First Outlook has started, and they're using new graphics. IMO, the opener is kind of short, but the presentation is still impressive.
All shows are also using the new HD style maps and the new HD radar system. Regional forecast maps now incorporate the precip colors and the maps on one screen so that's a plus. All map presentations are being done with Viz|Weather.
First Outlook is now the "full" edition of the show for all three hours.
Lower thirds are still the old ones with the logos removed.
More updates to come.

We've also got new graphics for the 5-day forecasts even though they were already being done using Viz|Weather to begin with. The new graphics fit in with the new on-air appearance for the other maps.

Weekly Planner maps, and all other precip maps for that matter, are now still, and they used solid colors again. Indeed, the past five years have been undone! Yay!

I just can't wait for YWT this morning and EE tonight. The graphics look really cool already, but imagine them in HD AND widescreen!! :D

Is it just me, or are they also using a new (and what appears to be a wireless) remote to control the system?

The red one? That one has been used for Viz|Weather since they incorporated Viz into the broadcasts last year. There should also be a few other clickers that control Viz, as well.
Is it me, or are certain maps being processed through the control room or something? The text on some maps is as jagged as the text coming from the control room as of late.
The LIVE tag has also been gone this hour; I wonder if it's gone for good or if it'll come back later at some point. After all, not many control room graphics are being used right now except openers and transitional effects. None of the lower thirds or full screen graphics are ready for broadcast yet.

Yea, I've noticed the jagged text and the missing live tag. You also brought up that the "First Outlook" logo is missing from the lower third. I don't know what's going on with all this, though it's probably tied to the upcoming HD debut.

They just used an old style satellite map with ridiculously large text labeling all of the countries; that was really weird.
They're also running WeatherPro type maps with the new look for the Tropical Update. They're using the square clicker that used to be used for SkyTracker for these maps instead of the smaller clicker with the white-ish buttons.

To add to that, I think this new radar might only be manually operated. I'm not seeing any buttons being clicked when the radar moves.
A new LF playlist should also be coming at the top of the hour along with the current day's ads. (they always start at 5 AM ET) I wonder if we'll see any new ads.

Hopefully we'll see new ads and (maybe) hopefully; then again, maybe not the new LF playlist. Most of the songs this month will come from the new TWC CD. Oh, I just saw a new Local on the 8s ad in HD. This is going to be a big day...

Did anyone see that ghost image of what looked to be a woman putting on earrings that displayed for a few seconds when they were switching cameras? That was creepy.
I think the reason they're not using the LIVE tags is because they would interfere with the new map title bars. We'll see if they develop new ones in the future.
We've also got new ads including a Hurricane Season 2008 ad with Dr. Lyons in the HD studio standing next to the map with the aforementioned HUGE text and Cantore in the field. Other new ads include an LF opener advertising the HD studio tour on the website, and the YWT ad has switched from, "The Weather Channel you know is changing..." to "The Weather Channel you know has changed." It now also displays the logo full screen at the end with the air times of the show listed at the bottom.

Yea, they're changing a lot of stuff so that by the time YWT comes on, most everything should be ready. BTW, I just saw a new Hurricane Authority ad.

I've got a feeling this type of music might pervade the entire network's image during this relaunch. We'll have to wait and see.

Oh, I saw the 100 Meteorologist one when I posted. I didn't see it at the time that you were talking about. Yea, I missed the 4:18 one. I also saw the bug in the studio shots, but I haven't got a chance to look at the lower third yet. Have they got the bug fixed there yet?

That's something that we'll have to find out as we watch.

Not sure; I think the satellite maps and the surface maps are still running on WPS or something like WPS. They have to switch sources from those maps to do the Viz presentations. Not sure why they're using the square clicker for the WPS-type maps, though.

Two more things:
1) The city indicators are broken on the Weekly Planner maps this hour. (Yes, it's now even called the Weekly Planner on FO)
2) I wonder if they'll replace the logo on the L3s or if we'll see entirely new ones soon. I'm hoping for new ones, myself.

