What if the first 2 versions of the IS had the same graphics as the Weatherscan IS (2003-2005)? Probably something like this...

My first attempt to make TWC's 1996 - 2005 logo. It's not the best, but I think it's good.

Not bad... we just have to figure out what the font is supposed to be and you're golden  B)

I couldn't decide between 1 or 2, but 2 does give it more of a 4000 look. Below is a revised version with the 4000 font, Shadow has been added, changed to sizes of title bars slightly, templates widen on the sides, twc logo is smaller, also includes a ldl bar that is under construction.

My IntelliStar HD during the daytime.

Excellent!!!!

However, it's not in 16:9 (widescreen/HD) ratio. I can tell you are making these in PowerPoint (not that it's a bad thing, some cool things can be done with PowerPoint), and if you're using 2007 just go to Design > Page Setup > First dropdown > change to 16:9.

Then you'll have widescreen capabilities. Hope this helps!

Starting this September, I'm hanging up the towel on making XL v1 emulations and focusing on v2, so I'm been doing rough drafts of radars for it, it needs a lot of improvement to pass as the real thing, but I think I'm off to a good start. I also whipped up a rough draft version of the original XL radar. :)

I'd change the color of that blue box, it doesn't blend in well with the background. Maybe a darker blue or something. The background would be a nice morning background. I always wished for a nighttime version since v.2 came out in 2007.

Coming Soon.....

I told myself I wasn't going to emulate this version of the IntelliStar for obvious reasons and since it's the newest version, but since this version has undergone changes minor and major over the past 2 1/2 years, I thought it would be ok to do the original version that debuted back in October 2007.

This might be the sig I'm gonna use if TWC goes into Storm Alert Mode this Hurricane season. Simple and not over the top.

WeatherSTAR JR Emulation - Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 Project  UPDATE - M FLAVOR

I chose to use Mattoon, IL where my fellow Youtuber friend claytonleffler lives since he's dealing with excessive heat and soon severe thunderstorms while I was putting this together. All weather data was accurate at the time this was made. The Travel Cities Forecast is a work in progress, but I threw it in so you could get an idea of where I am with it right now.

Updates:
Font size shrunk from 32pt to 30pt.
Accurate data
Other segments completed (except Travel Cities Forecast)

Here's my segment of "What If...?"

What if Weatherscan was released in HD? Here's my idea of how it would look. (I did get some inspiration for the color schemes from the HD IntelliStar)

Credit goes to Donovan for the titlebar, I just added a little glow to the white part of it.

Thanks!  :)

Now that we know what the HD IntelliStar looks like, I decided to revamp my version of it. I like it, but I think the L Bar really clutters the screen and isn't needed, that's why my version doesn't have one because I think "Simpler Is Better."  But I am having a dilemma, I'm not sure which titlebar works better and if it should be faded or not.  :dunno:

This month will mark the IntelliStar's 3rd anniversary of the graphic background that debuted in October 2007, so I thought isn't it about time for a makeover? I kinda stayed with the basics of how it looks now, except the background is more blue and I added my custom made LDL to it as a bonus. Thanks to both of you for the positive feedback, If there's anything that you dislike or think needs improvements don't hesitate to say so.  ;)

I worked on modifying some minors things like the sun in the far top right of the background, you can only see blurred sun rays now. I did this because I think the brightness of the sun would have been too distracting. I also included some pictures of the warning crawls I made.

Thanks, I shrunk the fonts a tad, so I don't think that will a problem anymore.

Made in After Effects, a few slides are not completely transitioned over such as day planner, outdoor forecast, metro maps, etc.

11pm Update - I made some more modifications to this emulation, the templates are not as transparent and I added a touch of more blue again to the gradient backgound. Also below is a rough draft of my weather bulletin page.

Picking up with an AE project I haven't updated since June this year, It's my WeatherStar Junior Emulation! In this update, I added shadowing to the text, it's also on the test for the date and weather info on the LDL but for some reason it's not showing up as well as the other text so I'll have to do that over again I guess. Also only the Current Conditions screen has been done with the shadowing because sometime over the summer I lost my original AE file of the JR on my flashdrive so I have to do this over from scratch. To see it in action you have to download the video attachment below (Don't worry it's only 632 KB big or 15 secs.)

SIDE NOTE: I'm still trying to figure out how to do a time ticker, so that's why the time is missing and will be missing in the next update.

