I just went to tune into TWC, and DirecTV has lost both the SD and HD feeds from TWC and is currently displaying DirecTV technical difficulties messages on both channels. Is everyone else's providers still getting a feed from TWC?
-
Black screen here, too...
-
Black screen here, too.
-
At least DirecTV is playing some vocal music to compensate; it's like May 7th all over again! >_>
-
Not sure if this is related (it's probably nothing more than a coincidence), but the radar on my Weatherscan is unavailable.
-
Black screen on TWC here as well. WXScan, however, seems to be just fine.
-
wow, how weird. i wonder who screwed up where :P
-
I just saw a test pattern on screen appear on screen then it disappeared a few seconds later.
-
Satellite LF appeared at 11:28 PM ET.
-
how weird, my screen has stood blank, no testing signals or satellite. i wonder if cable companies are trying to take this in to their own hands, can they do that?
-
I'm getting the silent looping satellite lf right now.
-
As of 11:38 PM ET, my Weatherscan has No Report. Nothing, no CC no forecasts.
-
Now music is playing on TWC, but there's a black screen.
edit: the music stopped for a minute, then the satellite LF came in, then the screen went black and the music came back.
-
Now back to the silent looping satellite LF...
-
My TWC screen has remained blank, no changes whatsoever at any time. My WxScan now appears to have frozen on a blank blue screen. The scroll is still moving though.
-
I am having this issue as well. Music playing is unknown.
-
Wow - too bad my TV Tuner is broken, could be getting GREAT footage of TWC and Wxscn right now.
-

Don't worry, I'm recording a lot of it. :thrilled:

Excellent! :sunglasses:
-
Just saw a test pattern flash on and off the screen.
-
Noticed a blank screen earlier and thought something was up. Just turned it back to TWC...and am getting a silent satellite LF.
EDIT: Now a blank screen with music.
-
Just saw a test pattern flash on and off the screen.
Same here.
-
Great someone is recording this, my portable camera i got for christmas is no good.
-
There really isn't much to see but a black screen and some Rippingtons-like music.
-
I've decided to remove the post I was responding to, mostly because no such conversation exists.
I also removed it for the sake of peace. :P
-
So that's it? Tyler posts once and everyone's finished here?

Pffft. If that's the case, I may as well throw in the towel 'causeI ain't got a chance in hell. :P
-
On going still, music is playing 2 songs though.
-
Hey, someone;s still interested in talking to us! :P
-
I'm still lurking here, but no one else is really talking...
-
That's not the case at TWCC. :whistling:
Or so Tyler says. :whistling:
-
I wish DirecTV would play a raw feed of TWC; I'm missing all the action...
The rock music isn't bad, but I could listen to that anytime if I wanted to.
-
It appears as if nothing on weather.com has been updated since 10:25 PM EST...including radar, current conditions, etc.

DirecTV is interrupting my feed of TWC most of the time with their own technical difficulties message and rock music from XM.
-
You both are better of than I am. I've had NO audio whatsoever.
-
Wow, TWC must be having a total meltdown.
No kidding. Very, very odd, to say the least.
Hehehe, I just checked an Atlanta news website to see if there was any mention of something happening at TWC stuidos. :thrilled:
-
I wonder what's causing this!?

Currently seeing a commercial.
-
Now the commercial's gone off and we're back to black.
-
Currently seeing a commercial.
Wow really? First I miss out on the static screen and now I miss a commercial?
-
Yep, a single commercial, and then back to black.
-
BREAKTHROUGH: The song that has been playing on and off is "After Dark" by Dave Koz!!
-
Apparently that static screen happening automatically triggered DirecTV to go back to its tech. difficulties screen. Prior to that, I saw the raw TWC feed for about 10 minutes.
-
BREAKTHROUGH: The song that has been playing on and off is "After Dark" by Dave Koz!!
Well the Dark part certainly applies. :P
-
Currently seeing a commercial.
Wow really? First I miss out on the static screen and now I miss a commercial?
I gave up 30 minutes ago. I switched back over to San Francisco at Gonzaga on ESPN. Just thought you might like to know that. Kthxbye.

