The recent start of the monsoon season couldn't come soon enough for the desert southwest of the United States.
Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms have made its way into drought-stricken Arizona, including Phoenix.
During this late Monday night, there are very isolated areas of light showers, but nothing significant. While it is
slightly milder and overcast in the western two-thirds of the valley and the showers being on the southeast side,
it is clear and a few degrees or so cooler on the northeast side (evident in the Phoenix metropolitan area
current conditions weather map).

Although being a small chance of it happening, the threat of more showers and thunderstorms is in the forecast
for later today with high temperatures just above the century mark.

I have not added the transparent byline on the photo yet, but to give the appropriate copyright credit,
the current conditions graphic page background is by Pupkin at Flickr.

PLEASE NOTE:
Glendale Municipal Airport did not submit their latest weather observations at the time of this post,
so Luke Air Force Base has been moved from the regional observations graphics pages to being posted on
the Phoenix metropolitan area weather map for Glendale's latest observations. Cave Creek, Arizona also had
its reporting site not submitting their latest weather update, so I used Gila Bend, Arizona as well as
Casa Grande, Arizona for the regional observations list.

Thanks! :)

Within the last 6 to 8 hours, some areas of monsoon rain fell in the Valley of the Sun. To catch you up to speed,
check out Phoenix's local television coverage on the heavy rains that fell in parts of the region.

THE WEATHER OBSERVATIONS POSTED BELOW AREN'T CURRENT. THEY ARE FROM EARLIER IN THE DAY.

This is expected to be the hottest day of the week in the Valley of the Sun this afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to be near record high readings for today's date and it could do the same tomorrow.
Many locations are already above the century mark at this midday hour, so we'll see how hot it will get today.
There is a Heat Advisory in effect for the Phoenix metropolitan area until 8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time tonight.

Sky Harbor International Airport is close to setting a new all-time record for most 110°+ days in a single year.
Please note I'm only including yearly totals. I'll add the monthly breakdown once I figure out how to post them
where columns are aligned. The following information is directly from the National Weather Service.

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE - PHOENIX, AZ
8:55 AM MST WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2007

2007 COULD SET RECORD FOR MOST 110°+ DAYS AT PHOENIX...

Through August 21st, there have been 27 days with a high temperature of 110° or greater at
Sky Harbor International Airport. This ties 1936, 1974, 1985 and 1989 as the 3rd most on record.
The most on record is 28, which occurred in 1979 and 2002. See Table 1 below for additional information.

However, summer 2007 is far from over.  The latest observed 110° or greater temperature occurred
on September 15, 2000, meaning there is nearly a month-long window remaining when 110°+ temperatures
are climatologically possible. With high temperatures forecast to remain near 110° through the end of this week,
there is a high probability that 2007 will set the new record.

Have 110°+ days been increasing over the years?  Yes, based on observed maximum temperatures for Phoenix
from 1896 through 2007. See Table 2 below for additional information. Possible reasons for this trend include
urbanization and regional/global climate change.

TABLE 1 - TOP 10 YEARS WITH HIGHS OF 110° OR GREATER AT PHOENIX

After reaching a high temperature of 109° in Phoenix yesterday, the new record was not set for most days of 110°
or higher in a single year. While it is forecast to reach 109° again today, there is no Heat Advisory in effect.

Thanks, Thunder2011.

There is a possibility that we might see that 110° day we are looking for. Temperatures will definitely be
well above 100° across the Valley of the Sun this afternoon and a Heat Advisory is in effect until 8:00 PM
Mountain Standard Time.

Surprisingly, when this report was made at almost the noon hour, it was 88° in Fountain Hills, Arizona.
Chances are cloud cover and its mountainous location likely has kept temperatures down for this long.
But it is expected to be 100° there as well.

There are a few reporting stations that failed to provide a report at 11:55 AM Mountain Standard Time,
so I made a few substitutions that are more regional than very local such as Casa Grande and Wickenburg.

Phoenix finally set a new all-time record yesterday for the most 110° days in a single calendar year.
Sky Harbor International Airport recorded its high temperature of 113°, marking the 29th time this year
it has been at least 110°. It surpassed the previous record of 28 days in 1979 and 2002.
It also tied the record high temperature for yesterday's date (113° in 1981).

