On the HD feed at 5:43 pm the program video was shrunk to have more room on the bottom.
There was a lower third on the screen giving forecasts by region.
I checked the SD feed and the video was regular 4:3 letterboxed. It had no L3 giving the regional forecasts.
Anyone know why only the HD feed had it?

At 5:48pm was the regular local on the 8's LDL.

This is normal. I'm not sure why it was just on HD...

The video wall during DP has the show logo repeating over a light blue background like it used to.

What's the reason?

Probably due to the Heavy Rain in the Northeast

How many times is TWC going to show the Stage Collapsing in Indiana?  they must be that desperate for viewership

How many times are they showing it? :dunno: This is definitely a top story, so they should show it, although I'm sure plenty of people have already seen it on weather.com and YouTube.

There's not much else going on in weather news right now, and TWC always milks a story very hard.  However, this one is valid as five people are dead due to a tragedy caused by thunderstorm winds.  What hurts me is that it all could have been prevented!  They knew severe weather was coming, so why didn't they cancel the concert until the next day and order everyone to go inside?  Like I said, if people are clueless about what to do with the weather, our forecasts and warnings mean nothing.

First that stage collapse in...Canada, was it? And now this. Both caused by the same thing. I agree with Patrick; if the concert directors had taken a look at what happened in Canada, they would have been smart and called off the concert.

There's many questions for this tragic incident. I am a little confused, as I heard on the news that a severe thunderstorm warning was issued 10 minutes prior to the stage collapse but that some people (don't know if it was meteorologists or maybe the concert crew) weren't expecting the storm for another 20 minutes. As soon as the warning was issued, the people should have evacuated. Actually, as Patrick said, the concert should have been cancelled as a severe thunderstorm watch was issued in plenty of time.

Bottom line is, I hope no one even thinks twice about blaming the meteorologists for this tragic event, because they predicted it and issued a warning prior to the storm's arrival. What more do people need? :club:

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are issued all the time, usually for good reason such as doppler estimated winds. But people just shrug it off because most of the time it "isn't that bad". They don't realize that something like this can happen. My guess is that they only think that tornadic winds can cause it. People need to realize that just because it's not tornado-warned, doesn't mean it's not dangerous.

How can you say that? This is a huge weather related story and one of the top stories around the country. I see no reason why they can't run the story a few times

Bottom line is, I hope no one even thinks twice about blaming the meteorologists for this tragic event, because they predicted it and issued a warning prior to the storm's arrival. What more do people need? :club:

Take a look at this:

Quote
The stage toppled at 8:49 p.m. A timeline released by Indiana State Police shows that fair staff contacted the weather service four times between 5:30 and 8 p.m. At 8 p.m., the weather service said a storm with hail and 40 mph winds was expected to hit the fairgrounds at 9:15 p.m.

Bursten said fair officials had begun preparing in case they needed to evacuate visitors for the impending storm. At 8:30, additional state troopers moved to the grandstand to help in the event of an evacuation, according to the timeline.

http://www.theledger.com/article/20110815/APA/1108150538?p=1&tc=pg

The first you might think is that at 8pm officials should have called off the concert and indeed they probably should have. I have a friend in the entertainment industry who explained that it isn't so easy just to do that. The National Weather Service did their job but I also feel that the people in charge of the event were trying to do the best they could to respond to the situation. It is easy to point fingers and assign blame but I believe the best thing anyone can do is learn how to improve communications and try to prevent it from happening in the future. When you are dealing with tens of thousands of people it is hard to maintain a proper chain of command.