The following segments will be completed with the shadowing tomorrow:
Local Forecast (36 Hour)
Extended Forecast (3 Day)
Travel Cities Forecast

I posted one with 80% and 100% transparency. I also changed the gradient colors direction with the blues starting from the left, the purple in the middle and the oranges moving to the right. You might can even see the waves of one color transitioning to another.

November Update
I used the XL background for the banner and made it darker and added a bevel shape to it. I also added shadowing along with the other blue templates where slightly more transparency was also added since I last worked on this AE project in August. Shadowing still needs to be added to text and also the interstate map for the radar will be tweaked.

EDIT: Due to copyright infringement with WMG, I had to reupload this video with a different song, it's been replaced with "The Gift" by 3rd Force which played in the November 2000 playlist during the prime years of this version of the XL.

I believe so, if your security settings are saying the download is spam, I wouldn't recommend downloading it. I didn't have that problem when I was download the set.

I settled on a final design and this is what I came up with.

There is no animation in this demo video as well as valid information. A couple of screens are not completed or haven't been created yet such as the Air Quality and Almanac screens. Also I used the XL icons for this demo video, I haven't decided between them or the IntelliStar icons yet. In a desperate attempt, I put a transparent gradient blue bar at the bottom of the metro map used so I could cover up TWC logo at the bottom right (well at least I tried.) :P

Special Credit and Thanks to Zach who made the regional map used in the video.  :twothumbs:

Song - Ryan Farish - Atlantica (I purposely chose this song because it fits perfectly with the graphics imo.)

Custom Made IntelliStar2 Emulation - Storm Alert Concept Thoughts? (I got the idea for the Bottom line bulletin from one of Daniel's (MrDaniel789) Satellite Local Forecast videos during Hurricane Rita, I had no idea they used that along with the projected path and satellite loop during Storm Alert. Also I tried not to use so much red, gray and black, but those are the only colors that worked well together.)

Another boring Sunday evening brings more random artwork from me. :bleh: I honestly don't know why the heck I made this, but I do know I didn't give this the proper justice it deserves because the real thing is 100x better, but I'm hoping you guys will give me honorable mention for trying. :P Also I used the old WC logo because I thought it looked better with the design.

Ok, I think I've decided on an icon set to use for now on with my custom made IS2 emulation, I don't care that much about them aside from the snow/sun icons, but they seem to fit perfectly for me so I decided to use them over the XL icons. Let me know what you think. Special thanks to Zach for finding these icons.  Also I added a product I've been working on I simply titled as "Hour by Hour" and updated the week ahead with orange and blue gradient bars to indicate highs and lows and also to add a little pizazz.

Since my old computer kicked the bucket on me last month, I never got the chance to back up the file I used to make my IS2 self emulation, so once again I'm starting from scratch, but I'm going to be taking it step by step like before. I kept the basic design of the template, but since the real IS2 doesn't have a weather background, I went with a dark background. These are some concepts I came up with. This was a design that's always has been in my mind, but I couldn't figure out how to put it together until tonight.

BLIZZARD WATCH - CHICAGO, IL PART ONE (CALM BEFORE THE BLIZZARD)

WeatherSTAR3000 Emulation - STORM SYNOPSIS: Chicago, IL is in the bullseye of a very powerful potent winterstorm expected to bring everything except the kitchen sink from blizzard conditions, to crippling ice, to severe thunderstorms/possible tornadoes, to even flooding. This storm is projected to affect 1/3 (100 million) Americans in some form or shape of fashion the next 72 hours. Chicago via NWS is projected to accumulate 12 -18 inches of snow (24 inches locally) during the duration of this blizzard. Snowfall rates of over 3 inches per hour is also possible. I know the text isn't aligned correctly in this emulation, I haven't worked on it since December 2009. I'll work to fix that at a later date. If time permits for me this week, I'll also do a 3000 emulation on the conditions in Indianapolis, IN and Detroit, MI.

Song - Ralph Diekemper - "Song for Lee" I think this fit perfectly with the Winter background in this emulation so that's why I chose this song, plus it's my favorite from the January '11 overnight list.

A Local Forecast System for DirecTV and Dish Network on TWC HD (Works in the same way as the SD DirecTV LF does now) only difference is it would be enough forecast products for it to run through the entire LF instead of cutting back to the HD Satellite LF.

That black dot thingy (I don't know what it's really called) above the title bar was made by Donovan, the titlebar I made from scratch along with everything else. The picture of the Atlanta city skyline I got from Google Images.

