From what I'm guessing, the maps were LED lights themselves, just like the map in the original A&B studio. Not sure how they burned out within only a few months of use, but it seems like they did indeed burn out since the right panel went out first, then the center panel only a few weeks later, and then several weeks later, the left panel finally went out.
On this video, from August 18, you can see the center panel is working but not the other panels.

they may be transitioning into using the new lowerthird for every show (with it's own identity [colors/logo]), usually lowerthird errors such as the one above are fixed within the the next hour. idk it's what i think, probably won't happen.

You may be on to something there...the new Lower 3rds seem more "NBC-esque" compared to the "old" ones from the HD relaunch

Yeah, that has always been there since they renovated the site early last year, but it's only on certain pages, and it's just the plain default text instead of Interstate or whatever it was on air. I doubt it will be brought back.
