Title: Website Errors and Problems
Post by: TWCToday on June 18, 2009, 03:40:45 AM
Most of TWC Todays webpage is fully operational and functional.  Please post links to pages or content that does not work.

Resolved requests will be marked like this

I am just clicking through the site to see what is out of wack and here is what I found...

Music > Current Music Clips - This directs to a page with the old design.
It works at least. Good for now
Music > Classic Music Clips - No link, doesn't go anywhere.
Video > TWC HD - None of the videos on that page work.
Misc. > Link to us - Missing images
The emulator links go nowhere.

I'm not sure if the videos aren't on the site anymore, but the following LAT48s #2 videos are missing:

Derek, Alain, and Matt (ErnestoAlert)

The videos could not be located- Martin

They are missing on the site as well. Unless they have the files and give them to me, I will remove the names soon

A whole bunch of OCM pages are missing here. Pretty much everything after the first few are missing.

Not sure if this has been mentioned or if you know this, Martin, but the Current Music Clips and Classic Music Clips pages no longer function. When I click on one of them, I get an error like this:

Quote
https://twctodayforums.com/index.php /music.php twctodayforums.com 404 Wrong page.

EDIT: Also, just thought I would also mention that several links on various pages (such as the OCM's and Segment Openers) do not work. Hopefully these can be restored. :)

Just some errors I found scaning the site:

- "Classic Music Clips" is unclickable
- Under the reference guide, "FAQ's" and "Glossary of terms" have php errors
- Under misc. the "TWC today stream" has a php error
- If you click on "Current music clips" some of the links on the top and the left side have php errors, also if you click on the "miscellaneous" link at the top it will take you to a part of the site with an xl background with a lot of broken links.

Anyway, I noticed that I saw  at the end of quote on a post in the playlist discussion.

Okay, why hasn't the time on the site adjusted to Daylight Savings Time? It's getting sort of annoying.

Also, whatever happened to the amount of time logged in information that used to appear below your username at the top?

Also, whatever happened to the amount of time logged in information that used to appear below your username at the top?
Go to your profile summary, then choose "Look and Layout" under the "Modify Profile" drop-down menu.  Then, find the Time Offset section and click on the link called "auto-detect".  It'll change the number in the box to display how many hours to offset the forum time to correctly display your time.  Then, go all the way to the bottom-right corner of the page and select "Change Profile".  You have to do this every time we change our clocks due to Daylight Saving Time so that your profile settings correctly offset the forum time to your time.

The new upgrade for this forum moved the logged-in time information to your profile stats section.  You can find it by going to your profile summary and choosing "Show Stats" under the "Profile Info" drop-down menu.  You'll see it right away under "General Statistics".  Hope this all helps!

For the time, set it to -1, it takes 1 hour off the forum time (for east coasters only, west coasters like me had to set it to -3)

On the current and classic music clips...

For the letter P, when you want to select just one song, ALL of the songs select, and a random song plays that wasn't what you clicked on. --> This random song is actually the song for the letter O.

Also, for the 0-9, the "Warning...Fatal Error" message comes up.

I guess this is something we'll just have to get used to. Ever since the forums came back, I frequently get "Internet Explorer Cannot Display Webpage" errors when I try to click on a topic, but it goes away after I press back and try again.

Seems to be an issue with the host. I've been having issues too. Certain videos won't play all the way through. Likely an issue with memory and/or CPU usage. I imagine they're overpacking servers with their cheap prices and odd unconditional refund policy. I've also noticed that the people responding to my tech support questions are new. :hmm:

Not really an "error" or a "problem" but this does irk me.... The twitter mod, when you make a new topic, uses the username you signed up with, not the username you have now... For example: http://twitter.com/TWCToday/status/7322787244 (http://twitter.com/TWCToday/status/7322787244) it uses Mike's username he signed up with instead of "Mike M"... Any way you could possibly fix that? Not urgent, but my OCD says "fix this" >_>

I don't get this apostrophe error on Firefox 3.6 and on Internet Explorer 8.  I see the same error that Billy mentioned on both browsers, but it's just referring to something about "getElementsByTagName" with something about Facebook, which is completely unrelated to your problem.  Are you on an older Internet Explorer, Mike?