HD Local Forecast Concept Design Completed! - June 2011 Update
I made several changes, can you spot them?   :whistling:

TOP STORY HEADLINE: HEAT, HEAT, GO AWAY, COME AGAIN SOME OTHER DAY!
If this relentless heatwave is any indication of what this summer will be, I'm gonna have to resort to doing a rain dance in my front yard err...scratch that, the backyard. I don't want to draw too much attention from folks thinking I've lost my mind.  :P

Song - Bradley Joseph - Friday's Child (I changed the pitch in Audacity, that's why it sounds different.)
Flavor - KLM (A hybrid of the XL's K Flavor essential lineup (minus maps) extended to 2 minutes like the LM flavor)
-Current Conditions
-Weather Bulletin
-Local Observations
-Radar
-Air Quality
-Text Local Forecast
-The Week Ahead

* Each segment lasts a duration of 12 seconds.

WeatherSTAR XL version 1 Emulation with Mock XL LDL!

A completed K Flavor of the XL version one

Includes a LDL during the local forecast
Working Clock Ticker
Allen Jackson narration (CC screen only, I don't have the phrases for "Your Forecast" or "Your Extended Forecast")
Animated radar (courtesy of wbtv.com)
County borders, city markers, and interstate lines were made by me.
Animated XL icons made by Robert
All weather data was provided by The National Weather Service.

NOTE - THE XL LDL IS NOT COMPLETED, IT'S JUST A TEST RUN (No clock ticker was added, this will be added next time)

And last, but not least, the music featured in this local forecast emulation is by none other than the lovely and wonderfully talented Joyce Cooling called "China Basin" which was featured on the June 2000 playlist which is the reason I picked it since it played during the XL era. :sing:

This project was made in Adobe Premiere Pro 8.0 and edited in Windows Live Movie Maker (Windows 7) :D

Severe Thunderstorm Watch #478

Severe Thunderstorm Watch #478 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ouOOiEHNcc#)

NOTICE - You might have to turn your volume down from the warning tone at the beginning.

FINALLY, Some Heat Relief!

What an amazing weather day yesterday! It started off very HOT and dry, but as we got closer to the peak of the afternoon heat, dewpoints and humidity gradually began to rise and in result, supercell thunderstorms began firing off to our WNW in Northern Alabama and Tennessee. Eventually, the supercells formed into a line of strong thunderstorms as they slowly moved ENE in West Georgia then shifting ESE towards the Atlanta area right after 7pm.

But the excitement didn't end there, much to my surprise, more thunderstorms began developing and training behind eachother in waves coming from the NW in Tennessee. There were four rounds of strong thunderstorms during the evening not calming down until after 1am. This caused a Flash Flood Warning to be issued in NE Atlanta for Crooked Creek and the North Fork of Peachtree Creek.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch was also extended 3 additional hours to account for the redeveloping storms around the time of the original expiration date.

Notice the wide range in temperatures from the upper 60's in Gainesville and Athens to the upper 90's in Anniston, AL!

IntelliSTAR v2 Emulation - Premiere Elements 8.0 Project
TOP STORY: The Sunshine State or The Smokey Oppressive Heat Killing State?

IntelliSTAR v2 Emulation - Premiere Elements 8.0 Project (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp6JDfo3XSQ#)

This is based off of the second graphical version of the IntelliStar (my favorite version) which debuted in August 2005 (TWC's relaunch) and was upgraded once again graphically in October 2007.

Song - Doug Markley - The Wind In Her Hair
Beta Testing City - Jacksonville, FL (I chose Jacksonville because of the very interesting weather taking place there this morning and throughout the afternoon: SMOKEY CONDITIONS, also they are under a Dense Smoke Advisory o_O I never knew such a thing existed.

Local Forecast Flavor - DE (1 minute)

ALL WEATHER DATA WAS ACCURATE AS OF 9:28 AM (CURRENT CONDITIONS) AND 11:28AM (LOCAL FORECAST).

Thanks, right now I'm torn between 3 color schemes: Blue, Blue/Purple, and Blue/Orange.

Anyway, here's a video of those themes.

You could always use all three themes and have them be for different times of the day. For example, WC in the evening could be blue/orange, WC at night could be just blue, and WC after midnight could be blue/purple.

Good job on the video!