No, I live in Hoover, AL. The blue LDL is only being tested in Atlanta and Pittsburgh. Still no bar, though.

They actually have been testing out a different font for the last several weeks on SkyTracker for select cities in the southeast and northeast. It looked pretty odd, IMO.
I'm also wondering if the WPS-style maps might be running through SkyTracker. Ever since last weekend, they've actually gained the ability to run WPS through SkyTracker, and Carl Parker had a field day by putting all of his usual telestration on top of the WPS maps to start his segments. He must love it. Further evidence includes a fade between the radar and the surface map earlier this morning; they've been using more elaborate transitional effects to switch sources this morning.

Yep, not surprising.
One segment down, and we've also seen the restoration of the anchor names being displayed for the two-person shot. They also brought back the region by region forecast at the top of the hour. I can only hope and pray they today will be the day that TWC works to restore all of the order to their broadcasts that has been systematically destroyed over the last few years.

I AM AMAZED!
I turned on First Outlook, and saw the blue LDL at the bottum of the screen, and thought "cool". Then I saw a new first outlook transition graphic, with the new logo. I never did get to see the lower third though. The new maps-- AMAZING. The maps themselves are simple, and I am a sucker for simplicity.
Then, YWT starts. I LOVE the new opener. It's short, but as I just mentioned, simplicity is a plus for me. And, I am SOOO happy that we are seeing SOLID FORECAST colors, instead of crappy animation! And, the lower thirds don't take up the whole bottum of the screen, I kind of like it :twothumbs:
I got the butterfly feeling this morning before YWT came on :P I'm going to miss Evening Edition tonight :( I'm gonna have to catch it tomorrow, or EEWC.

Also, a side note.. During the beginning of the Travel segment at 10 after, all three anchors were looking at the wrong camera. Must not be 100% used to it quite yet. But, I've got to hand it to them, they are doing a wonderful job :twothumbs:

I'm going to have start by saying I love the new graphics and HD studio. Kudos to TWC for getting it right! The music I'll have to get used to. So far, it seems more mellow than previous music packages.
Now...I have a big complaint. The FONTS in most of their segments, especially when they're standing in the HD wall are incredibly SMALL and I'm watching using a 37" HDTV. I can't imagine what it'll be like on a smaller TV. I'm hoping they'll notice this and correct it soon. It'll be sad to lose viewers simply because they can't read the screen!
On another note, I'm starting to miss the segments where the OCMS were on an actual chroma key wall simply because even when it is in HD now, it's NOT the same SHARP clarity and INTENSE color behind the OCM as it was earlier. IMO, It looks kind of opaque when compared to the map-only segments, for example.
Is it only me or is there a black bar on top and bottom of the maps on the HD wall? If so, I would appreciate they zoom the camera in, so we can appreciate the maps better. Maybe that'll fix the font issue.
All in all, it is an exciting time at TWC...

True, the maps do look a bit faded from the lighting.
I liked the comment about their new backup generator where Heather said, "Hopefully we'll never need that."
That would've come in handy on January 22, although they were still screwed without a working master control switcher.

Now, earlier I mentioned about the black bars on the top and bottom of the maps. What's its purpose? Does anyone find it annoying? I do. I'm all for less clutter on the screen.

Are you watching in SD? Those "bars" are actually the studio.

Yes, SD until Cox decides to carry the HD feed in my area. Regardless of it being part of the studio, I still find them out of place. Anyway, let's enjoy the new HD studio. Can we call it...the new Weather Channel...

i'm loving everything i'm seeing - thus far.
for some odd reason I woke up at 6:10 - 10 minutes after YWT HD debuted, so i turned on my tv and watched the whole six o'clock hour, amazing!

They pulled a telestrator out for the 7:50 CT Tropical Update. They're doing something different every hour to show off the versatility of the studio, I think.

I think I can definitely say that there's less lightning on the left HD wall. You can tell by the way Marshall's face darkens as he looks toward the monitor vs directly to the camera. Also, when compared to Heather's.
Also, has anyone pointed out yet that the OCMs have only been standing on the right side of the wall since the YWT broadcast began and do not move to the left? It looks like they don't have a monitor on the right side to look at.