Alright, today's TWC is officially gone. Time for Gary to shutdown and pack his bags and start a-walking. :P

Coming soon: "TWC Yesterday, but not too long ago"

Alright, today's TWC is officially gone. Time for Gary to shutdown and pack his bags and start a-walking. :P
:ninja:
Your just pushing your luck, aren't you? :P
These guys want nothing better than to get out of here and join the cool party at TWCC, so tempt them and they'll come. Right now your Outage thread is probably a monster compared to my 4 pages worth.
Do you ever wonder what its like to have to compete with that? :ninja:
-
Sorry Gary. You know its just all fun and games, right? Well, I hope you do, at least. :)
Yeah, we have a 18 paged thread... :ninja:
-
If it'd make you feel better, I could act like Gil and make a bunch of posts w/ just a emoticon (Iknow how much you adore those!), to get you up to 18 pages.
:P
-
It might be fun for you, but its no fun at all if your the guy in charge around here. :(

No thanks. That just makes people want to leave more. :P

Sorry Gary. Didn't mean to push your buttons there. :blushing: No hard feelings? ;)

So it's safe to say that Tyler and Matt have set fire to the studios, TWC HQ, etc. killing hundreds if not thousands in the process all in an effort to shut down TWC Today?
:P Kidding, of course.
Please don't ban me.
-
i'm really ticked as to why I'm not seeing these random feed moments. gah! i give up...night. lol.

1:19 AM - Trammell is playing!
-
Old icons on Satellite LF. :thrilled:
-
Lucky you Billy. I STILL have NO audio at all.
-
Well two steps in the right direction: old icons, and audio+video together.
But, HOW did the icons just switch, like THAT? Instantly. No screen jitter or anything. New icons one sec, old the next. Wtf?
-
You mean you guys have video too? What's up with that?
-
Yes, Gary, I have video+audio now,
Weatherscan is COMPLETELY frozen now.
-
OLD icons? WTF
-
Well, DirecTV cut away the minute Trammell and the old icons came on. This sucks! :(
-
Yeah, my WxScan is frozen too.
I still can't figure out how you guys now have audio and video. I stillgot nothing but a black screen, and a silent one at that. :P

Hehe, I just threw that in there for dramatic effect. Worked, didn't it? :smoke2:
FWIW, it appears as if the radar on the satellite LF is not updating. This is a conclusion based upon the positioning of the precipitation in the Mid-West.
-
Yeah, my WxScan is frozen too.
I still can't figure out how you guys now have audio and video. I stillgot nothing but a black screen, and a silent one at that. :P
Your provider probably cut the signal, several people at the Classics are reporting the same thing, too.
-
Gosh, I'm jealous of you guys, I can't hear Trammell OR see the old icons. Bummer. :ninja:
Makes sense Tyler, since it seemed to literally cut off at the conclusion of the commercial I saw a little bit ago.
-
W00t:
:worship:
Seriously, this is un-fookin-believable. Too bad the Satellite LF version likely won't switch up... :(
-
Gary - curious, whats the time on your Wxscn if its frozen like mine? Mine is frozen at 1:33:31 AM. (even though its 1:29 am)
-
Mine seems to not be frozen again. The time is 1:28
-
Mine seems to not be frozen again. The time is 1:28
Still frozen here.
-
The only problems I'm seeing on my WxScan is that there is no CC's, and no Radar. Everything else seems to be just fine.
-
I don't get it. Why won't anyone talk here. There's probably upwards of twenty pages on tis over at TWCC, so you all MUST have SOMETHING to say.
-
Gary, I am making an effort. It's just no one else seems to follow me... :(
1:37 am - audio briefly stops, resumes after a few seconds. Sat LF still, Wxscn still frozen.
-
Old icons are back!! Billy, I didn't realize our tuner programs looked the same.
-