IntelliStar - Graphical Makeover (It seriously needs one)

THIS IS A RESPONSE TO ANOTHER CONCEPT I DID BACK IN APRIL ON THE SAME STAR.

I was trying to make the titlebar that's currently used on air, I don't think it's bad for a first try. ;) Also the LDL is a temporary fill in until I make the SD LDL that's used during on air programming.

IS2 Concept - Metro Map Updated

I don't know about anyone else, but even with these new IS icons, I still get confused which is being used for certain conditions, so to fix that I thought it would be good if the condition observed was also shown in text form.

I also included a "Hour by Hour" Forecast Segment that's under construction.

If Hurricane Season 2011 ends up being as active as 2008 (As far as US landfalls is concerned) I'll be making a montage video that will recap this season (see post #266 for the revamped 2008 version I made). The graphics and color scheme will look like one of the following, similar to the graphics in my final draft of my feature presentation video. I think I might go with the latter than the former on the color scheme, but the blue, red, and black was inspired by the 2008 graphics used during Storm Alert and I like that also.

Of course, I can't take credit for the banner as that was made by Donovan. I think it works really well with the graphics.

I'll make sure to correct that, I did some resizing of the template so the information for each city is placed evenly and moved it down some I just haven't done that to the text and icons yet. In the before picture I edited in that post the bars were not even in size (If you look closely in that before picture the bottom two were not aligned with the top two and also the lines were too light.

A random idea I had the other day, What if the Local on the 8s was in English and Spanish?

Weather data is accurate, except the radar and I forgot to change "Cloudy" on the LDL to "Nublado" in Spanish.

I'm not fluent in Spanish so I did cheat by using a translator, so I can't vouch for everything being exactly accurate translated.

I like the titlebar, though Im not sure about the rest... it would look better if you moved the info from the bottom up to the center of the image, because that looks like a lot of wasted space and if it were actually on TV, the viewer wouldn't like looking at the bottom just to see the forecast.

This is what I guess you could call an HD Local Forecast concept (It could work for SD also) The design is loosely based off of KDKA-TV's weather forecast graphics. I say "loosely" because the color schemes are not all exactly the way they are in the video I watched, I tweaked them around to make it slightly different.  :)

L3rds based off of WRAL-TV's L3rds.

Sorry about the pictures not being that good, I just googled Heather Tesch and these were the best ones I could find. Also I think I should have shrunk the font on weather.com, but that's ok, it's just a rough draft.

Revisions - L3rds by color theme
Burnt Orange or Red; can be used for severe weather events as well - Early Mornings (First Outlook/Your Weather Today/Weekend View)
Yellow/Orange - Late Mornings/Afternoons (Day Planner/Weekend Now)

Rough Drafts of Various Forecast Products for My LF Concept (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08CJ2fpbZ6s#ws)

NOTE: With this being considered a test video, I didn't bother to update any information in this video, the exception being the Dense Fog Advisory which was issued just before I rendered this video so that forecast product was very last minute.

Changes I made since the Pittsburgh, PA LF video I did of the same design (see video response for that video if you want to compare differences.)

- Removed some of the transparency from the middle part of the background so it shows up as a darker blue.

-Changed the city backdrop from Pittsburgh to Atlanta (pretty obvious change)

- LDL changed from white to light blue. In consequence, the font color for the ad crawl also changed from black to white. (This design of the LDL is experimental and is subject to change)

- the text "weather.com" added to the titlebar next to TWC's logo on some forecast products.

-New Forecast Products
Weather Bulletin (Rough Draft; city backdrop may be changed to a backdrop of a thunderstorm or some form of severe weather.)

Metro Conditions

Regional Conditions (This might change to "Southeast Observations or Conditions")

Radars (Under construction)

Air Quality (Subject to change to Health and Garden or Lifestyles Report)

Airport Delays (Subject to change to Airport Conditions)

DirecTV LF App Concept (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6KjuLn9As8#ws)

Graphically, this will look familiar because it's essentially started from the most recent LF design concept I've worked on, but I made some significant tweaks and I believe this could go for a new generation of the LF app DirecTV subscribers get to see. I still like the idea of using a city backdrop rather than some boring generic background, so that's why I kept that in. I forgot to include the radar so that's why it's not there.

*The only forecast products updated is the Right Now Screen (First one) and the 7 Day Forecast.

Also I threw in some animation, but I'm not sure if the real LF app on DirecTV can handle something like that or not.