They just used a new LIVE tag when they went to a live shot with Jim Cantore. Of course, it's halfway cutoff on my TV screen. <_<

It seems like it's only being used for the field shots, just like pre-2003.
The Alaska Forecast map used during the forecast hour was also completely 4:3 unfriendly. It took up the whole 16:9 frame! They haven't made that mistake since, however. :happy:

It looks like they have NO intention of having a permanent LIVE bug from now on during studio segments. I just noticed they showed a live shot of Los Angeles while the OCM was at the HD wall and the LIVE bug appeared for the shot and just as quickly it went away.

I'm sensing a strong influence from past DP packages in the new look. It's like the design of the 2005-2008 logo with the colors from 2003-2004.

Also, they don't seem to be using any sort of lower third on Day Planner so far. If, like First Outlook, they're going to be using the old lowerthirds without the logo, they're possibly working on that lowerthird right now. But I wouldn't think it would take that long to delete that logo from the lower third. :no:

It looks like they are staying away from actual shots of people/situations for the show presentations. The last time they had graphics only for openers was before the 2001-2003 package, back when it was just called Weather Center and Weather Scope.

The segment formerly known as "Weekend Outlook" prior to 2003 has officially made a comeback this era in the form of the "Weekend Forecast" segment so as to not interfere with with show "Weekend Outlook".

As for the new TWC HD "everything", WOW. What an amazing upgrade.
THIS is what I've been waiting for... and for years.
Unfortunately, I don't have TWC HD yet, but when I do, I'm sure I'll be even MORE impressed!
I did record onto DVD parts of First Outlook (5 to 5:25 AM) and Your Weather Today (7 to 7:25 AM).
I want to leave room on the same DVD to record as much as the full first hour of Evening Edition tonight
(got 1:08 of free space left). Part of why I am being conservative is that I want to record in SP speed
to preserve a good picture quality. The top speed is XP (1:12 of disc space).
One thing I see is missing from the new blue LDL for the SD feed. There is no date displayed after we see
the Local Weather ID. Hopefully Tyler or anybody that participated in the beta testing can point this out.

I guess it's worth noting that this new Weather Center package no longer refers to the travel segment as "Travelwise" - instead, it's simply called "Travel Forecast".

Now they're starting to use the Evening Edition in HD local forecast opener.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but the sponsor music has been changed to the new Weather Center music.
BTW, the new PM Edition music is probably the best so far. If this is a preview of what's next, the Evening Edition music will probably, once again, be a favorite.
It does seem after all that all shows music are fairly similar with this relaunch.

Edit: Forgot to mention: On First Outlook during the 6:50 AM ET Tropical Update, they were still obviously using WPS for an infrared satellite view, complete with old titlebars.

It's way too small for HD. It'll make for a good office, I'm sure. The future is next door in the HD building.

A&B's set was actually in the Weekend View set (which has been in place since 2005), it was interchangeable with the WV set.
And besides, even if they kept the A&B set, it would clash in horribly with in the current graphic set. :no: And as Spring Rubber said, it's way too small for high definition.

in the interactive tour - i could have sworn I saw another anchor desk to the right of the main desk area - but on the tour it said work area (or something similar).

New graphics/openers/studio look good. Not a fan of the Weekly Planner maps, as the city names cover up areas of the map. For example, the BOSTON tag covers up all of northern New England, where I am. Oftentimes, this area (where I am) gets different weather which is invisible now due to the placement of the text. Also, the maps are quite bland... no text. Nothing differentiating the shades of green... rain... showers... scattered storms... isolated storms... etc.
My LDL is still black... but I guess that's because I still have the XL. But wait... the LDL is a national thing, right? Meaning, everyone "should" see the same format, correct? Nope... forgot about the Jr still having all text. Then they should'a kept the transparent bar for XL head-ends. If the Jr still has all-text LDL, then the XL should be transparent.. but they switched that to all-black. But we do have the XL font and icons so I guess that's why. Is the I/S format changing for the LOT8s?

