So much for "Clearing skies".
They said that it was going to be sunny yesterday...Clouds.
They said that it was going to clear up overnight...Clouds.
They said that it was going to clear up this afternoon...Clouds.
-
Holy crap its clearing up!!!!!!!!!

It seems that forecasters are wrong almost all the time these days.

And you'd think that it'd be just the opposite. You'd think that with today's technology forecasting would improve.

Yeah really. Some improvement
-
It was sunny and 80 today! it was awesome 8)
-
Yesterday it was VERY humid all day. At my autns house, about 35 miles south of here, it was pretty hot.
Good thing we were able to swim in her pool. :)
-
its 90ees, very humid.
Opened up Weather.gov and we got massive storms heading our way! Warnings in the next county, and a severe weather watch until 8 PM!!! THis sure hasnt happened in a LONG time!!!
WOOOT!!!!!
-
It'll dissipate, no question. Been there, done that.
-
It'll dissipate, no question. Been there, done that.
Yeah i know, but so far, doesn't look that way. It looks to be intensifying. I believe that we
might actually get something this time. Knowing our luck, though, I won't get my hopes up.
Pretty dark crazy skies! Its still very hot and very humid.
Currently in my backyard, its 93 degrees, and the Dewpoint is 67.
-
EDIT: its getting REALLY dark and the wind is pickiong uP!! :)
-
this thing is HUGE!!!! I've nevrr seen clouds this dark before!!! will post pics later!!
-
Wow...Rain, thunder, and wind. What a ripoff

Uhhh..what else did you have in mind?
Umm... penny sized hai., 80 MPH winds. Pretty much what the warning said.
Maybe thats good enough for you, but here, thats a ripoff.. We want huge hail, hurricane force winds, etc.
-
Told ya so, Gil :P
-
Told ya so, Gil :P
Yep, you did. :P
-
TEMP BEFORE THE STORM: 94 Degrees
TEMP AFTER THE STORM: 67 Degrees.
Pretty crazy.
-
I would think that would create a HUGE storm... :-\
-
Its a repeat of yesterday today.
***SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH UNTIL 9 PM CDT***
theres a long diagonal line of strong thunderstorms right around the Rockford area, moving east.
With Dewpoints in the 70s, and actual temps of 89, it is helping to fuel Thunderstorms.
-
The storm is knocking on our door this very second.
MY prediction: An area of weakness will develop RIGHT before it hits us, and we will get s :censored:
-
Wow, rain. Same useless crap as yesterday...
-
Wow the weather is amazing today, fter the cold front moved throuh yesterday! he temp its 67 Degrees, windy, sunny,
and NO humidity! :)
-
Its really windy here today! :rofl2:
-
Lvely weather here this evening. It was in the low 70s this evening, totally clear skies
-
Forecast: Tonight Through Tomorrow Night
Overnight: Mostly clear, with a low around 57. North northwest wind around 5 mph.
Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Calm wind becoming west southwest between 5 and 10 mph.
Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 63. Southwest wind between 5 and 10 mph.
-
Right now its Sunny and 83 degrees. its great 8)
-
Well, they are predicting Severe Weather tomorrow, but we all know its not going to happen.
-
LOL. Yeah the severe stuff never seems to happen for ya. :D
-
LOL. Yeah the severe stuff never seems to happen for ya. :D
I know. Stupid Lake Michigan >:(
Though i saw the areas of expected severe weather, and the areas covered makes it look somewhat promising. I doubt it though
-
Sad, but true Gary
-
Sad, but true Gary
Yah, and even when it does come, it always misses 10 miles south, or 10 miles north, and what not. Totally unfair
-
I've experienced plenty of the same kind of thing here. The Appalachians tend to help weaken storms before they get to this part of the state.
-
Yah, i think the Lake has something to do with it here. Everyone says it doesnt, but i'm convinced that it does.
-
I have no doubt that it does. Water acts in much the same way as mountains do. I've seen many storms come through my area and nearly die out as they were passing over the Chesapeake Bay. Over course, its not guaranteed that either will have any effect. I've seen plenty of storms roll across both and stay very strong.
-
Well we got a very short, but heavy downpour this afternoon. Couldn't have lasted more than 1:30 minutes. it got pretty soaked though.
We are now under a Flood Watch.
-
We are currently experiencing a Thunderstorm right now  :w00t:
-

