Title: The Weather Channel Reimagined
Post by: Darr'chelle on November 29, 2008, 05:44:56 PM
I have a bunch of modern concepts (XL-IS ish) - a complete package of TWC concepts and now some for WxScan.

The types:
Wave 1 concepts use a blue cloud background, ISv3 style titles, and have a PMX touch with the location name. Examples in Wave 1 use Middletown, Virginia and have file names beginning with TWC Concept.
Wave 2 features a different background, XLv1 style titles, and Charleston as the example city. Wave 2 also contains some WeatherScan designs using Frutiger. Wave 2 designs have just numbers or a number preceded by a W (for Weatherscan) for file names. "Current Conditions.png" is a concept for a 2-site STAR.
There are also other concepts featuring an updated 4000.

Resources used are original, from Martin's IS goodies (Record Temp items and Frutiger), from Robert, Michael, Tyler, and Al Lopez (modified XL icons), the Samurize forums and Stephen (XL icons), or the National Weather Service (weather advisories you see here were actually issued!). Very little of the weather data is real - if it is, it was obtained from weather.com or Weather Underground (almanac). The backgrounds were taken from large-format photos of clouds and then modified to look blurred.

One thing I noticed is that the Samurize forums called the XL icons the "Reference" package. There's no current TWC set, which is ironic enough considering some things TWC hasn't updated in years (the TWC Mac Dashboard widget and some web gadgets) still use the XL icons.

A look at some new icons, made by Robert and Michael:

-Partly Sunny (never used on the XL and rarely on air, but captured from a Weatherscan Local XL product guide)
-Partly Cloudy PM 2 (XLv2, XLv3, IS)
-Mostly Sunny

I'm sorry I never commented before, but these are awesome recreations. B)

And have I seen these on Youtube before?

Yeah, these are really nice Raymie! Great job!

Re: Chris: I do not even have a YouTube account. They're not recreations, but rather concepts. If I was controlling TWC, I'd throw them ten years back in certain ways - graphics, programming, etc. and cut off the air on the Junior and 4000. (It's about time to me - they haven't been updated substantially in years.)

OK. I'm sorry, Raymie, but you did a good job. :)

And I was just asking because I saw TWC Emulations very similar to the ones you made. ;)

A satellite forecast in the Wave 2 style, heralding the return of the Travel Cities Forecast!
...Any ideas for concepts? I'm actually having a case of Weather Star block.

Weatherscan, Weatherscan, Weatherscan! I spent last night on WxScan concepts...and here they are! I scoured the Weatherscan videos for segments!
W3, W4: Airport ConditionsW5: Outdoor Activity ForecastW6: Health Forecast (those bars took a heck of a time to make! I realized I needed a Gradient Overlay with transparent termini and then set the fill to 0)W7: Air QualityW8: UV IndexW9: Gardening ForecastW10: Tee Time ForecastW11: Golf Course Forecast (I could also do a more generic 5-day like the XL, but this is the IS-type)W12: Ski Conditions
Coming soon: the Spanish Forecast, an extremely rare WxScan package I remember from my Weatherscan unit; and anything else you want!

For all those icons...
...Michael gets my first custom LF!
Actual tabular and forecast data, and I used my own PM Showers icon (put a drop shadow on the PM).
Comes with Current Conditions, 36 Hour Forecast, and Extended Forecast.
There's something at every turn...just look at the LDL on the 36-Hour Forecast. (:))
Sadly, I did not have a situation suitable for one of your great icons in this LF...just a lot of rain in the next 36 hours and then smooth sailing (Trammell Starks?)

With the XL spirit in the air tonight and the cold settling into the Northeast, it's time for the snowbirds to come flying to California and Arizona - and if there's still an XL left, they might stumble into the funky Air Quality slide they have there.
Armed with a Weather Star XL product guide, I took the time out to create the almighty California Air Quality slide, 24-1 in the files.
This was "actual" data from the XL product guide.

We had an accident with the STAR and the only thing left was the PMX machine from Canada...
...by the way, if you want these puppies (there are 20 to 30 of these in 128x128 format), ask me. They're from the WeatherEye widget for the Mac. I've done a TWC widget modernization with the Show Package Contents like I did with the icons here too.
All TWN/MM copyrights acknowledged. These icons have been used since the winter of 2001.

We should make emulators with this design. It would be awesome. If so, I think NorthStar would be a very cool name for it.

You do know TWN routinely has changed up that video background? (the misalignment is actually done on purpose!)

A new FAQ for a weather.com product concept:

Q. What is MyCast™ by The Weather Channel®?
A. MyCast™ by The Weather Channel® is a new way of getting your current conditions from weather.com®. Like the Local on the 8s® on TV, MyCast™ by The Weather Channel® displays your weather information neatly and in various slides.

Q. How do I use MyCast™ by The Weather Channel®?
A. Using MyCast™ by The Weather Channel® is simple! Just go to your normal page with your Current Conditions and click on "MyCast".

Q. How is MyCast™ by The Weather Channel® laid out?
A. Once at the MyCast page, you'll see the MyCast display and "« Previous Page" and "Next Page »" links. Clicking on the links changes the slide displayed.

The slides are in this order:Q. What about severe weather?
A. MyCast™ by The Weather Channel® will display a triangular icon with an exclamation mark on it near the weather icon in the Current Conditions slide if a weather alert is active. Clicking on this icon will take you to an index of weather alerts, from which you can read the individual statements.

Q. Why did I design MyCast?
A. MyCast is intended to cut down on the clutter on those current conditions pages (you have to scroll down just to see the 36-Hour Forecast!). It also coordinates weather.com with TWC on TV and is the video forecast for rural areas.

Q. I have a suggestion for MyCast. How can I submit it?
A. If you have a MyCast concept, just PM or IM it to me and I will definitely take a look.

I know. I didn't intend it to be realistic but an example of my NEW ICONS.

QuickCast is the name...and 90% or so is done. I could release it in this state.