I know, I can't understand why everyone else is so silent. I KNOW that's not the case on your board. My own co-admin Stephen has not participated AT ALL, and I know he has over in your outage thread. This drives me absolutley batty.
BTW, I'm not blaming anything on you, so I hope your not getting that impression. :sunglasses:
-
A Green screen?!
-
Eh, Sat LF again... <_<
-
The screen just went green, now Trammell's back...
-
Just more black here.
-
Just more black here.
They don't like you.
:P :ninja:

:P :ninja:
Its a conspiracy I tell ya. :rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2:
-
In case anyone's wondering, here's the order that the Trammell songs play on the LF:
Fair Weather
Good Ol Days
Jumpin'
Life
Easy Times
Evening
Smooth sailing
A New Day
The Setting Sun
Do you Believe
Jamaican Jam
Good Times
Care Free
Lazy Days
Beach Frollic
Right now, we're on "Jumpin'"

I'm kinda getting used to the idea of a 24/7 Trammell Music Channel. It should be added to Comcast's "Music Choice" lineup! :P

POST #1:
This is hilarious - as normal, the Comcast folks had no idea what I'm talking about. She turned to the channel and said "I'm seeing a bunch of cities on a map of the Midatlantic." I tried explaining things to her but she was unreasonable. She's dead now.
:P (Just kidding, of course, about the dead part.)
POST #2:
Called the idiots at Comcast back and now there's a recorded message. But, I find it funny how they claim it's a localized issue and COMAST is working to correct it. Haha. Douchebags...
Anyone call Comcast before, and you enter your telephone number where you have service so they can play a recorded message if there are known issues? Well I did that, and here is the message I got word-for-word:
"Dear valued Comcast customer... we are currently experiencing technical difficulties with channel sixteen and one-o-one, The Weather Channel and Weatherscan local. Severe audio and video problems have been reported. These issues are known to be occurring in the following local Comcast locations: In the city of Pittsburgh: Downtown Pittsburgh, North Shore, Shadyside, Strip District, Brentwood, Breezewood, West View, Rankin. In the Eastern suburbs: Monroeville, Plum Boro, Penn Hills, Oakmont. Comcast technicians are working diligently to correct the problem. We apologize for the inconvenience. Enjoy your evening."
Meaniwhile.. it's a TWC issue, NOT a local issue
-
LOL. Comcast is the biggest bunch of douchebags on the planet.
-
Here's that green screen that popped up a few minutes ago.
Could that be the chroma key that the OCMs stand in front of?
-
You know, I'm seriously awaiting to see Dave Schwartz walk in front of one of the Satellite LF screens, all nonchalant... :P
-

ROFL, that would be so darned funny. :rofl2:

Weatherscan is officially back, with radar and all. Seems the radars been back for about 35 min now.
Still no CC obs tho.

Same. My Wxscan radar says Past 35 Mins, the time is close to being right, but still No Report for CC.
-
100 biggest Wx moments at 2:00 AM ET.

Got to see my Wxscn reboot, which allowed me to see my Wxscn Local Wx ID #:

Got to see my Wxscn reboot, which allowed me to see my Wxscn Local Wx ID #:
Awesome. I didn't see my Wxscan reboot, but I wasn't really watching it. That ID number seems to fit in with the domestic IntelliStar local weather IDs.
-
2:07 AM feed cut out.
-
Wxscn still doesn't have the right time and is still very jittery. I'm betting we'll see a national total-reset of all STARs sometime within the next few hours.
-
Old A&B LF open aired - blue screen, no LF/Sat LF
-
Sat LF now w/ Trammell again. Blue screen gone...
-
OLD A&B pomo... no commercials, back to 100BWM again.
-
A&B LF Open again, brief blue screen, Sat LF
-
Just got this from Nick over at TWCC:
This bit of info from Doug Kiesling over at the stormtrack.org message boards:
"Ok some of you will be jumping for joy but I just got a 411/911 phone call from a friend in Atlanta who heard the following.
TWC got knocked off the air tonight due to a power surge the fried some major electrical system.
Right now the computer local forecast stuff is running from what looks to be weatherscan.
But the report I got was that there was a very large bang or boom and then the live broadcast was gone."

