC's true motive for this is. The last one, while I still don't understand it completely, TWC presented a reason for updating the icons. But honestly, there was no need. The other icons already looked realistic... what's the reason now?

Problem was confusion figuring out which icon it was. Probably had complaints for the small ldl icons and non animated HD ones. Mix ones were kinda hard to determine but they were fine to me.

The big problem with the 2006 icons was they did not scale to anything. They were a pain to make out - and as TWC expanded in mobile and Web, that became a problem. This update mainly tries to improve that issue. Indeed, this seems to be a revision to the hardest to read - precipitation and sun.

Yeah. I agree. I've noticed that the precip ones are like the ones on weather.com, in which different type of winter precip is separated and not overlaping. I guess this obviously shows the condition better.

This newer icon set's not too bad except for the sun ones, they look like cheeseballs. MMMM! Cheeseballs. Anyways, aren't they going in reverse with their icon set timeline? Shouldn't this newer set be the prototype ones?

It's gonna be interesting to see the graphics overhaul tomorrow. Now that I'm in the know, it won't feel like I was frozen in time for a dozen years. LOL!

Well, the change has been made on the Intellistar. At least with the old set, I was able to ignore the motions in the clouds on them... but these are like the motion ads on the Intellistar... you can't ignore them and look the other way so easily.

Changes made on the satelite, I dun like it  The old LDL fade comes up right as the local forecast starts (But on sat, it isn't local) The only thing for the forecast that is diffrent here is the icons.

I am a fan!  As I said earlier in this thread, like most of you, I am not really a fan of the sun icon.  The rain icons I like, even though they do kind of look like sleet.. but thats quite alright.  I know when it is 55 degrees, I am likely to see rain ;).  The new LDL is beautiful!  I like it.  I also like the new title bars and new supers.  I am impressed.

My guess is that you'll see the huge bar during unpopular or fail shows of the day, like DP and PME, yet I don't know where that leaves FO. Keep in the back of your mind that YWT and another day part should be getting new graphics soon, as stated in the first post of the thread.

Not so sure of that. There never was a clarification on just what "new graphics" meant. Possibly it means just new title bars and new L3s.

I like the fog icon, it looks very similar to the XL version.  :) Now that I got to see more of the new icons animated I have to agree with Aaron about the cloud icon,  it does animate pretty fast and they seem to have a "glow" to them. It would be nice if the precip ones moved a little faster. I'm interested to see what the sleet icon would look like since the rain icons have a sleet look to them. Also I think having the icons animated on the LDL is a nice touch.

I understand why you all hate the sun icon, but stop hating on the precipitation icons! I always had trouble discerning what  would happen on days when the temperature was near freezing. Now I can easily tell...this is rain, this is snow, and so on. Sure, the 2006-2010 icons were more realistic, but they were very hard to see in SD. Not all of us had HD, super-clear precipitation icons.

I am beginning to like the precip icons more since they are similar to the old-school icons from TWC's golden years...but the clouds are still too attention-grabbing, the suns are still glowing balls of cheese and I miss the old fog one already :(

Im new here so the newbie I am I guess this is worth my first post...

Im loving the new Local L-Bar (guessing thats what you guys call it, lol)

The sun icons are too bright it might as well be an orange blob on the forecast...

The L3 Graphics (not the Local L-bar) looks nice but looks really squished... It seems that the actual video broadcast is shrinking. Now half the screen is graphics used and the other half is video. Hmmm Im wondering what happend to the good ol'days where there was just one Local L-Bar and the broadcast. I can't complain too much because the new L-Bar is awesome (looking). I guess with graphics getting more and more "Awesome" I wonder when TWC is just gonna go virtual? lol

What I think it means is that because the new icon set apparently has no distinction between showers and rain, that nothing new was mapped to these icons, whereas for everything else, the new versions replaced the old.

My reactions to the new icons are mixed.  I liked the animated clouds a lot, but the sun definitely needs more contrast to prevent it from looking like a certain snack. :P  I could distinguish between rain and snow alright in HD, but I think they could have made the snowflakes a little bigger to make it easier to discern the two precipitation types.  The lightning should stand out a little more in the thunderstorm icons like it did in the previous set.  Overall, there are some improvements in clarity here compared to the last icon set, but I think they could have used a little more contrast to make them even better.