I didn't think it could, but I wasn't sure and like I said about the ad crawl, it's just there for this video. I don't have any intentions of keeping it on there.

This is the final design of this concept, I also removed all animation.

Some other small changes
- I removed the time off of the orange/blue tab, leaving just the temp there.
- Changed the blue shapes on the "Right Now" screens from rectangles to modified parallelograms.
- Added the radar which I forgot to add in last time.

All info was accurate and valid as of February 15, 2012 7:58pm EDT.

4000 Satellite Local Forecast Circa 1995 (Custom Made Flavor Lineup)

Song: Kenny G - All In One Night
This song was featured on the November 1995 Playlist
Source: twcclassics.com

I haven't seen many SLFs from the 4000 era here on YT with a distinct flavor lineup so I made up my own and since I haven't gotten around to completing the gray regional maps for the MidAtlantic, Midwest, Northwest, Southwest, or Southern Plains I threw in a National map that I made to make up for it.

This is also the only project that has managed to last up to a year that I have ever worked on in the past 4 years. I originally started on this in March 2011.

New Products Since March 2011
National Radar Map
Tornado/Severe T'Storm Watch Map
National Forecast Map (I hope this map isn't too hard to read, I used the same cities used on the national maps on weather.com, the only one missing is Washington, DC which is purposely missing since it's used as one of the extended forecast cities.)

Graphical Overhaul (4000 version 2 Concept) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1M9Jv2bIys#)

It never fails that I start off with one concept or idea and suddenly it goes into a whole new direction. That's exactly what happened here from my previous video.

This flavor lineup is based off of the real 4000's L Flavor (November 1992 - April 1995)
Source: http://classic.twcclassics.com/information/flavors/weatherstar-4000-1992.html (http://classic.twcclassics.com/information/flavors/weatherstar-4000-1992.html)

Thank you. Using these icons were literally my last resort, anything from the 4000 to the two IS icon sets looked awful. Even looking around online, commercial icon sets that were ok for free use were too cartoonish for a project like this, so I really had no choice but to use the weather.com icons since they looked the most realistic if used in HD.

I really just wish that is what TWC did to the SLF instead of just upgrading it to Viz. I miss WPS :(

Me too, it's a shame they cut corners and chose to make a copycat of the HD LF.

Meh, didn't come out the way I envisioned in my head, but it's close enough I suppose. :itsok: Then again I'm very critical of my work. Anyway, this is just one of those "what if" scenarios about how the SD IntelliSTAR might look if graphically upgraded to match it's HD counterpart. Just a thought, like I said it didn't come out exactly the way I was thinking in my head, but it works. I'm not sure how the LDL would look if they chose to redo that over too.

No problem Donovan, I have to give you credit again, but for a different titlebar of yours you made that I'm using for my SmartCast STAR Project. These are some changes I made since 2 months ago in April. :)

Didn't take very long to make these changes, most of the work went into the background, LDL, and modifying the titlebar some. The major change is the Right Now screen. I'm not sure if I'm gonna keep icons on that page or not.

Deciding between using a sky background or not.

SmartCast STAR Final Design Draft 1 of 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftTVV5MdxFM#)

Quote
*I recommend watching this video in 720p Quality*

Revised the LDL to look similar to the Satellite LDL that is actually used on TWC.

I also revised the Right Now page because in retrospect, I think the wild bright colors of the background were a bit too much, along with the template looking a little too cluttered so I moved the animated weather background behind the template fading in. NOTE: The animated background would only appear if precip was being reported, I used "Snow/Wind" as an example of how that would work. If the sky observation was anything outside of rain/snow/sleet/freezing rain/thunderstorms the generic still sky background would be shown on the Right Now page just as it's shown on the other pages.

Some other little changes
Mixing in Arial fonts along with Helvetica and Grotesk fonts.

SmartCast STAR Final Design Draft 2 of 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02pchILsQsg#)

Quote
*I recommend watching this video in 720p Quality*

This version is just a generic gradient blue background, it would have no still sky image or animated weather in the background. A video response will be posted below if you want to compare the differences from the first final draft.

Haven't done one of these in 6 months...

Features music from my favorite song from the August/September 2006 playlist, "16th and Mission" by Glenn McNaulty.