mine started as a black screen at around 10:58pm and went to a satellite feed 30 mins later
-
This is a very interesting situation, to say the least.
I guess next time I see my TWC blank, I should stay up and discuss it :P
-
I don't know what's been said...but right now it's about 2-3 min. with an OCM then Trammell-ized Sat. Local, with the 98-06 icons.
I'm rolling the DVR right now...this is interesting.
-
I'm seeing the same thing you are tpir. You can tell things aren't normal-the very limited on-air time looks like its of the thrown-together-just-to-get-something-on-the-air variety.
As tpir said, its about 2-3mins of OCM time and then a satellite lf. An interesting thing that I've noticed is that the OCM's do not refer to the program by name when they come on the air. For example, at this time of day they'd normally start by saying something like "This is your Weather Today, and I'm Heather Tesch". Instead they simply are saying "Thanks for watching TWC". The other thing I've noticed is that graphics are very limited. The black bar has (obviously) been gone, no lower third graphics, and no name bar when they identify themselves. Finally, I've noticed that the oin-air presentation has been limited to a nationwide look at the radar, and the same nationwide look at the sat/rad. For all intents and purposes its nothing more than an OCM narrating a satellite LF.
EDIT: Saw some commercials for the first time since I tuned in at the top of the 8 o'clock hour.
-
Has anyone else heard a faint hum or buzz during the OCM segments?
I hope we see Dave today with this mess...that would be verrrry neat to watch.
Woah...commercials at 8:46. The Claritin TWC extra narrated thing didn't narrate, though.

Yup I'm hearing the buzzing...
-
Yep now that you mention it me too.
Tyler, watch your P's and Q's today. Be VERY careful. That's all I'm going to tell you. One wrong word will likely get you banned.
-
Seeing Marshall Seese for the first time this morning.
If anyone here gives a shit. <_<
-
And I believe TWC might be officially back. At 9:59 PM ET the satellite LF went black for a minute, then then new satellite LF flashes, then Day Planner starts with teasers then. Looks like the control room is back and functioning!
-
10:08 AM ET, satellite LF is back with new icons and regular music playlist.
-
Hey, someone bothered to keep us informed! <_<
Yeah everything looks normal again except the Lf, which is still showing the satellite feed. The audio feed, however, seems to be restored as Trammell has stopped playing.
-
My IntelliStar is back as of 10:10 AM ET.
-
Yeah, same.
-
Satellite LF at 10:18 AM, then music feed switches midway during the LF.
-
I just want to take a moment to thank you all for your wonderful participation during this event. Really. If it wasn't for you guys, TWCT would've been COMPLETLEY in the dark. Not that we weren't already close enough. After all a 9 page thread versus a 40+ page thread really seems to tell the story, but I'll let you all draw your own conclusions on that. Of course, that in itself isn't a huge letdown, after all TWCC has a far bigger (and apparently more loyal) member base than we. No, the big kicker here is that all 40+ pages over there came from my own members. I sat here this morning watching Billy go to town over there, wondering if he had forgotten that we exist.
BTW, I'm not expecting clips of this from anyone. Surely TWCC needs them more. After all, they apparently can't let go of current TWC stuff. What losers. <_<
-
So...umm...I've got six hours of raw footage that I'm willing to chop up and donate....do you want it?
-
So...umm...I've got six hours of raw footage that I'm willing to chop up and donate....do you want it?
I'll take 'em. I didn't say I wasn't accepting donations. I said I wasn't EXPECTING them, given everyone;s commitment to TWCC with this.
-
STAR is back...and HiRAD is down.
-
STAR is back...and HiRAD is down.
Ditto, except only the IS LDL is functional. Still getting the Sat LF here.
-
Same here.
-
As of the 12:28 PM CT LF, my IS is now completely back up and running. :D
-
I saw it this morning too. I get no icons on the LDL
-
I'll have to wait for at least 10 minutes until live on-air programming returns, but I have the black bar back.
It has the backup CC site's weather data on it (Westchester County Airport in White Plains instead of
downtown White Plains, the primary site).