That makes sense, except for the fact that the lake is east of us, so it's not like it goes over the lake first. It's just frustrating
-
Yah, and in Wisconsin, the huge storms go right over the lake and maintain their strength! That REALLY makes me mad >:(
-
Well the rain ended, and its kinda weird outside. its cloudy, but the sun brightens up the clouds. its VERY VERY Humid with a dewpoint
of around 70. this should help fuel storms later.
-
We didnt get any other rain today. Gee, what a surprise.
-
Well, they've been predicting severe weather for the past 3 days, and nothing has happened. still predicting it for today.
50 bucks says we're not going to get a drop of rain today
-
Well i was wrong. A thunderstorm is just starting to roll in. Theres lots of lightning and thunder, but hardly any rain.
Its so humid outside, as soon as you go outside, it feels like your skin is covered in sap. :o
-
The thunder is so loud, sudden, and huge that it almost gives you a heart attack!
-
Wow, sounds like quite a storm your having. :o
-
Yah, but we;re nit getting much precip. Its just really huge thunder. most of it past now.
-
Wow, the radar is actually in my favor tonight!! Might get some big-stufff.
-
We got a massive storm here!!! We got an inch of rain, and our power went out twice, each for 10 minutes which NEVER happens! It
only happens once every 8 years or so! huge thunder and lightning!!!!
-
Well, I guess you finally got your wish Gil! :D
-
Well, I guess you finally got your wish Gil! :D
Yah, now if there was hail, then it would've been complete :D
-
I was digging out a place for a new brick patio, and it fills like a bowl with water (five inches+)
Oh well, now I have a pool instead of a patio. Anyone want to swim in filthy flood water? :)
-
Anyone want to swim in filthy flood water? :)
I do!!!!! me me me me!!!!!!! :P :rofl2:
I have a brick patio
-
How'd I know you were going to say that? :rofl2:
-
How'd I know you were going to say that? :rofl2:
because i am a very predictible person. Sometimes. :)
-
Im so sick of this 75 degrees crap! Where the heck is the 100 degree heatwaves?!?!!? >:( >:( >:(
-
You have a thing for extreme weather don't you? :D
-
Sure do. I hate this stupid 75 degree mellow weather. its so stupid. I think Mother Nature is on crack >:(
-
I'll take the 70 degree stuff any day. More comfortable, no high electric bill because of having to use AC. Trust me, you'll prefer those kind of days too when you get older.
-
Well, I have a pool, so we usually dont use the A/C in 100 degree weather.
-
So....you stay in the pool all day? Otherwise, you'd be dead, because at 100 degrees outside the inside of a house is at 120+.
-
So....you stay in the pool all day? Otherwise, you'd be dead, because at 100 degrees outside the inside of a house is at 120+.
Nah, once you go in a pool for 10 minutes, your fine for about an hour
-

Nah, once you go in a pool for 10 minutes, your fine for about an hour
Wrong. Your only externally cooler when you get in the pool. Your internal body temperature only drops a degree or two. It only takes a few moments after getting out of the pool for your body temperature to return to normal.
-
I know from past experience. You cool down quickly, and stay relatively cool after.
Though, it all depends on water temperature, and other factors.
-
Like I said, your own EXTERNALLY cooler, not INTERNALLY.
-
Like I said, your own EXTERNALLY cooler, not INTERNALLY.
Hmm...Probably
-
LOL.
-
LOL.
What is so funny?
-
Nothing. :rofl2:
-
Ok :(
-
Its nothing bad. But mentioning it would just start trouble. So I'll just keep quiet about it. 8)
-
You can PM it to me. I promise I wont get mad or argue :)
-
Like I said, not a big deal. 8)
-
Well ok :)
-
Its cloudy today! Whoopee!!!!
-
We've been getting weird weather the past few days. A phenomenon I like to call Lake Effect Storms.
Storms form over the Lake, then move from East to West over the area.
It first started at 4:00 AM this morning. I had my window open and saw lightning. so i turned on TWC and saw
First Outlook for the second time in my life, and there was nothing but Red on the radar over the Lake!
Pretty carzy!
-
Ooo!
-
The humid/rain spell appears to have ended today (thankfully). Now its going to start warming up! B)
Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 63. North northeast wind around 10 mph.
Saturday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 80. Northeast wind around 15 mph.
Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 60. North northeast wind between 10 and 15 mph.
Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 81. East northeast wind around 10 mph.
Sunday Night: Clear, with a low around 63. Northeast wind between 5 and 10 mph.
Monday: Sunny, with a high near 84.
Monday Night: Clear, with a low around 65.
-
A cold front moved through last night, but its still 87 degrees right now. Humidity is high as well. This isnt supposed to stop
until late next week. Tomorrow it will be 85 with a chance of thunderstorms!