Mike, I finally replicated your problem, and it's the PHP coding added backslashes to apostrophes when the Rich Text Editor is enabled.  The moment I checked the "Show WYSIWYG editor on post page by default" option, I got your apostrophe error on Firefox and IE.  Turn that option off for now on your profile settings.

Martin, you may want to check out these two links I found as they address this exact problem:

Does TWC Today support Google Chrome? The TV Media teacher recommended using Google Chrome, and I've been giving it a try the past 24 hours or so. When I hold down alt and press "s" to submit a post, I get a ding on my computer, as if I pressed an incorrect key. However, alt-p, to preview the posts, works fine.

Try "Shift+Alt+S."

Probably because there aren't squares for every group. I noticed that the Site Designer group uses yellow stars instead of green like it's supposed to. Might wanna fix that. Also, is there any reason why the color codes for the content editor and site designer groups were swapped?

Only IE and certain versions if I recall. We will upgrade to RC3 AFTER TWC changes to keep disrupted service to a minimum.

I had the issue with the scroll bar going up to the top while typing a reply or PM all the time. I noticed it was an error with IE 8. If you use an earlier version, or another browser, you should be fine. I changed to Google Chrome for that reason.

Anyways, is there something wrong with attachments? I keep getting this:

I can confirm that it's only when you access the WAP2 format of the main forum and click on a board that it takes you incorrectly to the full version.  If you add what I have in quotes, "?wap2", to the end of the URL when viewing a board, then it all works just fine to view all the posts and reply to any of them until you head back out to the main part of the forum and select another board.  I've put this information here so that Martin and Jesse have something to work with and fix the problem.

The theme was disabled during the merge as it's corrupt and not compatible with RC3... trust me... If you would have switched to it, you would have been locked out of your account in a sense, and wouldn't be able to switch back without an administrator's help. Still waiting for an update at which point Martin would reenable... your best temporary relief is to tack on a ;wap2 on your urls for the lite version.

There weren't any missing posts in the Front Porch if I used the "recent posts" option.  Something strange happened this afternoon between 3 PM and 5 PM as there were no posts made and no new people coming online to the forum.  It doesn't have to do with page 769 but rather a time window where I wonder if the server or something went down.  Everything does seem to work if you're viewing outside of that time window.

Pages 764-769 were all page 231 for me (due to the settings I use). I think it had to do with the post numbers as opposed to pages. I don't think it's that big of a deal anymore that we would have to open a new thread. It's not like we lost anything valuable. Let's just see if this happens again...

I think this means you haven't set your pin yet because your pin doesn't show up on the "Master Member Map." ;) To add a pin, go to your profile and under "forum profile," find the United States and place your pin where you want to.

BTW, we have a couple of misplaced pins on the big member map. I didn't realize a couple of our members lived in the Atlantic Ocean! :P

If you just click on the map before setting your pin, it will default your location to the ocean location. I have gone in and manually changed a bunch of members but it is so easy to do more keep appearing. Its easy to correct if you notice it but a good portion of the members who have it pinned out there aren't too active.

The reason that pin is placed by default in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean just beneath the African coast is because that's where the latitude and longitude is exactly zero.  When you move a pin to your location, you're actually putting in a latitude and longitude.

Probably because too many people were posting the same topics elsewhere in the forums or made topics that could belong to another topic previously posted. I agree with this decision though, it helps keep down topics that might otherwise fit in the General LF, TWC Discussion boards, The Front Porch, etc.

I also have a feeling it is also a spam prevention technique until the next SMF update, because spam has really increased dramatically in the last few weeks...

That's not the code for that emoticon.  It should be rofl2 with a colon before and after it.  Keep in mind that you being on a Mac might be a factor here as most things are designed for PCs.  You can always click on the graphical emoticons themselves and see the codes being shown when you preview your post.