Slight modifications
- The bar where TWC logo is used to be orange, now it's dark blue.
- The outline around the blue template was thicken half a point.
-I removed the light blue pillars used for the forecast for Sat/Sun
- The backdrop of course is of Downtown San Francisco

I tweaked the colors of the background along with the blue template.
Introduced an incomplete rough draft of the TCF.
Added an ad crawl as a test.
The radar blinking the way it did was a result of something on intellicast.com's end with the .gif radar file.
TWC logos were made by number1TWCfan.

Are these maps scaled down too small for 4:3 aspect ratio? Trying to decide if it's better left as it is or in full screen. I personally like it the way it is now, but if this was real I wouldn't want anyone squinting their eyes trying to read the weather data which is why I'm bringing up this question.

My very first attempt at recreating this version of the 4000. I'm not sure why it's taken me this long to attempt this.

The background, template, LDL, and the blueish-purplish top bar were color edited in Photoshop.

I need some help, I'm trying to decide which layout works best for this LF concept. There are two of them. This concept started off being based off of Accuweather's website design and somehow down the road it morphed into this.

B. Layout Two - Boxed 4 City Obs, Time Displayed on White Titlebar

Cleaned up a LOT of the animations and revised/added new animations. Also added more narration w/ a completed radar (first rough draft)

-Animations changed to a Foggy text effect on the white titlebars
-Animations on the white titlebars changed to a Slide Swoop
-Added outer glow to the text on the CO page
-Redid the Lens Flare effect and reduced the brightness some the previous video.
-Added a Bullet Train effect to the text on the Weather Bulletin/Local Forecast Screens

-I hope the animation effects on the radar screen isn't overkill. Sometimes I get a little carried away when experimenting. :blushing:

This isn't TWC related, it's actually school related, but I thought I would share it here instead of in the FP.

This is how my final project for my Vector Graphics Class came out. We had to redesign the front cover/DVD disk of any existing movie (or video game) we wanted. I've always been a big Scooby Doo fan so I chose one of the two movies of theirs I used to own/watch as a little kid called "Scooby Doo on Zombie Island" (1998)

Original Movie Cover

Scooby Doo on Zombie Island DVD Disk
(http://i.imgur.com/VC03MGm.png)

I didn't get to put as much detail into the background as I had envisioned during the sketch drawing stage, but overall I'm still satisfied with how it came out in the end.

Oh, and I also got an A+ on this Final Project which makes my final overall grade for this class an A+ (95%)

I've complained and ranted (maybe too much I'll admit) about how all of TWC's graphics carry no uniformity in all their shows so I decided to do it myself using Photoshop. It's not perfect, especially the masking I did on the images of the OCMs. I had a hard time finding more higher quality photos so these were the best I could find. :(

I designed this as more of an ad for TV/Web, but it can work as a show opener also if TWC's logo and the timeslot info isn't on the banner. I'll post an alternate version later on.

This isn't perfect, but I took this image of the XL v2 background and removed TWC logo and the line where the banner/titleheader would be so I could use it for an IntelliStar emulation w/o having to crop the image (which is the way I did it in the past) I used the Clone Stamp tool in Photoshop.

I did something I've been very daunted and nervous about doing because I could never get it right for years which frustrated me. However, I tried it again in Photoshop today and the results came out much better than I expected.

Tools I Used
-Paintbrush (draw the state outlines; also to color the ocean from scratch)
-Eyedropper Tool
-Smudge Tool (Blend in some of the pixel areas from low resolution)
-Duplicated the states part of the map (one is blurred; 50% opacity, the other left as is)
-Added Contrast (maxed out at -150%) and slight brightness (2%)
-Sharpened the black state outlines
-Multiple Layers!

and I think that's it, listing everything from memory.

Take a look...(attachments below)

I tried to incorporate my own spin of some of the design layout of the IntelliSTAR/IntelliSTAR II, yet keeping the majority of the layout similar to the first version of my SmartCast STAR from 2012.

Below are my rough drafts. Surprisingly it was a lot easier to put together than I thought. :D

Credit: Radar image (FFC radar site), interstate lines/markers, state/county outlines were provided by noaa.gov only for the sole purpose of showing off the radar. I plan on drawing up everything in Adobe Illustrator (except the radar of course)

NOTE: This is my first rough draft, so I'm still tweaking around, that also includes the radar banner. I updated the legend to the 8 color code, what's left is to redesign (and recolor) the banner.

I had swore to myself I was never going to attempt to recreate this particular legacy STAR. Yet, here I am attempting to make it in After Effects.

All weather data (including the warning crawl) was accurate at the time the image attached below was captured.