-
Yeah, it really goes to show how screwed we are up here with severe weather. Theres no other explaination, other than that the lake
steers it all away.
-
On Wednesday, we had an actual Tornado Warning for my part of the county. Unfortunately, I wasn't home when it happened. >:( But
my mom was...
So it was like 3:30 PM and my mom heard the tornado sirens, but the one right by our house wasn't sounding. so she turned on TWC
and there was a Tornado Warning, and the storm was heading right for us! We were actually listed as one of the towns in the path
on the warning. Well, we never did get a tornado, but they reported a rotating cloud at an intersection in Schaumburg, which is only
about 3-4 miles from my house!
Pretty kickass!! What really ticks me off is that the one day im gone, something like that happens. And I can guarantee it wont
happen for another 3-4 years! >:(

Did you excited seeing the funnel cloud? I would've had a trip of a lifetime to see a funnel cloud and/or tornado with hail, wind, rain, lightning and thunder.
-
Well we don't get the "OH MY GOD IS A FUNNEL CLOUD!!!" here, its usually "Hey look, an funnel cloud"
-
I'll be like. "Oh look, just another funnel cloud."
-
I'll be like. "Oh look, just another funnel cloud."
Ummm...Okay...

Wow, like you're so cool

Took some pics:

Interesting pix
-
thx :)
-
That's one odd looking sky.
-
It looks colorful, IMO.
-
I LOVED it today!! I was driving eastbound on 20, and the storm was following me
Gil, I have similar pics.
-
One more pic...Why is there a 4 pic max per post?
-
I don't know, because I didn't set the limit (nor did Stephen as far as I know), but I assume its to keep posts from becoming excessively long.
-
I wish I lived in the midwest. The weather here in Philadelphia is so boring.
-

Hey, we've got our Noreasters. That's something we have that they DON'T! :D
-
I wish I lived in the midwest. The weather here in Philadelphia is so boring.
I wouldn't be complaining. Here on the west coast, it's fog, sun, or rain. Nothing interesting whatsoever.
-
Pfft Nor'easters? Those are just puney little snow storms :D
Dan, thats pretty cool! We haven't had something like this happen in a VERY long time 8)

Do you get better snowstorms? :D
-
What? What the :censored: are you talking about? I would LOVE a Nor'Easter! I guess we just get Mi'Westers??
-
Chicago's airports were gridlocked from the severe weather yesterday.
-
Pfft Nor'easters? Those are just puney little snow storms :D
They can bring blizzards too. A few years ago there was a nor'easter that brought us some twenty or thirty inches of snow.

Yuck i hate snow. I hate cold weather. and ultimately, I HATE winter :P :D
-
I had no idea there was a huge line of storms heading this way! its such a warm, clear night!
-
The actual temp is -12, wind gusts nearly 45 MPH, wind chill -35...
-
Look at next weeks forecast!!
-
On weather.com, its basically the exact same thing we've been seeing for months, just a few degrees warmer. Only 2 days where it gets above 40...
-
Look at the NWS
-
Ahh now i getcha. Tuesday looks nice.
-
We have pea sized hail!!!!! Very active night here tonight. Isolated tornadoes a DEFINITE possibility!!!