And my IntelliStar is finally back at 5:58 PM ET.
-
HiRad is back now...and the syncing problem at the start of the Locals seems to be fixed now.
It was a fun 20 some hours, wasn't it?
-
The music is playing to the unedited end at the first minute then a second song pops up

I've joined TWC Today after I looked for answers as to what was happening today at TWC. I found this website and decided to contribute my information as to what happened. I live in Salt Lake City and have Crapcast Cable. A few hours ago we had the Intellistar back up but the music wasn't starting or stopping on time. If a power surge happened at the studios, how would that be damaging to the equipment?
PS: I too find it weird that the forum that is dedicated to the past would be more visited than the forum dedicated to the current... <_<
Also, wouldn't it be cool if the old icons made a comeback at least for a while on the V3 Intellistar?

First of all, welcome! Thank you for joining us! We're very happy to have you!
That said, a surge can easily destroy electronic equipment because said equipment cannot supress the surge and is not designed to handle such surges. Depending on how severe the surge was, they may have had to replace or repair many many thousands of dollars in equipment.

PS: I too find it weird that the forum that is dedicated to the past would be more visited than the forum dedicated to the current... <_<
Also, wouldn't it be cool if the old icons made a comeback at least for a while on the V3 Intellistar?
Yeah it was great to see the old icons

First of all, welcome! Thank you for joining us! We're very happy to have you!
That said, a surge can easily destroy electronic equipment because said equipment cannot supress the surge and is not designed to handle such surges. Depending on how severe the surge was, they may have had to replace or repair many many thousands of dollars in equipment.
Thank you very much for the welcome, I appreciate it!
It was very interesting to see what TWC had in its arsenal in case of any type of malfunction. Seeing Heather Tesch and Kim Perez doing the forecast with the makeshift graphics was interesting and reminded me of the old days. I can't remember the last time they actually showed a satellite image except perhaps on EE w/Jim Cantore or maybe someone else on TWC with experience (not dangly-jewels with the tan from who knows where). I also haven't seen Kim Perez on air before since I don't get up early enough to watch First Outlook. Definitely a TWC outage that won't be forgotten in the near future

You mean Alexandira Steele?

Why yes, yes I do :P

Interestingly enough, I was thinking the same thing this morning about those makeshift graphics. I thought "Wow, this is like a trip back to TWC's past!". Definitley an outage I won't soon forget! :sunglasses:

How did the makeshift graphics look like?
-
How did the makeshift graphics look like?
There were no graphics other than a satellite map and a radar map for the most part.

How did the makeshift graphics look like?
Really, they were noting more than a some maps, radars, and satellite images with the generic titlebar at the top. No fancy WeatherViz 200 graphics or anything. :P

The Skytracker was still working interestingly enough
-
Did they display the 4000 icons?

Did they display the 4000 icons?
No, but they did display the old XL v.1 icons. :sunglasses:

Yeah, that was quite strange that SkyTracker was still working. I had expected them to have used the old radar images, or even the NEXRAD radar feeds.

I miss the old radar images, especially the ones (and I'm trying my best to describe this) the circle-type radar image that had the name of the state labeled.

That would be that the NEXRAD radar.

