Title: Michael's TWC Fan Art Portfolio
Post by: texasstooge on May 11, 2008, 12:47:34 AM
This is where I put most of the TWC Fan Art/emulations from now on...except for weather icons (see my seperate topic).
___________________________________________________________________________

Anyways, here's my attempt at the "Travel Troubles" segment, utilizing one of the Weather Underground photos, Billy's LDL Warning Bar and Tyler's modified "Strong T-Storm" Icon.

Let me know what you think.

A local TV station in Dallas/Fort Worth had the idea of using weather icons that show "Warning" or "Watch" on them on the right top of the screen. Unfortunately it didn't work so well due to the fact that the affected counties are only scrolled on the bottom of the screen at 30 minute intervals. But why not resurrect them...my way? After gaining access to the entire NWS Icons set (http://www.erh.noaa.gov/forecast/images), I've decided to resurrect that idea of having icons that have "Warning", "Watch", or "Advisory" on them with the counties listed on the side.

Another idea that popped in my head is that what if we have the current TWC logo change to the said icons and back to the logo every 5 seconds when an alert is in effect for your area? That's gonna come in my art portfolio in a few days.

DISCLAMER: All icons are original property of The National Weather Service. However, some of the modified icons are property of its creator Michael Raymond. They can be used freely, however, it is asked that you do not redistribute them. Thanks for your cooperation.

I'll start off with the Warnings and Watches.

For the past 2 months, I've created my attempt of the TWC L-Bar on Microsoft PowerPoint. And it seems that one attempt leads to another idea that popped in my head.

What if one main TV station in each market area carry the TWC L-Bar? Although KTVT CBS 11 is in partnership with TWC, I just thought I'd make it so that WFAA ABC 8 and TWC teamed up.

Summary: Both versions show the "ABC World News Now" and the current "TWC" logos, and run the same conditions, forecasts, and traffic reports, except Version 2's uses the current icons and they don't have the fading transition (on purpose). To those who have Microsoft PowerPoint, click on and of the following links:

 - Version 1 (http://rapidshare.com/files/121344884/L-Bar_-_ABC_WNN.ppsx)
 - Version 2 (http://rapidshare.com/files/121344885/L-Bar_-_ABC_WNN_V2.ppsx)

Any comments and suggestions are welcome.

Last summer, an idea just popped in my head: What if all Colleges/Universities show the Satellite TWC and carry all IntelliStars modified to show the Blackbar for colleges in cities within the district?

The Dallas County Community College District serves Addison, Carrollton, Dallas, Farmers Branch, Garland, Irving, Lancaster, Mesquite, and Richardson. The Blackbars also show Airport Delays and Sunset/Sunrise info.

All blackbar emulators run on PowerPoint, and the Blackbar is courtesy of Billy Miller.

This emulator simulates the 02/24/2007 Dust storm (This is my attempt at a warning scroll in the end)

This emulator simulates a random Summer Day in 2007.

Here's my take on the "Getaway Forecast". Now, I know it should be for distant cities within a 100 mile radius, but I thought I'd broaden it to include Chicago and Miami.

Additionally: Maroon 5 and The Hives--kind of an odd pairing for a 2007 tour (http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003608904) considering Maroon 5 plays Adult Alternative and The Hives play Punk Rock. Just yesterday as I was chatting with Victor, another idea popped in my head: What if the existing WeatherStar 4000 units finally have a BETA update to match the current look of The Weather Channel? Not like it's gonna happen in a million years, but I think it would be cool.

Utilizing the WeatherStar 4000 Fonts and Icons provided by TWC Classics (http://www.twcclassics.com), the Backgrounds provided by Microsoft PowerPoint, and the current TWC logo, here's a screenshot of what it looks like:

Please note of the changes other than what's shown on the screenshot:
 - The Almanac Templates have the Sunrise/Sunset background colors
 - The Regional Maps are Updated
 - The order is changed to follow suit to the WeatherStar XL and IntelliStar
 - The "Local Radar" map has the "Unavailable" sign until I can find the WS4000 map
 - The Icons are added on the bottom right corner of the "Local Forecast" box
 - The "Extended Forecast" boxes changed to a light blue/silver/lavender color
 - The text in the said "Extended forecast" section is changed to black.

 - All known material is owned by TWC
 - The fonts and icons are provided by TWC Classics
 - The Regional Basemaps are from Google Earth

Just today, I recently created what the satellite background should've looked like after the IntelliStar was revamped on October 23, 2007.

With that being said, here's my take on the Three-Day satellite forecast.

All known material is property of TWC. Some modified icons are courtesy of Tyler Tomasino, and the back ground and templates are courtesy of Martin.

Dang, I was totally going to do that exact same thing with my satellite LFs. :faint: Now everyone will think I copied you if I decide to post it publicly. :itsok:

Well, as long as you give credit to Martin for the fonts, templates/backgrounds, and me for putting that together, you'll be OK.

BTW, thanks for the WS4000 Radar map. Makes a nice edition to my WS4000 BETA concept.

Today, I did some tweaking on the WeatherStar 4000 BETA concept.

http://rapidshare.com/files/159227151/WeatherStar_4000_BETA.ppt.html

The only changes made are:

 - Time and Date flipped (correction)
 - Added WS4000 Radar Map (cropped to show the North Texas area)
 - The "Incomplete Data" box is lighter.