Gil or Steve (Spring Rubber), did you smell kind of a burning-smoke smell today? I was outside and smelled it constantly...figured someone was barbecuing...then I go 30 miles north, and I still smell it. I wonder what's up

:thrilled: Look at this (http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=LOT&product=N0R&overlay=11101111&loop=yes). Apparently, it's called a "pneumonia front" and involves a RAPID and SHARP temperature drop. Going from upper 70s ahead of it to the upper 40s behind it.
It's so extreme, I was sweating 45 minutes ago. Now I feel a chill :brr:

I got to hear Stephanie Abrams's explanation of that the other day. It was right up there with the "lettuce layer" description. :P

5 years ago on this exact day, there was a funnel cloud right over my area (first one in history, I think) and they are predicting severe weather today! Scary!
I can post the pics of the weird cloud, but im sure everyone has seen them...
-
Wow, today actually looks like a pretty significant severe weather event! And for once, it's aimed towards my area! We are under a tornado watch until 6 PM.
-

I'd like to see it.

I'll lok for em.
LARGE TORNADO SOUTH OF CHICAGO, Heading straight for Indiana, right for Don (DJK)!!
-
This storm is HUGE!!!
At 6:15 PM, a LARGE (one half-mile wide) TORNADO was reported 1 mile west of Monee, or right near I-57, moving northeast into Indiana!!!!
Dual-Feed has interrupted the entire Forecast Earth program.
-
At 7:45 PM, NWS Radar indicated STRONG ROTATION in a storm over Tower Lakes, moving NE at 34 MPH.
Tower Lakes is only about 10 miles north of me!
For once, Major action in my area! :thrilled: :twothumbs:
-
Can you get some pics of the nasty weather?
-
We could use a thunderstorm or two to cool us down somewhat. I can't take this heat anymore, and the heat wave is far from over. It's 10PM right now, and the temperature is still 89 degrees and a heat index of 98.
-
It's 77 here. Come to the shore :D
-
The Weather Channel showed several of the video clips this morning.
Here's the tornado as it was in the Monee area:

***Please note the incredible rarity of a tornado of this magnitude in the Metro area.***
-
Hmm, too bad, just a quick rainshower here <_<
-
I wish I would've been outside a few minutes ago, we just had an outflow boundary pass through.
-
This pisses me off:
Hour and a half ago, Severe Thunderstorm warning. Storm line predicted to go right through me, with Winds over 70MPH. Big cell goes RIGHT OVER ME, and winds are no more than 20 MPH.
Mother nature really likes to screw me over lately. Some geographical feature screws me out of getting Severe Weather.
-
Today is nice, and sunny here! :D
-
Huge storms with tornadoes just passed from Elgin to Elmhurst to O'Hare Airport to Logan Square and Lake Michigan. A tornado must have passed just south of my house and expressway. We had funnel clouds over head and the sky got blood red.
Most horrifying storm of my life.
Hope everyone else is doing okay, especially at Wrigley Field where the CUBS game was in-play (reminds me of the ICHT episode about Chicago tornado, but not just as severe, thank God) and watch out Indiana and Michigan. We were fortunate to keep our power here, but it came close about 3-4 times to going out.
Cantore said that Chicago is under a "Possible Dangerous Situation" watch; something he said he's never seen in his 23 years at TWC. This must be a classification above a Tornado Watch because one wasn't issued for the area. We had a Severe T-Storm Watch out for the area before these storms blew through and now were under the "PDS" watch.
What upsets me is that TWC cared more about Eduardo near Galveston than the tornado here in Chicago. This happened for the 2nd time; the other being in early June. I bet you if this occured over Dallas, OKC, or K.C. TWC would be wall-to-wall coverage of it. But not Chicago. The local stations here didn't break in. NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX are doing terrible in the ratings (all trail WGN in all dayparts by a VERY large margin) and this could have helped to put them over the top. I guess we're just not that important.
-
What upsets me is that TWC cared more about Eduardo near Galveston than the tornado here in Chicago.
From what I've watch of Evening Edition in the past 20 minutes or so, they've been covering it pretty well.
-
Most horrifying storm of my life.
Not mine, but probably the second most horrifying. The sky was totally green here. The lightning was almost constant, and REALLY close too. Our power went out for about 5 minutes, the longest it's ever gone out, that I can remember. It was absolutely insane.
-