A few more things need to be added, such as the flashy effects/transitions for the titleheader/templates, as well as metro maps/daypart forecast, but overall this came out better than expected.

I've done a few different spins on how the IntelliSTAR2 should look since the version 2 update last November, but for this one I thought about that Vimeo video that was posted here last year of the mock up Weather All The Time concept and how (in my opinion)The Weather Channel threw away a major opportunity to set the IS2 apart from it's predecessor the IS graphically.

I'll be the first to admit that while I did love the simplicity back then, I realized that too simple can be a bad thing as well as being too flashy. I'm hoping with this concept I was able to strike a good balance between the two, but I'll let those who watch the video decide. I was somewhat disappointed that while the overall design remained similar to the mock up videos, they didn't choose to keep that personalized feel of the cities/landmarks like they did in the mock up videos as well. When the IntelliStar2 v1 first came out over 4 years ago, what made it appealing was how vastly different graphically it looked in comparison to the IntelliStar. It had flair, flashiness and vibrance.

I don't know why, but for years I always wanted to see a future STAR display weather conditions in the background, in addition to actual cities and landmarks where you live as part of the background. I always thought that would be cool to see and (again in my opinion) would add a level of depth and uniqueness to that particular STAR which is exactly what I did in the video below.

I made a few modifications mainly to the fonts/alignment and layout of the weather data.

These are two different versions:

The first version is for metropolitan areas such as Chicago that used as an example. The Chicago skyline is blurred in the BG w/ the raindrops/rain/lightning overlayed on top. If the weather observation was precipitation-free the Chicago skyline wouldn't be blurred.

The second version is for rural areas where you get a generic cloud BG w/ the weather elements overlayed on top.

Another idea I had was to have the text written weather observation be similar to the actual narration. The Chicago image is a good example of this where it reads, "Thunderstorms in the area". The first line is for the weather observation (rain, sleet, snow, etc.) and the second line (if needed) is for the phrase (in the area, in the vicinity, nearby, skies, etc.)

Fonts Used: Helvetica

It's no secret that my favorite legacy STAR is the 4000 and always will be so my goal is overtime to recreate every graphical era (including all text based) from 1990-Present. Over the past 18 months, I've already recreated the 1992-1995 and 2002-Present era. Starting in October I'm focusing on the 1990-1992 era.

NOTE: I used an actual screenshot from twcclassics.com to size and scale everything as accurately as possible.

I created/animated it in After Effects. The only thing I can't take credit for animating is the XL icons that were mixed in there. I only used them since the still weather icons I used were limited (I got them from here btw. http://www.iconarchive.com/show/weather-icons-by-jaan-jaak.html (http://www.iconarchive.com/show/weather-icons-by-jaan-jaak.html))

Actually, my TWC Fan art has been strictly After Effects and PowerPoint Free since May 2013 and I have never looked back. I only wished I had made the full transition back 4 years ago when I first started messing around with AE.

Here's a test run of the WeatherSTAR4000 circa 1990 when it was updated graphically to the Orange/Blue color scheme we know and love, but was still mostly text based. Still working on that fading dissolve effect.

All the weather data is fake and invalid except the local forecast/extended forecast. The weather data is there as placeholders. The time and date is also invalid.

This is something I have always wanted to do, but haven't until now. It's been just over 6 years (June 2008) since I've making STAR Emulations. Year after year, I've learned from my earlier mistakes, and improved technically and graphically overtime.

The video below highlights a WeatherSTAR4000 Emulation I made back in November 2008. Some of you who have known me here for a while may recognize it. Halfway through the video is the same 4000 emulation re-created in After Effects this week. The differences are very stark and drastic! Redoing this in After Effects allowed me to do some things graphically that I was not capable of doing in Powerpoint such as the TCF for example.

Just like the video yesterday, there's a lot of graphical revisions/corrections that have been made, honestly too many to name right off the top of my head. However, a few changes include a black outer glow around TWC's logo and the text "weather.com", a daypart forecast completed as well as The Week Ahead. The radar has been slightly tweaked (includes a 2 second pause before re-looping). I don't know the technical term for this, but i call it the gradient "L" line where the title header is, well that's been tweaked as well. The main thing I haven't fleshed out yet is the blue flash effect where the blue templates transition in/out.

The song is "Birdland" by Weather Report, one of my all-time favorite songs to be featured on TWC back in the early 2000's.