I'm having the same problem. It usually happens when I click the "check all threads as read" button. I login and then it says there was a problem with the session. :dunno:

A few issues:

The Valentine's Day logo is still up on the TWCT site.

Every time I go off of the page for any amount of time (i.e., 3 minutes), I am logged out. I always click "stay logged in". The funny thing is that when I come back, I do not have to input anything into the fields. I click "login" (without ANY text in the box) and it will log me in. It will also log me in if I click on a thread, again without any text in the box.

Wow so apparently SMF forums are coming under attack and this is a safety measure to protect the forum. Bots have target this forum (among thousands of other SMF forums) and are using each username to attempt to gain access. After a certain number of failed attempts a user is logged out if they have been signed in. This may be why its happening to select members at different intervals.  A newer version of the forums has been released with a fix and we are working to rapidly roll this out.

Release Candidate 5 of SMF 2.0 has been released, and is currently being prepped for update. Right now, with Martin's hectic college schedule, it will be at least a week before the upgrade is complete. The update, when it is being applied, will happen late night, as to not affect activity as badly. We will keep you posted.

RC5 is just the security patch and SMF provided a patch for RC4. I will probably just be doing that so we don't have to bother upgrading everything

These bot attacks do probably explain why the forums have been painfully slow at times

I've definitely seen the attacks on logs here, so I'll keep an eye on the accounts in case one of these stupid bots actually does some harm.

If anything happens to your account by these bots, please contact an admin promptly.  Having a good password should prevent most problems.  I haven't noticed any problems on my end as I always log in and log off manually, but I realize that's a more inconvenient way of doing it.

Account safety really should be fine as long as its not a really simple word. It seems the attacks are meant to be more of a nuisance than threat.

Sorry about this Tyler.  :( I have taken some steps to try and block these bots but still some are getting through. I went over the error logs again and noticed you are oddly one of the biggest targets. A bot hits your account about 2-3 times every few hours. There are a couple other members getting hit but not as numerous as you. I have no clue why thats occurring.  :dunno: I will keep looking into ways to prevent this from occurring.

It's because the Rules tab was added, so there are now more tabs on top that are overflowing toward the date/time.  Martin can take a look, but I don't know how much can be fixed here.

If I could make a suggestion to help with the overflow...

Remove the "IRC Chat" tab, because I don't know what that is and always get an error message when I try to open it.

Also, you can probably remove the "Calendar" tab since it can be accessed from the bottom of the home page.

I agree about the calendar; it seems a bit redundant to have a link up top and then have another link with more detailed information in the bottom. And the IRC chat hasn't worked for me anytime I've clicked it.

BTW, and I know it'll be fixed once we delete some stuff, but the "Logout" tab kinda sneaked down next to the current date and time. :P

I found a mod on SMF to hide some of the buttons.  The calendar button has been hidden successfully.  I can also hide a few others if they are requested.  For example, is the search button really needed when there is a search bar at the top?  I have also added the Users Logged In Today mod at the bottom of the forum.

No, please keep the search button. I use that far more since it's much more advanced than the search bar at the top. For example I often search posts by user or during a specific time period or subforum. I do, however, think that the IRC tab should be removed. I think most of us know how to get on the IRC, and those who don't can always check the main site.

Also, don't forget about the IM client mods that I reminded you guys awhile back (Skype, Gtalk, etc).

To respond to what Mike said, the search button should definetely say because that automatically takes you to the "advanced" search.  Often time the bar at the top doesn't work for me anyway, saying "Your last search was less than 5 seconds ago.  Please try again." even when I put something in for the first time!

Even though the overflow is not a problem anymore, I really think the "IRC Chat" should be removed.  It never works, and I see no use for wasted tabs.

How is it not working? It's a Java applet so you may need to authorize it to be used. Also, I agree with you in a way because hardly anyone here has actually visited the chat, regardless of joining the Ustream chat (the one on the IRC Chat tab) or the more active chat (possibly going to be made official if Martin approves) on my server.