My take on today's relaunch -- AWESOME! :thrilled:
Thus far, I have only been able to catch DP and EE. I would love it though if later on, someone could post all show openers on YouTube? That would be great! :) The music on DP is alright, whereas the EE music is terrible! :wacko: VERY repetitive music, almost as if it was a :10 clip that was vamped! :\
Moreover, I am still seeing some mixups between the new fonts. Apparently, TWC is no longer themeing the Intersate font. Now, it seems as if the Heveltica font is the new trend. The new radar is still showing some cities with the Interstate font, and so are some of the other graphics. I think that is a problem, but I know they'll fix it.
Also, the utilization of live bugs are so important, IMO. The fact that they are only using them for live shots sickens me, and I hope they will make one soon that is perhaps in the upper-right corner so it doesn't interfere with the new radar titlebar.
The usage of two-person L3RDS are also very important, IMO. I am very glad we are finally seeing those. :) The new L3RD's themselves are very plain, which isn't a bad thing at all. I am still a lover of the 2005-2007 show L3RDs though.
The maps are amazing! It appears as if our prayers of simplicity have been answered. B) Thank you, TWC! :) The only problem is, the cities are displayed in "squares" which block the surrounding areas, if that makes sesne.?
Even though this launch seems to be going great, the non-utilization of key walls will take some getting used to. :hmm: However, it all seems to be going great and I'm sure over the next few weeks the minor flaws will be fixed and done correctly.
Tell me if anyone agrees with my points! :)
P.S. What ever happened to Jennifer Lopez leaving TWC? Also, who are the new anchors of FO? :unsure:

Not really. They didn't use live tags (except for LIVE shots like now) before 2003. And it's not really needed - obviously TWC is live all day (except for the overnight hours), otherwise, radars and other things that change often would be useless. It's a little bit awkward seeing the shows without a LIVE tag, but it's really not THAT different, seeing as it's happened before. :yes:

I remember reading a lot of comments from people who wanted them gone, so maybe TWC listened to those people. That's how it always used to be prior to 2003, after all.
From what we can tell, The new anchors of FO are going to be Jeff Morrow and Jen Carfagno, and we're not sure if there's going to be a travel analyst spot any longer. JLo should be leaving soon.

Back to the old Master Controlled solo-OCM format for the first hour of FO today. I wonder why they did what they did yesterday; I'm guessing they couldn't produce the show in Master due to the changes yesterday morning, just like they did the two person format all morning the day after the "meltdown" before they got Master working again.
Still no lower thirds being used yet.

During WYT, it had Titan |HD| up in the corner.
Yea, but you have to make sure you're watching it on the video wall. If they pull Titan |HD| up full screen, you can only see the title on the HD channel.

I don't actually mind them. TWC must have realized that you don't need a huge chunk of screen to show who is presenting the weather, or what is being shown :D I'm cool with that.

Overall, this isn't what I expected. I likewise don't like the idea of not using LIVE tags in the studio. The lower thirds are even more similar to each other than the older ones, and I don't like how they dont take up the whole screen. I was thinking they'd look like the lower thirds on the HD promos on twcmediakit. They were much better. Also, I was hoping the projector screens would look better than the chroma key, but it looks dimmer and it doesn't take up the whole screen, making it harder for me to see. I'd give this a 5/10.

First off, why does it matter if they use Live tags or not? I mean, it takes up more space (not much), but still.
Second, Does it matter that they all don't have the unique lower thirds. We experienced this a couple years back back in like 2004 when many of the shows shared the same lower thirds.
But, I suppose it's your opinion :twothumbs:
I do kind of get where your coming from on the whole Lower Third taking up the whole screen thing, but again, less space.
I'd rather the meteorologist stand in front of the chroma-key. However, watching Sharon last night, she was WAY too close to the camera.
But, I think this is the best thing TWC has done in years. I give it probably an 8 or a 9/10

I know that it's probably nothing big, but I wouldn't mind if they unstretched some of the content they show on the video wall. I mean, it's not that bad, but I just think that it would make an already great product even better. Just my two cents; I don't mean to sound like I'm complaining about it...