As a sidenote: Check out the rainy pattern were in for the next 7 days. Is this Atlanta or Seattle?

My first attempt at Regional/Metro Maps (WSXL v2)

Regional Map
(http://i.imgur.com/GeQieqF.png)

The metro map isn't as great as I would have liked, but I did the best I could do with what I had. (which was very little and limited) I redrew the interstate lines with the pen tool in AE and the map itself is the FFC (Peachtree City, GA) radar map from noaa.gov which I heavily modified to make it look more greenish. I also had to leave Marietta off the metro map because it would have been blocked by the banner/TWC logo.

Yes I did, I forgot to mention that in my post. I really like wunderground's website logo and I thought it would be cool if TWC had something similar. My logo mocks will never come to fruition, but then again who knows, from my understanding TWC/Wunderground still have a partnership with eachother.

Emulated and Modified IntelliStar2 (Work in Progress)

! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZXirqOkHxE#)

New Things the Real IntelliStar2 Doesn't Have, but This One Does:

- An LDL

- A background that evolves according to the current conditions being reported. In this video, the desert background rapidly changes to show a developing thunderstorm in progress. (This feature will also appear for the local forecast screens) The background goes back to normal once the local forecast transitions to the next product after the "Now" screen which in this test video is the radar.

- Sound Effects (This feature will also appear for the local forecast screens)

- A radar that zooms in real time as it transitions from a regional view to a local view.

Things the Real IntelliStar2 Has, but This One Does Not:

- A Progress Timeline

- A Welcome Screen (I feel it's unnecessary, plus I forgot to add it anyway lol)

- The Weather Channel's logo no longer appears at the top left, but rather the bottom left with the LDL.

Thanks, I had that demo reel that was posted on vimeo.com (https://vimeo.com/79218581 (https://vimeo.com/79218581)) in mind for that. I remember when I saw it a few months before the relaunch posted here how excited I was about how the new IntelliStar/IntelliStar2 could potentially look like. The animated BGs and weather effects are what I thought made them look so cool and unique. I was very disappointed to see TWC didn't keep that element of the demo concept for the final product.

My first successful attempt at the XLv3 in after effects (still a work in progress as evidenced in the video). I used Denver as the test city because of Winter Storm Ajax. The song used is one of my favorites from the November/December 2009 playlist called, "Peace Waltz" by Lenny Marcus, the song certainly has a wintry feel to it.

I don't get to create/post STAR emulations as much as I would like to, but I would like to try to do something a little different from now on. I'm going to share some base maps/templates for various STARs that can be used to help out those who may want to create and emulate on their own accord. I'll start off simple, I didn't create these maps, I downloaded them several years ago from a TWC directory or archive website I think. They also had to be cropped to remove the banners/TWC logo. These maps can be used as regional maps for the IntelliSTAR or even the WeatherSTAR XL v3 (2005-2014). Feel free to use these materials as you wish.

I'll post some templates for legacy STARs later.

Ha! I remember those base maps from I think Martin's web server several years ago. They were taken down right when I needed it a year ago and no one would budge to post it.  <_<  :D Any way toxictwister00 I can recreate high quality versions of those maps if you want me to. I have several pieces of DEM and GIS software and can easily recreate them. If you look at my art work topic I recently recreated the DBS forecast maps used from 2004-2011. All I would need to do is change the RGB values in my software.

Sure, go for it!

Btw, your artwork is phenomenal. Definitely some of the best I've seen in my 10 years on this forum community. I don't know if you are considering going into graphic design, but I would encourage you to do it, you have impressive skills. :)

What application will those templates work for?

Something as simple as Microsoft Powerpoint or more advanced as After Effects. I only use After Effects, but I would imagine any application that supports .png files will work just fine.

Here is a higher res re creation of the base maps toxictwister00 posted. They are 4000x1360 and is recommended for regional views only. Since this is GTOPO30 data it doesn't get any more clearer than that. SRTM data would be for local views but I have not downloaded this yet but plan to at a later time.

Please note, in order to preserve the quality, I couldn't import this into a GIS program as it would compress it and blur the image out, so the borders look horrible since I had to overlay it in Photoshop. With that said I have also included a borderless version and you can add your own borders however you wish. Let me know if you want more basemaps and I can consider re creating them.

Could you make the borders small for when you zoom it in?

Once in a decade bitterly cold temperatures with subzero wind chills on Christmas Eve 2022. First time we had single digit lows since January 2014.