- All known material is owned by TWC
- The fonts and icons are provided by TWC Classics
- The WS4000 Radar map is provided by LFMusicFan
- The Regional Basemaps are from Google Earth

I did my final tweakings of the WS4000 BETA concept. The font on the "Current Conditions" slide is changed to "STAR 4 Extended" and I corrected the time/date placing error on the "Regional Conditions" map.

________________________________________________________________

And just for the pure fun of it, I decided to do a recreation of the WS4000 delay start in progress on PowerPoint. As we know when the WS4000 was still active in some areas, the WS4000 is kicked in progress after 40 to 50 seconds of showing the national forecast. My version of the Satellite feed utilizes the Satellite Background template I've recently created.

What follows is my attempt at the October 2007 revamp of the Satellite Feed banners as requested on TWC Classics. The last 3 almost looks the same as the previous set, but this uses the current radar banner on the IntelliStar.

3-Day Forecast:

Earlier, I've created the Current Conditions LDL using the 1998-2006 Freezing Fog icon (modified by Al), the old LDL (by Billy), and the Interstate font (provided by Martin). I never saw the "Freezing Fog" icon before, so I just went ahead and pasted it on my LDL creation.

An idea just popped into my head this week: A couple years ago, the OnSpot Digital Network is installed at all Simon Property-owned malls including the Irving Mall. All the time they were showing news, sports, TV clips, and advertisments; they never show weather and/or traffic. So I thought, "Why not add TWC HD to the mix?"

Here's my concept on TWC forecasts shown to mall goers (See attachments). The temperatures are color-cordinated to match the color legend (shown on National Forecast high & low maps).

We know many of us can customized our weather.com (http://weather.com) page, but what if we get to choose which icons set to use? This idea comes from the Weather Underground (http://www.wunderground.com/) website, where members get to customize their icons (http://www.wunderground.com/member/membersettings.html?page=icons) from there.

I've screencapped the weather.com website and made 3 different copies (the other 2 I cropped to buttons) and have blanked out the segment from the Navbar down. I then put 8 different versions of the "Partly Cloudy" icon and here's the end result:

On Thursday, a dryline has swept through the North Texas area, bringing in some dust from West Texas. Some smoke mingled in with the dust as wildfires break out from Bowie to Southwest of Weatherford. What if all cable headends that still have the WeatherStar 4000 & Jr. units are required to upgrade to an XL or an IntelliStar? This concept is inspired by the 2009 DTV transition.

On the 2nd piece of artwork, my idea for all the decomissioned WeatherStars including the 3000s, 4000s and Jr's is that they're reconfigured and sent back to all cable headends as an upgrade to the Emergency Alert System.

As mentioned in the Icons Discussion topic (https://twctodayforums.com/forums/index.php/topic,1176.0/msg,90691.html), I saw the "Windy" icon used for the first time on the Current Conditions section of weather.com (http://weather.com). Although my local IS only used the "Cloudy" icon in the CC slides and the "Cloudy and Windy" icon on the Metro Map, I figured: Why not show the "Windy" icon on the IntelliStar?

Man, this has been a month of changes!

Just today, KPMZ 96.7 FM in Flower Mound, TX has flipped from its "Platinum" Oldies format to a simulcast of WBAP News/Talk 820. With that in mind, I think a slight change in the radio station logo on TWC's ID page is in order. This is the HD version, too bad it's not a vid but it'll do.

An idea came to me last night: what if the "Local On the 8s" was further truncated (shortened) during long-form programming? I know what you wanna say... "DON'T TEMPT THEM!!!" Oh, I get you now! At least yours is actually legible! :P Hope TWC would never get the idea of making the LOT8s during long-form about the size of the alert scroll for the IS2. That's a scary thought...

OK, boredom has struck me. Back around 2 to 3 years ago, a friend of mine in Fort Worth I would occasionally visit used to live in an apartment complex served by Ygnition Cable (http://www.ygnition.com/) before moving last year. She told me that Ygnition re-transmits via Dish Network, so I didn't expect any "local" LOT8s on The Weather Channel. So an idea came to my head: if Ygnition was able to obtain the WS4000, what if their station idents at :57 past the hour clash with Dish Network's?

NOTE: I know Dish Network's IS doesn't carry a channel number in their ID, but I went ahead and added it anyway.

And just for the heck of it, on my alternate version, I did the same text using both the Interstate Bold-Condensed and the Star4000 Large fonts.

With all that's been going on at The Weather(less) Channel, logo ideas popped in my head. The first one involves cropping the current TWC logo MTV style...

...but then it would be stupid because the "W" would be shortened to an odd "V". So I went and created newer TWC Logos based on the Cartoon Network Idents. Note: Every other TWC logo has a "White" version of the bottom text.

For "Green Is Universal"/Earth Week:

And just for the heck of it, cropped them MTV-style.

Yeah, I do realize the green logo is cropped more than the blue one, but at this point, I don't care. :bleh:

It's been over 2 years since I've posted any TWC-related artwork as I've been exploring around Dallas/Fort Worth. Plus I was running out of ideas and I was on Facebook most of the time.

Anyways, as many of us know, Belo Corp. has been purchased by Gannett Company. Even before that transaction, The Weather Channel would've been better off under Belo's ownership. Not because it was based in Dallas (although it's true), but because the local news stations (like ABC-affiliate WFAA-TV) have the most respected personnel. Let's rewind to around 2006/2007 before TWC's "downfall".

Belo Corp. via the YouTube video below with the end tag starting at the 14 second mark (too bad I couldn't find a cleaner version of this eventhough I've set it at the highest quality possible). The Warning crawl was created by Billy.