I've seen that happen before, maybe a year or so ago. It's also worth noting that the base maps for the Thunderstorm/Precipitation forecast on the SD satellite LF have been updated.

Abrams & Bettes has slowly been taking a turn away from the show focused around Mike and Steph towards being a more weather-focused show. The biggest leap came this January when they started doing the Weekly Planner and started covering much more weather at the maps. It's a good direction for the show, I think.

Yep, they're definitely still using SkyTracker for the SD shows. Just now on A&B, they were using SkyTracker, complete with the red zoom in box.

However, to support the SkyTracker argument, I just saw that "West Point" was still written in the Interstate font.
They've got a weird setup there now for sure; perhaps they're piping the SkyTracker feed through Titan, if that's possible? They were piping WPS through SkyTracker last week at times.

They're using what seems to be a generic Serve Weather graphic (which I've seen a few times today during Day Planner and Weather Center), and I believe that may be the only new graphic which actually uses the TWC|HD logo.

It's not anymore; for some reason they just did it that one day for no apparent reason. the first hour is back to being master controlled with only one anchor.

I really miss the old Evening Edition. The graphics were plain and simple and theme music which was composed by Stephen Arnold Music rocked.

After a long pause at the end of the first hour of EEWC's teaser, they played the opener music over a "title card" to start the show; they must've had a problem calling up the opener for some reason.
Bonus points to whoever can tell me who was the female anchor of EE the last time they used a title card as an opener.

Well, time for me to stay up late to see the new weekend packages. Weekend Now is definitely going to be watched on a recording, though; there's no way I'm staying up until 10 AM local time. :P
Also look out for the new co-anchor of Weekend Now tomorrow; it should be Kim Perez.

All of these new graphical and music themes are very very similar, which indicate they were definitely made by the same company. I would love to know the graphical company that made the graphics as well as the company that composed the music. Then again, it is still a mystery who composed most of TWC's music from 05-08...perhaps now that it is retired TWC will be more lenient about giving out information regarding that. I'll see what I can do, if you guys are interested.

Ugh, how cheap! The Weekend Outlook package is just the First Outlook package with a different logo, slightly different colors, and different music. Somehow I'm not surprised, though.
They're also using the 05-08 generic LIVE bug. Somebody in Master apparently doesn't know they're not supposed to use that anymore. They're also using the afternoon L3s.

Now, from the "Wow, I never thought I'd ever see this on the air again" department, They just played the 03-05 Weekend Planner Travel opener at 3:40 CT. Whoever is in Master today is really messing things up!
They're also playing a Dr. Anna Marie segment that looks like it's in HD; 4:3 viewers, however, are probably getting the edges cut off unless it was letterboxed for you guys. The segment wasn't 4:3 safe.

Wow, nice job by the graphic makers. I wonder if this means we'll eventually see a butchered in-house version of the opener to correct this problem instead of paying the design company to fix the problem.
BTW, they are actually letterboxing the Lifestyles segments on the SD feed today and presenting them in HD on the HD feed; that's about the only thing this morning Master crew has managed to get right. The LIVE tag is still up and is still obstructing the map titles.

Weekend View is still "home" in its normal studio, so apparently A&B did move out due to the graphics clashing.

I was still pretty much asleep at the time, but I think I might have seen the Weekend View live tag in use at 7:10-7:14 AM ET, thought it might have been an allusion because the new map banners have that same blue triangular look to them.

Yeah. TWC seems to have a new "9-note chime" for almost all of their segment openers. I really love the graphics, and the music isn't that bad.
BTW, I really like Weekend View's new opener! The one for Weekend Now is too short IMO.

Now to continue Weekend Outlook's identity confusion, we've still got the Weekend Planner segment openers, but now they're using the 05-07 Weekend Outlook bumper music to go to commercial. Hey, at least they got rid of the LIVE tag.
Edit: Hmmm... now they're using the LIVE tag at the desk but not at the key wall.

The original package had that feel the most, but alas, times have changed. I think the new package captures the feeling somewhat...