Check out my blog entry for more details on this milestone. I also have plenty of local coverage from
Phoenix television stations and both metropolitan area newspapers on this story.

An isolated area of showers is moving across Phoenix at this hour with even a thunderstorm passing through
Scottsdale as well. Following the unseasonably hot temperatures around 90° for most of this week,
readings will cool down just a bit, but it will remain above seasonable levels for mid-November.
By Sunday, highs will be in the upper 80s under fair conditions.

THE WEATHER OBSERVATIONS POSTED BELOW AREN'T CURRENT. THEY ARE FROM EARLIER IN THE DAY.

It is a very unusually cool and damp day in the Valley of the Sun on this Friday, as temperatures are only in the 60s
and widespread rain can be found across the entire region.  I'll let you view the National Weather Service statement
for more details

http://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=psr&wwa=flash%20flood%20watch (http://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=psr&wwa=flash%20flood%20watch)

A low pressure system from near Baja California and another low pressure system from the California coast
will combine with abundant tropical moisture to produce significant rain over southeast California and
the Lower Colorado River Valley including Yuma through tonight. The air mass will become rather unstable
and this will lead to locally heavy rainfall which may produce flash flooding. Rainfall totals from 1 to 2 inches
are possible with heavy thunderstorms.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on November 30, 2007
A FLASH FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING.

Locally heavy rain likely this afternoon through early Saturday east of the lower Colorado River Valley...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for portions of south-central Arizona, southwest Arizona and west-central Arizona
including the following areas in south-central Arizona... greater Phoenix area... northwest Maricopa County...
northwest and north central Pinal County and southwest Maricopa County. In southwest Arizona, southwest deserts.
In west-central Arizona, west central deserts.

From this afternoon through late tonight, a vigorous Pacific low pressure system will combine with
copious subtropical moisture to produce significant rainfall over the western and central Arizona deserts
starting this afternoon and continuing into this evening. The airmass will become rather unstable
late this afternoon and this will lead to locally heavy rainfall which may produce flash flooding.
Rainfall totals from one to two inches are possible with the heaviest showers and thunderstorms.

The heaviest rainfall will occur with embedded thunderstorms and may cause flooding of the Centennial Wash
near Wenden as well as the sols wash near Wickenburg. Local flooding of other washes and streams such as
the Indian Bend wash are possible as well.

A Flash Flood Watch means that flooding of washes, creeks and other drainage areas is possible within
the watch area. People in the watch area should keep an eye on the weather and be prepared for immediate action
should heavy rain and flooding occur or a Flash Flood Warning be issued.

Here is some local coverage on the highly unusual heavy rains in the Phoenix metropolitan area today.

Title: Re: Phoenix Weather
Post by: NYCTWCjunkie on January 27, 2008, 03:05:39 PM
For the first time in nearly two months, most of Arizona will be receiving some potentially flooding rains today
and tonight. This includes the Phoenix metropolitan area, an area that had been suffering through drought
conditions for most of 2007.

I'll let you view the National Weather Service statement for more details.
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/psr/pns/StormUpdate.php (http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/psr/pns/StormUpdate.php)

A strong low pressure area will move across the desert southwest the next couple of days.
Copious amounts of moisture associated with this system will result in periods of rain, some of which
might be heavy at times into this evening.  A Flash Flood Watch will continue this afternoon and evening
for much of south central Arizona.  The threat of showers will continue over south central Arizona on Monday
with drier weather expected by Tuesday across the entire area.  Another weather system will bring
a slight chance of showers on Wednesday and Wednesday night followed by dry conditions on Thursday
and into next weekend. Expect cool temperatures to prevail this week.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on January 27, 2008
A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is in effect from 12:00 PM Mountain Standard Time through this evening.

The Flash Flood Watch continues for portions of east-central Arizona and south-central Arizona,
including the following areas... in east-central Arizona: southern Gila County/Tonto National Forest foothills
and south-central Arizona: greater Phoenix area, northwest Maricopa County and northwest and
north central Pinal County.

Locally heavy rainfall is expected to develop across the watch area this morning and will continue into this evening.
The heaviest rainfall will occur over the higher terrain areas of far northern Maricopa County eastward into
southern Gila County and perhaps the far north-central part of Pinal County. Rainfall amounts from 1 to 3 inches
are possible over the higher terrain, with ½ inch to 1½ inches possible at lower elevations of south central Arizona.

Rainfall of this intensity will almost assuredly result in rises to small streams and washes over the area,
including but not limited to Cave Creek, Cottonwood Creek, Sycamore Creek, Indian Bend wash and Tonto Creek.
Some of these creeks and washes could potentially overflow their banks. In addition, heavy rain expected further
to the north along with potential snow melt from the rim country will likely result in rising main stem rivers such as
the Agua Fria, Verde and Salt rivers. Finally, mudflows and rock slides will also be possible along area highways.
Particularly vulnerable will be Highway 60 between Superior and Globe as well as State Highway 77 through
the Salt River Canyon.

Hot, above average temperatures spread across the Phoenix area today, and will continue to be like that until midweek. I've included an almanac page in this report due to possible record breaking temperatures in the coming days.

A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for Tuesday due to very low humidity levels.

Title: Re: Phoenix Weather
Post by: NYCTWCjunkie on April 15, 2008, 04:40:15 PM
To follow up on Mike's report from yesterday, today is another unseasonably hot and bone dry day
in the desert southwest region of the United States. With temperatures nearly 10° above seasonable levels
and dangerously dry conditions in Phoenix, a Red Flag Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service
until at least 9:00 PM Mountain Standard Time tonight. This also covers the entire state of Arizona
and southeastern California.

After a high temperature of 98° at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix yesterday, peak readings are
expected to reach the mid 90s this afternoon and will be windy at times across the region. If you notice,
the relative humidity levels in most locations are incredibly low into the single digit levels, thus the need for
the Red Flag Warning.

While no rain is in the forecast for the remainder of this week, temperatures will cool down to around normal
for tomorrow as the forecast high temperature in Phoenix will be 84°, exactly normal for this time of year.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on April 15, 2008
A RED FLAG WARNING is in effect until 9:00 PM Mountain Standard Time.

Red flag warning remains in effect from 10:00 AM Mountain Standard Time/10:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time
this morning to 9:00 PM Mountain Standard Time/9:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time this evening for southeast California,
the Lower Colorado River Valley, southwest and south central Arizona due to strong gusty west to
southwest winds, low relative humidity and high fire danger.

A strong and dry low pressure system moving through the western states will lead to strong and gusty west to
southwest winds. Winds will be strongest over southeast California and along the Lower Colorado River Valley
late this morning and continue into the evening hours. Strong winds over the southwest and south central
Arizona deserts will not be as widespread as those over California and the Lower Colorado River Valley but are
still anticipated to be strong particularly over higher terrain spots. Winds over the western zones will be widespread
around 20 to 25 MPH with gusts in excess of 35 MPH.

Dry conditions with afternoon relative humidity dropping into the single digits will continue across the entire region.
The combination of strong west winds and low relative humidity in addition to high fire danger over
the Arizona deserts will lead to hazardous fire weather conditions.

Please advise the appropriate officials and fire crews in the field of this red flag warning.

Post by: NYCTWCjunkie on April 28, 2008, 08:10:42 PM
It remains unseasonably hot in the desert southwest of the country as temperatures are in the 90s across
the Valley of the Sun this afternoon. Due to incredibly dry conditions and winds picking up over the next
24 to 48 hours, the National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for most of the region through
Wednesday night. See their official weather statement below for more details.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on April 28, 2008
FIRE WEATHER WATCH is in effect from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening.

Fire Weather Watch in effect from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening for south-central and
southwest Arizona and the Lower Colorado River Valley due to strong southwest winds, low relative humidity
and high fire danger...

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a Fire Weather Watch which is in effect from
Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening for south-central and southwest Arizona and the
Lower Colorado River Valley. A strong low pressure system will affect the western United States
Wednesday resulting in increased winds. Sustained 20-foot winds of 20 to 30 MPH with gusts
approaching 40 MPH are expected late Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening.

In addition, very dry air will reside across the area with rh values below 15% likely. This combination of
strong winds, low relative humidity and very high fire danger may create widespread hazardous
fire weather conditions.

Please advise the appropriate officials and fire crews in the field of this Fire Weather Watch.

While there is no rain in the forecast for the remainder of this week (Phoenix as received NO RAIN this month),
temperatures will cool down to more seasonable levels in the mid 80s as early as Thursday.

It is even hotter today than yesterday as temperatures in some locations are approaching 100°.
The Fire Weather Watch remains in effect through tomorrow night.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on April 29, 2008
FIRE WEATHER WATCH is in effect from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening.

Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening for the south-central
and southwest deserts due to strong southwest winds, low relative humidity and very high fire danger...

Winds will increase across the south-central deserts Wednesday afternoon as an area of low pressure strengthens
well northeast of the region. Southwesterly winds will approach 20 to 25 MPH with isolated gusts to 35 MPH for
a few hours, mainly across the higher elevations of northwest Maricopa County. The windy conditions combined
with the persistent dryness may result in an elevated threat for dangerous wildfires.

Please advise the appropriate officials and fire crews in the field of this Fire Weather Watch.

Title: Re: Phoenix Weather
Post by: NYCTWCjunkie on May 19, 2008, 07:45:00 PM
After eclipsing the century mark for the first time this calendar year with a high temperature of 105° at 4:44 PM
yesterday afternoon (fell just 2° short of the record for that date), it is expected to be even hotter today
in Phoenix. Yesterday also saw Yuma, Arizona reach a record high temperature for yesterday's date of 113°,
breaking the old record of 109° set back in 1958.

Much of that hot air that gripped the west coast of California late last week and into the just completed weekend
where records were set in cities such as Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles, has moved into the
desert southwest of the country and also into the southern Great Plains with unseasonably very hot conditions.
Today and tomorrow are forecast to be between 105° to 110° in Phoenix before cooling off to the low 80s
by Thursday with a slight chance of thunderstorms.

It should be interesting to see how hot it gets during the daytime hours of today and tomorrow for Phoenix
in addition to locations west of the city.  An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for Phoenix until
8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time. Check out the latest National Weather Service statement for more details
as well as this page.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/psr/pns/FirstHeatWave.php

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on May 19, 2008
AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING is in effect from until 8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time.

After an unseasonably hot period, much cooler and windy weather headed our way by midweek.

A strong area of high pressure aloft will make for unseasonably hot temperatures the first couple of days this week,
with afternoon high temperatures from 15° to 20° above normal. In fact, if the official high temperature at
Sky Harbor International Airport reaches the predicted high of 110° today (Monday), it will mark the first time
in recorded history that the initial 100° high temperature of the season was immediately followed the next day
by the first 110° reading.

Although the week will start out unusually hot, it will certainly not end that way. A strong Pacific low pressure
system will be taking shape the next few days and will drop south into the desert southwest by Wednesday
and beyond. This system will help to push a strong cold front through the area Wednesday and Thursday,
giving much cooler temperatures. In fact, by Thursday, we can expect high temperatures at least
25° to 30° lower over those expected today and Tuesday.

In addition, as the system approaches, strong winds are expected to develop by late Tuesday and especially
on Wednesday. Gusts exceeding 40 MPH are likely across most areas of southwest and south-central Arizona
as well as southeast California. These strong winds will likely produce areas of blowing dust and sand that
could reduce visibilities at times to under one mile.

As the cold upper low gets closer to the area by Thursday and Friday, it will begin to pull some moisture into
the region from the south. As a result, there will be a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday
into the upcoming Holiday weekend.

By Sunday and Memorial Day, the upper low is expected to move away from the region, allowing some warming
to return to the area, along with more settled weather.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your other favorite sources of weather information for the latest
regarding this upcoming significant change in the weather.

Title: Re: Phoenix Weather
Post by: NYCTWCjunkie on May 20, 2008, 06:55:45 PM
I’ll just let the National Weather Service statements make things self explanatory. Let me just say it is to be
yet another scorcher in Phoenix before a dramatic cool down later in the week. One item I can mention is that
yesterday’s high temperature at Sky Harbor International Airport reached 110° at 4:42 PM Mountain Standard Time
to set a new record for the date, surpassing the old record of 105° previously set just two years ago.

After another unseasonably hot day today, much cooler and windy weather in store tomorrow
into the end of the week.

A strong area of high pressure aloft will make for unseasonably hot temperatures across the area once again today
with many new records expected to be broken as afternoon high temperatures will range from 15° to 20°
above normal.

Although the week has started out unusually hot, it will certainly not end that way. A strong Pacific low pressure
system will be taking shape the next few days and will drop south into the Desert Southwest by Wednesday
and beyond. This system will help to push a strong cold front through the area Wednesday and Thursday,
giving much cooler temperatures. In fact, by Thursday, we can expect high temperatures at least 25° to 30°
lower than those being forecast today.

In addition to the cooler temperatures, strong winds are expected to develop by Wednesday. Localized gusts
approaching 40 MPH are possible across southwest and south central Arizona as well as southeast California.
These strong winds will likely produce areas of blowing dust and sand that could reduce visibilities at times
to under one mile.

As the cold upper low gets closer to the area by Thursday and Friday, it will begin to pull some moisture into
the region from the south. As a result, there will be a chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday
and Friday, most numerous over south central Arizona. The threat of showers will decrease on Saturday.

By Sunday and Memorial Day, the upper low is expected to move away from the region,
allowing for some warmer temperatures to return to the area along with generally sunny skies.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your other favorite sources of weather information for the latest
regarding this upcoming significant change in the weather.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on May 20, 2008

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING is in effect from until 8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time.

Record high temperatures can be expected again today across the deserts of south central and southwest Arizona
as well as southeast California as an unseasonably strong high pressure system remains over the area.
Some expected high temperatures this afternoon include 112° at Yuma, 110° at Blythe and Gila Bend
and 109° at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport as well as Parker, California and Imperial California.

It would be wise to complete as much outdoor activity as possible in the early morning when the sun and heat
are less intense. During periods of excessive heat, individuals can suffer heat-related illness when the body
can no longer cool itself.

If you plan to be outside for an extended period of time in the afternoon or early evening, stay in the shade
as much as possible and drink abundant amounts of water. Wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.
If you wear a wide-brimmed hat, your head and body will be much cooler. Stop outdoor activities,
drink lots of water or other non-alcoholic beverages and if possible, spend more time in air-conditioned or
well-ventilated places.

A FIRE WEATHER WATCH is in effect from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening.

Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening for southeast California
and southwest and south central Arizona due to strong winds, low relative humidity values and high fire danger.

A strong low pressure system will move into the southwest United States Wednesday. As it does,
strong southwesterly sustained winds of 20 to 30 MPH with gusts in excess of 40 MPH will develop across
much of the region during the late morning hours through evening hours. The combination of strong gusty winds,
relative humidity below 15% and dry to very dry fuel conditions will lead to hazardous fire weather conditions.

Please advise the appropriate officials and fire crews in the field of this Fire Weather Watch.

Title: Re: Phoenix Weather
Post by: NYCTWCjunkie on May 21, 2008, 03:45:30 PM
For the second straight day, a record high temperature was set as it reached 108° yesterday at
Sky Harbor International Airport, breaking the old mark of 106° just three years ago.  It was the third straight
100°+ day in the Valley of the Sun and while it will be at least 10° cooler than yesterday, there's a small chance
some locations may reach 100° again today. It's not likely in Phoenix itself as today's forecast high temperature
is expected to reach 95°. Two other regional locations set records yesterday.

Phoenix (Sky Harbor International Airport)
Yesterday's high: 108° (old record was 106° in 2005)
Yesterday's low: 80° (old record for highest minimum temperature was 79° in 2007)

Yuma, Arizona
Yesterday's high: 112° (old record was 110° in 1942)
Yesterday's low: 78° (old record for highest minimum temperature was 76° in 1966)

Blythe, California
Yesterday's high: 111° (old record was 110° in 2005)

Imperial, California
Yesterday's low: 78° (old record for highest minimum temperature was 73° in 1968)

Meantime, Phoenix is under two National Weather Service watches or warnings at this hour.
The entire state of Arizona with the exception of Coconino County is under a Red Flag Warning right now.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on May 21, 2008

A RED FLAG WARNING is in effect from until 9:00 PM Mountain Standard Time.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a Red Flag Warning which is in effect from 10:00 AM
Mountain Standard Time this morning to 9:00 PM Mountain Standard Time this evening for southeast California
including Joshua Tree National Park, the lower Colorado River valley and southwest and south central Arizona
including Tonto National Forest due to strong winds, low relative humidity and very dry fuels.

A strong low pressure system is moving into the region today. Strong southwesterly sustained winds of
20 to 25 MPH with gusts in excess of 35 MPH will develop across the region late this morning and persist well into
the evening hours. In addition, relative humidity levels will be at or below 15%. The combination of strong
gusty winds, relative humidity below 15% and very dry fuel conditions will lead to hazardous fire weather conditions.

Please advise the appropriate officials and fire crews in the field of this red flag warning.

A WIND ADVISORY is in effect from until 11:00 PM Mountain Standard Time.

A strong low pressure system will move into the southwest United States today. This will cause strong westerly
winds to develop late this morning and persist well into the evening hours. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 MPH
with gusts over 40 MPH can be expected. The strong winds may lead to areas of blowing sand and dust
developing this afternoon across the Lower Desert locales which would impact travel along major corridors
such as Interstate 8 and Interstate 10 and Route 85 and 95.

A Wind Advisory means that sustained wind speeds of between 30 and 40 MPH are expected or wind gusts
of between 40 and 58 MPH. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
In addition, strong winds over desert areas could result in briefly lowered visibilities to well under a mile at times
in blowing dust or blowing sand. Use extra caution.

As I had previously mentioned, the chance of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow (Thursday)
will mark the start of a cooling trend in time for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
I will be putting together the graphics pages as soon as possible.

PLEASE NOTE:
Glendale Municipal Airport didn't provide their latest weather conditions for this hour, so Luke Air Force Base
is being used for Glendale. It is located to the west of its downtown area. Also, neither Goodyear, Arizona
nor Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa, Arizona provided their latest weather conditions, so they aren't
included in this report. Goodyear, Arizona also didn't provide their latest data, so nearby Avondale, Arizona
will be shown on the metropolitan area weather map.

After seeing record breaking heat in the triple digits just days ago, Greater Phoenix is now in the 70's, and even some 60s in a few locations. Gusty thunderstorms are in the forecast through tomorrow night. It will then warm up through the weekend, followed by possible triple digit heat again by midweek next week.

Below are the 1 PM MST observations when Phoenix was in the 70's. As of 2 PM, Phoenix is now 64°!

Here comes the seriously extreme heat for Phoenix and across much of Arizona.
This may end up being the hottest day of the year so far.
Take a look at the latest National Weather Service statement for more details on the extremely hot conditions.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on June 15, 2008

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING is in effect until 8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued an Excessive Heat Warning which is in effect from 10:00 AM
Monday to 8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time on Tuesday. The Excessive Heat Watch is no longer in effect.
An Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect from 10:00 AM this morning to 8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time
this evening.

Strong high pressure aloft will bring unusually warm weather to the deserts of southeast California and
southwest Arizona over the next few days. High temperatures will generally range from 108° to 112° today
through Tuesday. In addition, low temperatures Monday night will be in the mid-80s, near record high levels.
Those who depend on cooler overnight temperatures to escape the heat should be prepared for warm temperatures
Monday night. A very weak cooling trend is expected to start Wednesday and continue through the end of
the week.

Stop outdoor activities,
drink lots of water or other non-alcoholic beverages and if possible, spend more time in air-conditioned
or well-ventilated places.

Graphics pages will be posted as soon as possible.

PLEASE NOTE:
Falcon Field in Mesa, Arizona did not provide its latest weather conditions, so Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport's data
will be used on the metropolitan area maps.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on June 17, 2008

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING is in effect until 8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time on Thursday.

The Excessive Heat Warning is for the lower deserts of south central Arizona and includes the greater Phoenix metropolitan area as well as the cities of Gila Bend and Casa Grande.

Strong high pressure aloft will continue to result in excessively hot weather this week with daytime highs and nighttime lows 8° to 12° above normal. High temperatures over most Lower Desert sites will range from 110° to 115° through Thursday. The forecast high at Sky Harbor International Airport today through Thursday is 113° while the forecast low is around 85°. This puts the maximum temperature within 2° of the record high value for each day.

It would be wise to complete as much outdoor activity as possible in the early morning when the sun and heat are less intense. During periods of excessive heat, individuals can suffer heat-related illness when the body can no longer cool itself.

If you plan to be outside for an extended period of time in the afternoon or early evening, stay in the shade as much as
possible and drink abundant amounts of water. Wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing. If you wear a wide-brimmed hat, your head and body will be much cooler. Stop outdoor activities, drink lots of water or other non-alcoholic beverages and if possible, spend more time in air-conditioned or well-ventilated places.

Graphics pages will be posted as soon as possible.

Unfortunately I was not able to file a report yesterday (Saturday) as it was the hottest day of the year in Phoenix.
Hopefully I'll have time to do one later today. If not, I'll ask someone else to do one as this is a big weather event.
The high temperature reached 115° at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, tying the record for the date set in 1968.

Here are a few local news sources covering the relentless extreme heat in the desert southwest of the United States.

The major heat wave continues across the southern half of Arizona and much of souther California today.
Could we see the eighth straight day of 110° or higher in Phoenix? Sure looks like it is...

Either way, it is broiling hot here. What did you expect? Then again, it's the second half of June, not late July or early August.

Here are the high temperatures over the last three days that were tied or broken during this heat wave...

Imperial, California
Thursday's high: 116° (old record was 114° in 1961)
Friday's high: 116° (old record was 114° in 1981)
Yesterday's high: 116° (old record was 115° in 1978)

Parker, Arizona
Thursday's high: 117° (tied record from 1961)
Friday's high: 118° (tied record from 1929)

Bouse, Arizona
Friday's high: 116° (old record was 115° in 1981)

Yuma, Arizona
Friday's high: 116° (tied record from 1892)

Phoenix (Sky Harbor International Airport)
Yesterday's high: 115° (tied record from 1968)

Blythe, California
Yesterday's high: 116° (tied record from 1981)

Casa Grande, Arizona
Yesterday's high: 116° (tied record from 1936)

These data are preliminary, but highly reliable. The official data may be accessed from the National Climatic Data Center.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on June 22, 2008

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING is in effect until 8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time on Monday night.

The intense upper level high pressure system responsible for the prolonged period of excessive heat will weaken only slightly during the next couple of days. So, very hot conditions will continue though a slow downward trend in maximum temperatures will occur during the next few days.

Forecast highs for today include 113° at Phoenix, 114° at Yuma and Imperial and 115° at Blythe. Morning low temperatures will be several degrees warmer this morning and Monday morning due to a slight increase in low level moisture.

During the next couple of days it would be wise to complete as much outdoor activity as possible in the early morning when the sun and heat are less intense. During periods of excessive heat, individuals can suffer heat-related illness when the body can no longer cool itself.

Title: Re: Phoenix Weather
Post by: NYCTWCjunkie on August 01, 2008, 09:49:55 PM
Just like it was back on June 22nd, the desert southwest region of the United States is expected to be roasting
once again with near record high temperatures. If those in North Texas, Oklahoma and elsewhere in the
southern Great Plains think they have it bad, they might want to see what it is like in Arizona today.

High temperatures this afternoon may reach the mid 110s in the Phoenix metropolitan area and western portions
of Arizona and with that, an Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for the next 24 hours.

The National Weather Service's Phoenix forecast office posted this weather page (http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/psr/general/safety/heat/) due to the extreme heat,
even for Arizona standards. Here is what the National Weather Service has issued:

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on August 1, 2008
AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING is in effect until 8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time on Saturday night.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix is continuing an Excessive Heat Warning for Maricopa County including
the greater Phoenix area and northwest and north central Pinal County. This Excessive Heat Warning is in effect
from today to 8:00 PM on Saturday.

Excessive heat with near record high temperatures are forecast today. It was a very warm night last night with the
minimum temperature near the all-time record high minimum temperature of 96° at Sky Harbor International Airport.
It is forecast to be at least a couple of degrees hotter today compared with yesterday.

Some forecast highs for today include 114° at Sky Harbor International Airport, 115° at Gila Bend and
113° at Coolidge. Saturday's highs are anticipated to be a few degrees lower, but still hot. Little in the way
of relief is anticipated during the overnight hours, with temperatures only bottoming out in the lower 90s
in the urban areas including Sky Harbor International Airport.

It would be wise to stay inside in an air-conditioned building today through Saturday. If you must work outdoors,
it would be wise to complete as much outdoor activity as possible in the early morning when the sun and heat
are less intense.

During periods of excessive heat, individuals can suffer heat-related illness when the body can no longer cool itself.

Here is an update for you. Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix recorded their second highest all-time
daily minimum temperature this morning as it only got down to 95°
. Only one day in recorded history was it
higher and that was on July 15, 2003 when temperature bottomed out at 96°. This morning's low tied two
other days on record when it was 95° on August 12, 2003 and July 22, 2006. See this page (http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/psr/pns/2008/August/RecordHotMorning.php) for more details.

Also, less than two hours ago was when the temperature reached its high for today,
113° at 5:19 PM Mountain Standard Time
, just 3° short of the daily record of 116° in 1972.
The extreme heat is expected to back off by Monday.

PLEASE NOTE:
Even though it is dinner hour in Phoenix, I'm keeping the daytime forecast data so that in this rare instance,
we can compare the actual high temperatures with what was forecast. Also, Falcon Field in Mesa, Arizona
did not issue their latest weather observations, so Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is being used for Mesa
on the metropolitan area weather maps instead.

Title: Re: Phoenix Weather

Temperatures around Phoenix are a good 10-15º below average today, though the temps will go back into the mid 90's by the end of the week. Some locations farther north were under a freeze warning as temperatures went as far low as the low-mid 10's.

A strong low pressure storm system brought moderate rain to southern California during the overnight hours today and much of that precipitation is moving through central Arizona at this hour. Temperatures are primarily in the 50s across the Phoenix metropolitan area.

It is expected to remain unsettled for the next 24 hours and that includes Thanksgiving Day. High temperatures are expected to reach the low 70s today and the upper 60s tomorrow.

The National Weather Service's Phoenix forecast office posted this weather page (http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/psr/general/safety/heat/) due to the extreme heat, even for Arizona standards. Here is what the National Weather Service has issued:

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT by the National Weather Service in Phoenix on July 12, 2009
AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING is in effect until 8:00 PM Mountain Standard Time.

Strong high pressure aloft centered over northern Texas will continue to produce excessive heat across the area. Temperatures overnight will offer little relief, only bottoming out in upper 80s and possibly near 90° at Sky Harbor Airport. Afternoon high temperatures Sunday are again expected to reach 110° to 114° across the lower deserts, including Yuma and the greater Phoenix area.

The heat is expected to persist into early next week and the Excessive Heat Warning has been extended through Monday evening.

Precautionary/preparedness actions…

It would be wise to complete as much outdoor activity as possible in the early morning when the sun and heat are less intense. During periods of excessive heat, individuals can suffer heat-related illness when the body can no longer cool itself.

If you plan to be outside for an extended period of time in the afternoon or early evening, stay in the shade as much as possible and drink abundant amounts of water. Wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing. If you wear a wide-brimmed hat, your head and body will be much cooler. Stop outdoor activities, drink lots of water or other non-alcoholic beverages and if possible, spend more time in air-conditioned or well-ventilated places.

National Weather Service Phoenix is on the internet at weather.gov/Phoenix.