That's the best way to describe it.
EE covered the storms better when they came closer to downtown Chicago. But before they came that close, every time I'd look to see an update, it was always put off and aired after the Eduardo segment. All I'm saying is that if this happened in DFW, OKC, KC, or ATL, they would be covering it ahead of Eduardo.
Damage was found in a path from the Kennedy Expy. to Cumberland Ave. and into Lincolnwood and Park Ridge. Other reports came from Logan Square and Humboldt. Possibly 2 seperate tornadoes or a funnel touching down at multiple points and then going back up into the cloud.
More storms rolling through as I type this. I need to sleep already! :furious:
-
I don't recall this being a PDS watch  I've been tracking it on NWS, and there was no mention of PDS..
Actually, right when I turned TWC on, Cantore opened by saying "Eduoard has to be preempted to cover current dangerous Chicago storms" :)
-

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for Northern Indiana was a PDS watch because Jim also said out of the 23 years he's been at TWC he has never seen a PDS out for a Severe Thunderstorm Watch.
-
We got hail last night!!! First time in about 5 years! This was a lone cell that came hours later, not part of the tornadic system.
My weatherstation recorded over 2 Inches of rain yesterday!
-
Hey,last night was scary for me too. The sky turned midnight black, and, winds were everywhere. Then,my power went out. I was watching TWC at the time. Then, power was restored. I am ok. A large tree branch was knocked down last night. Rain flooded the streets. Reminded me of August 23rd.

On this New Year's Day, it is a typical late morning winter day in Chicago. Temperatures are in the 20s with some locations experiencing breezy conditions.
The big event today is the 2009 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic that will get underway at 1:00 PM Eastern Standard Time at Wrigley Field on Chicago's north side. The historic home of the Chicago Cubs hosts the second-ever outdoor National Hockey League game that is to be played in United States. The closest weather observation site to the stadium is ironically home to Major League Baseball's other team in the Windy City, and that would be the Chicago White Sox.
Chicago's 36-hour forecast information below is from Chicago Midway International Airport.

...SMOKE FROM NORTHEASTERN MINNESOTA WILD FIRE SPREADING INTO
NORTHERN ILLINOIS...
SMOKE FROM A LARGE WILDFIRE OVER NORTHEAST MINNESOTA HAS BEEN
MOVING INTO FAR NORTHERN ILLINOIS THIS AFTERNOON...DUE TO
NORTHERLY WINDS BEHIND A COLD FRONT WHICH MOVED ACROSS THE AREA
EARLY THIS MORNING. ALTHOUGH THE FIRE IS MORE THAN 400 MILES
NORTHWEST OF THE AREA...THE COMBINATION OF SINKING AIR AND
NORTHERLY WINDS BEHIND THE FRONT HAS TRANSPORTED SMOKE ALL THE WAY
INTO NORTHERN ILLINOIS. THE SMOKE WILL LIKELY PERSIST THROUGH THE
AFTERNOON AND INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS...BEFORE WINDS BECOME MORE
WESTERLY IN ADVANCE OF ANOTHER COLD FRONT WHICH WILL APPROACH
EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING. SMOKE WILL LIKELY CONTINUE TO SPREAD TO
THE SOUTHEAST ACROSS MUCH OF NORTHEAST ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST
INDIANA THROUGH THIS EVENING. EXPECT HAZY SKIES AND A DISTINCT
BURNING ODOR.
THE LAKE COUNTY ILLINOIS EMERGENCY MANAGER REPORTS THAT SMOKE IS
PREVALENT ENOUGH TO CAUSE PEOPLE TO REPORT DIFFICULTY BREATHING
AND BURNING OF THEIR EYES.
INDIVIDUALS WITH RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS SHOULD USE CAUTION WHILE
SMOKE AFFECTS THE AREA.

Chicago and Rockford Winter 2011-2012 (http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=lot&storyid=80153&source=0)
Note how 2011-2012 is tied for 6th place with 1931-1932 with 50 40 degree days. EVERY winter above this winter on this list is from the 1800s! Of the ten winters listed on that "Chicago: 40 Degree Days" graphic, only THREE have occurred within the past 65 years. B)
I know the "official" recording station (currently at O'Hare Airport) has been moved at least once in the past century, but that's no excuse. Let's face facts here: winters like this past one (without prolonged Arctic cold) are nothing new!