Whew, here's a big update to address everyone on the forum issues:

I only have one last question for everyone:  Do any of you still use the Help button or the Member Map button on the top menu bar?

Whew, here's a big update to address everyone on the forum issues:

  • I have removed the IRC Chat button and mod.  We can provide a way to reach our chat in the future, or you can just ask a member who regularly goes there if you have your own IRC client.
  • I have also placed the Calendar as a sub-menu choice under the "Today" button on the top menu bar, because the Upcoming Calendar can disappear if they are no holidays, birthdays, or events coming up within a week.
  • I have installed the Enhanced PM Pop-up mod.  A pop-up box will appear if you have a new PM and allow you to go to your inbox.  However, this feature is not on by default for some members.  If you want to have this turned on for you, go to your profile settings, find Personal Messaging under your Modify Profile drop-down button, and check on the "Show a popup when I receive new messages" option.
  • Mike, I tried to install the Google Talk and Skype profile field mods a few moments ago, but they both failed due to some file compatibility issues.  I don't think that I'll be able to fix them.

I only have one last question for everyone:  Do any of you still use the Help button or the Member Map button on the top menu bar?

Nope.

I don't think I've ever touched the Help button. The Member Map I've looked at a few times, but if I want to find a member, I'll just use the list.

I have removed the Help button.  It only explained how to use the SMF forum in general.  I'm going to leave the Member Map button up as I would have to completely remove the member map mod to do it, and I feel there are some members who still use the map.  Thanks for all the feedback, everyone!  I hope the forum is now in better shape for you all. Thanks, Martin.  I hope you saw my PM as there's only one small internal issue to fix as a result of my actions.  You'll have to take care of it as I cannot access the files for this site.

Yep I'll get on that. Long as the issue isn't visible its not too much a problem. Still best to fix it before we upgrade since it gets messy sometimes

I've been having a hard time getting into the forum this morning.  The page takes a long time to load, if at all.  It took four tries to log in: the first one rejected my password, and the second and third tries timed out.  Once I'm finally in, though, navigation seems to be normal.

It seems to be fine now.  I'm not sure why you had issues this morning unless the host server was acting up again.

There are just some days when this forum runs really slowly, and unfortunately, I don't think there's much of an explanation to it.

What I don't understand is why you don't just stay logged in forever, so you don't have to deal with signing in and out every time you visit (unless you feel unsafe with doing this).

I do try.

My Ubuntu computer lets me stay logged in forever, but my Windows computer, for whatever reason, ignores that and makes me log in every single time I come to the forum.

Did you click on the login tab on the forum and select "Always stay logged in"?

Every time.
Are you allowing your browser to keep the cookies from this site all the time?  If you delete the cookies, that option won't be saved for you the next time you try to log in.  Unfortunately, I can't think of anything else that could explain it.

Yes, cookies are saved.  I'm sure if I dug deeply enough I'd find the problem, but I just don't have the time or patience for that right now.  I can live with simply logging in every time.  At least my browser saves the login information.

Martin, you'll have to look into the issues that the members above are experiencing.  Sadly, I cannot find any explanations other than host server issues.

I think it has something to do with adding "www." at the beginning of the forum URL.

just do https://twctodayforums.com/forums, (https://twctodayforums.com/forums,) seemed to have worked for me.

Again not an issue on our end. Likely because we are on a shared server some other site on the server gets heavy traffic at times.

I think it has something to do with adding "www." at the beginning of the forum URL.

Even at that page you are still logged in. Its just not reflecting on that page. Might be something to do with the layout.

Neither (http://no-www.org/) do I...

Also, in the main site, in the Firefox extension Pentadactyl (http://5digits.org/pentadactyl/), it does not allow me to use the CSS navigation menus with the hints feature. I just thought you should be aware of this:

This is not something that is fixable I'm afraid. It's neither the extension's or our fault. It's just how CSS is in today's world. Sorry for the inconvenience.