To me, it's weird that the fog w/ drizzle is animated with falling water droplets and a moving fog cloud...but the fog icon is static.  I also dislike the t-storm icon a LOT because you can't see the lightning on it at all.  I remember that the old icons for thunderstorm and strong thunderstorm were different, allowing for someone to look at it and say 'oh, maybe I should pay attention to the weather more today" instead of "oh, there's another cloud that looks like everything else on the screen" or something!  haha  Just a thought.

I wonder what the Dust, Haze, and Smoke icons would look like on this new set...
Dust didn't exist in the 2006-2010 set, so I highly doubt it will be on this set.

Martin or Aaron- Did you happen to get that video of Stephanie showing the XL icons?

Actually it did, it also doubled as a "Smoke Icon".

Do icons animate on all LDLs, large and small, SD and HD? :dunno: That is REALLY a nice touch.
No animation on HD. All SD icons animate on all LDLs

On the SD National LDL, the icons do NOT animate. :( Is this true for everyone else, too?

With the introduction of the big LDL, the l3rds become l2/5ths:

TWC shouldn't call them lower thirds anymore...just..."the graphic that takes up half of the screen which you don't see most of anyway because the LDL is normally wasting all of that space anyway."  Any takers?

Becoming captain obvious for a sec, but I' definitely not a fan of these new L3rds.

Derek, I can't seem to find it. Are you sure the XL icons made an appearance during the 9:00 hour that morning?

Yep. Just remember it's around 9 - 9:20 ET. Not sure what time zone you're in...

It's actually 40%, or 2/5ths... When they big LDL is on, they're called lower two-fifths >_> .... With the little LDL, they're still l3rds :P

lol, well now that we're bringing these crazy fractions into it     hahahaha

I would love the lower thirds more if they didn't have to be that huge because of the oversized LDL and the HD info that wastes space and shoves useless info down your throat.  :cry3:

I know I have a clip of Stephanie using the XL suns last September.

Also, the graphics are still technically lower third tags, regardless of the size.

Well I finally make a reappearance on here! I'm sorry I've been missed for so long, I missed you all! I take it new music may be thrown into the works too?
No clue on that one. Base maps have changed on the BBOD graphics already so thats one change to expect

Are there going to be new basemaps? They're still all unchanged from before the "relaunch."

They were different on the BBOD graphics before the launch but now it looks like no. Perhaps someday

I love the new icons. Not as much as I love the XL icons but I think they did a really good job on these new ones. So, so much better than the old IntelliStar ones which were terrible in my opinion.

I even like the new Sunny icon.  B)

I'm also a big fan of the bigger LDL; it's great to be able to see the radar instantly and not have to wait for the Local on the 8s.

Though I thought the bigger LDL bar distracts from the on-air presentation, I think it's a very good upgrade. I still wasn't used to the 2006-2010 icons. I'm surprised they had new icons this early. I like the current icons much better.

Even a few weeks after the new icons I still can't adjust to them. Suns are just too goofy for me.

I've also noticed how the moons look like depressed and bland Easter eggs, and don't have that fully round shape it did with the previous two sets.

Same here, I don't see what was wrong with the older, more realistic ones. Seems NBC is just in a rush to change everything for whatever reason.  I also thought the average viewer could care less about the icons, and just watch TWC for their forecasts....
Title: Re: New Graphics and Icons
Post by: tuez13 on March 27, 2010, 01:17:37 PM
Of course, they have to put on a forecast for anybody to care about, first!  Instead, The WEATHER Channel is putting on movies, special shows that slightly relate to weather, and other "features" that clutter the screen and waste airtime for what could be used to show...WEATHER!!  What a concept!  Weather on The Weather Channel!!  lol

Anyway, the icons are still not what I would hope for in an icon set...and has anyone noticed that the lower thirds now have the white cutoff for where the LDL appears (which was not the case in the original design of the lower thirds)??

I noticed this morning that on the HD feed, the icons are proportional, i.e. the suns are actually round.  There must be an incorrect setting for screen size on the STARs which creates the images at an off proportion, then squeezes the wider image back to 4:3, thus making the suns/moons/anything round look oblong.

That's an excellent point... I didn't think about that. I was wondering why the moon icons looking like discolored easter eggs. I just thought it was how the icons were designed.
