Title: Jumped the Shark?
Post by: tpirfan28 on December 07, 2007, 06:38:29 PM
Someone on another forum that I frequent started a topic about cable channels that have "jumped the shark" (gone past their prime, starting to go away from main purpose, etc.)  One reply stated that "the Weather Channel can't jump because of the nature of the topic presented, just like C-SPAN."

First off, has TWC jumped the shark?  And second, how do you reply to the quote about TWC never being able to jump?

In my opinion, yes TWC can jump the shark, and it has. You see, when TWC first came about, it was 24 hours hours of nothing but good ol fashioned weather, there was none of this long form hogwash, and the OCM's were allowed to be ugly, because looks didn't matter. Today's TWC is more about glitz and glammer and drama than weather. Ask any long time TWC Fan, and they will surely echo my thoughts.

EDIT: Oh, and need I mention that what weather TWC does still have has been dumbed down so much that a preschooler can interpret it?

Thats pretty much what all news-type stations are about: looks. probably won't ever change.

They are walking a fine line of the 'all Global Warming-all the time channel' which, in my opinion, will make them irrelevant...just do the dad-gummed weather and do it BETTER than anyone else...forget the agenda....the eye-candy (with the OCM's) is fine with me....I don't care, nor do I look.

I really wish they would've come up with a better title for when a channel or TV show turns away from its original premise. A reference to an episode of Happy Days or not, "jump the shark" is pretty lame title IMO. At any rate, I agree with most of what's been said here. Of course a news channel can J.T.S. Just b/c the topics change all the time, doesn't mean they can stray from their original vision. TWC J.T.S. when they debuted Atmospheres.

IMO, TWC jumped the shark in late 2004, when they added a bunch of extra screens to their IntelliStar system. They also started rearranging the OCM schedule around that time, and started making all of the programming the same, unlike before where all the programming had different segments. That was also when they really started making such big deals over little storms.

My new slogan for TWC: "The Global Warming Enthusiasts" or "Bringing Overhypness to Life"

All that stuff pales in comparison to the bigger things TWC did. Frankly, the OCM schedules don't make a difference to me, and they don't make a difference in the quality of the programming. Are there certain OCM's that are arguably better than others? Sure. But personally, I don't care about who presents the weather, just as long as someone's doing it, and as long as its being done more often than long form programs are shown. Same for the addition of screens to the Intellistar. It doesn't take anything away from the programming, nor from what their original vision was.