Ah, excuse my ignorance :blushing:

The SkyTracker unit being used had the pre-June 2007 style, so I'm guessing it was an older (possibly backup) unit.
...and I do agree, some of what we saw this morning was reminiscent of what TWC should be like today, just with a little more organization, of course.
BTW, the HD feed is back, but the HD LF is still down, and the SD satellite LF is still playing at a random order and fading (not hard-cutting) back to the studio, so there's still some work to be done before TWC will be back to 100%. I wonder how they'll handle this.
-
I would of probably stayed up for this, but I have midterms this week so I had to make sure I'd get enough sleep.

That was exactly my problem as well.

I still have to commend the team at the Weather Channel for patching something together instead of displaying something else, such as a non-stop Sat. LF. I wonder how they got the equipment back up to make it work...

Apparently NewsBlues reports that they broadcasted from an "earth station" several miles away rather than from the TWC studios, as we had originally assumed.
-
Anyone notice that there are still some timing issues? At the end of the LF at 9:58 PM ET, after the STAR had finished the local forecast, the satellite LF was exposed for another 5-10 seconds.
-
Yeah, and it's fading back to the studio instead of hard-cutting. There are still issues to be dealt with.
-
At 10:06 PM ET, the screen went black, then the satellite LF made an appearance for a few seconds before the commercial break.

Interesting thought that just occured to me-we beleive that the cause of TWC's problems was a power surge that destroyed equipment (or at the very least damaged it). But could that really be the case? I mean, wouldn't you think they'd have some sort of surge protection/supression in place, to prevent catastrophes such as this? I mean, you'd think any company whose very operation and livelihood depends solely on computers and other electronics which are very delicate and easily destroyed by power surges would take some kind of steps to protect their equipment from these kinds of issues.
-
I don't know. I thought I've heard of networks going down for that reason in the past. I guess they can't protect against everything; they can only try.
-
It just seems to me that when valuable equipment, money, and viewership are at stake you go to whatever lengths you have to keep that from happening.
I've personally never heard of this happening at any of the other national cable networks.

We had a surge at the station back in July of last year, it all depends on the power of the surge I guess.. There are some systems that can handle it and some that can't.. For example, the video source switcher, if it gets over 5V of power, it will turn off.. But if it gets more then 5v of power like lets say 100v of power, it will detect that and turn off, but the voltage would be so high it could bypass it and fry the switcher... Thats talking small voltage tho. This surge at TWC was enough to fry some equipment and knock out everything in the process.

Yeah, we're talking about a fairly major surge here. The kind that TWC should've been protected against. The very fact that some systems are more delicate than others is precisely why you'd think they'd be protected. You can't protect against every small surge, but you certainly can and should protect against something of this magnitude.

Got to hand it to them though, they went in to disaster control and have done a really good job so far. I'd hate to be working on the night of the aforementioned events.
Some small information here, master control is being run by Airboss right now, versus Saturn.
-
What are the technical differences between Airboss and Saturn?
-
I swore i just heard a 3 minute long lf. Then commercials started, and Jennifer Lopez was right in the middle doing a forecast
-
Lets look at this from something we all know, graphics applications..
Airboss is like MS Paint, Saturn is like Adobe Photo Shop.
Satrun is much more effcent when it comes to timing and event scheduling. Airboss is good at timing and scheduling, but all it does is switch sources and doesnt play the clips its self. Saturn actually plays the files its self using a file server.
I think Saturn is back up now, scheduled events seem to be running on cue.

So when will the lf errors be fixed?

I agree totally with that. They did a fine job of getting back on the air as quickly as they could. Those whose job it was to get that done should be proud of the job they did.

I would love to know what water equipment failed, I doubt TWC will release a press release about this as I doubt they will want to show it off, lol.. But their recovery is something to be proud of.
I've got a group of friends at TWC who I hope to hear from and get the details!
-
Did TWc apologize for the outage?

Yeah I'd certainly love to here the details of what happened. Hopefully that group of friends of yours will be able to get you some info. :sunglasses:
