... Heat advisory in effect from noon to 6 PM EDT Wednesday...

The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a heat
advisory... which is in effect from noon to 6 PM EDT Wednesday.

* Locations... Nassau and western Suffolk counties.

* Hazards... heat related illnesses.

* Heat index values... up to 100 degrees... except at the immediate
South Shore.

* Timing... Wednesday afternoon.

* Impacts... potential health hazards to those prone to heat stress
such as seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental
disability.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and
humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 100 to
104 degrees for two consecutive hours.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible... reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency... call 9 1 1.

At home... use air conditioning to stay cool or go to a place that
has air conditioning. Drink water at regular intervals. Check in
on your at-risk family... friends... and neighbors... especially
if they don't have air conditioning or live alone.

... Strong to severe thunderstorms expected this afternoon...

A strong cold front will push south across the area this afternoon.
The heat and humidity of the past several days has created a very
unstable atmosphere across the region... and this will lead to the
development of widespread thunderstorms by early this afternoon.

The first areas to see thunderstorm development will be across far
northern New Jersey and the lower Hudson Valley... beginning around
noon or 1 PM. These storms will then move fairly quickly to the
southeast... reaching New York City and coastal locations between 2
PM and 4 PM before moving offshore by early this evening.

Some of these storms will be severe... with damaging winds in excess
of 60 mph and large hail. Flash flooding is also possible as the
moist atmosphere will allow these storms to produce 1 to 2 inches of
rainfall in a short amount of time. Frequent cloud to ground
lightning is also expected.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and local media outlets for the
latest information.

To help you guys get a better understanding of how cold it has been here. We were only 2 degrees away from tying a record low this morning. KISP bottomed out at 60°F, near the record low of 58°F set in 2001. Won't be nearing the record high of 101°F set in 1991.

It's that time of the year again when we can get those sea breeze pop-up thunderstorms!

... Strong thunderstorm will impact Suffolk County...

At noon EDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar was tracking a
strong thunderstorm developing near Ronkonkoma... remaining nearly
stationary.

Small hail is expected with this storm. In addition... very heavy
rain is occurring with this storm. This could cause ponding of water
on roadways.

From the NWS forecast discussion:

IT APPEARS TO BE MORE STABLE OVER THE S COASTS PER STLT...SO HAVE
KEPT THE FCST MAINLY DRY ACROSS PORTIONS OF LI UNTIL TNGT.
ELSEWHERE...POPS ARE BASED ON THE HRRR FOR ONGOING CONVECTION WITH
A BACKGROUND OF ISOLD CHANCES.

MAIN THREAT WITH THE LINE APPEARS TO BE WIND AS IT APPROACHES.
STILL TIME TO EVALUATE THE POTENTIAL...BUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF A
SIGNIFICANT COLD POOL COULD POSE THE MOST SVR WIND THREAT.

&&

.SHORT TERM /10 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
TSTMS WILL CONTINUE TO ROLL EWD AHEAD OF THE FRONT OVERNIGHT. THERE
WILL REMAIN THE THREAT FOR AN EMBEDDED SVR STORM...ESPECIALLY
ACROSS LI AS A BOUNDARY FORMS DUE TO THE ONSHORE FLOW AND LAND/SEA
INTERACTION. MAIN THREAT HOWEVER WILL REMAIN THE LOC HVY RAIN.

The National Weather Service in Upton NY has issued an

* Urban Flood Advisory for...
Suffolk County in southeast New York...
Nassau County in southeast New York...

* until 245 PM EDT...

* at 116 PM EDT National Weather Service radar showed heavy
showers and thunderstorms south of Long Island moving northeast
around 40 mph. These storms will cross Nassau and western Suffolk
County between 130 and 230 PM.

Maximum hourly rainfall rates will vary from 1 to 2 inches causing
rapid ponding of water in low lying and poor drainage areas
throughout the advisory area.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. Most flooding deaths occur in automobiles. Turn around and
find another Route.

Excessive runoff from this storm will cause flooding of urban
areas... highways... streets and underpasses as well as other drainage
areas and low lying spots.

Be prepared to take action if the flooding threat increases... or a
warning is issued.
