Weather Channel Greenlights 6 New Series in Time for First Upfront in 5 Years
Secrets of the Earth, Weather That Changed the World to premiere first

The Weather Channel held its first-ever full-blown upfront presentation this morning at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Manhattan, with Weather Company president David Kenny touting a new slate of originals and several recent shows that represent a change in the forecast for the elderly cable network. It's been five years since Weather had an upfront of any kind, but it's always been a party and never (until now) a programming presentation.

Was there any mention at the upfront of the changes to daytime?
A few months ago TWC said there would be more of a talk show forum in afternoons.

Wouldn't "When Weather Changed the World" be essentially the same as "When Weather Changed History"?
Honestly, TWC does not need anymore new shows.

Is TWC ever going to produce new episodes of their shows that are actually about weather or just keep broadcasting old episodes?

How about a "When TWC changed the world." Then maybe NBC would get a clue of what it actually is that they bought.

My guess is it is their first public UpFront programming conference/release/whatever since 2008, when there was all the HD hype.

TWC just aired a commercial on that show and yes, it looks exactly like WWCH.

Why not launch a show that shows TWC at its finest?  There could be clips of severe weather coverage, classic LOT8s, and even a little history on the channel here and there.  The OCMs we love from the past would be in these clips forecasting the weather.  Of course, there would have to be a disclaimer that none of the clips are related to current weather events.  As the channel thins out things like live weather coverage and LFs, though, this disclaimer will become less necessary.

It would be one golden hour a week of TWC at its best.  You might say that TWC would never go for it, but if it were packaged as another hour of longform, then they just might take the bait.

I think, by this point, any activity that takes place outdoors qualifies as having "something" to do with the weather.  In the absence of a "Geology Channel," I think The Weather Channel is as close as they're going to get for finding a place for such a show.  It doesn't seem to fit with Discovery's current programming, and The Learning Channel is now anything but.

In my opinion TWC should return to live weather programming 2pm-5pm instead of reruns of long form programming.
Leave the long form for evenings and overnight.
Maybe I'm wrong though I just can't believe there are that many people tuning in to reruns 2pm-5pm.

I don't think there are that many people tuning in to TWC at 2pm - 5 pm period.  Many are at work, so TWC probably finds that it makes more sense to show long-form than have live coverage.  Why have live coverage if relatively few people are watching?

TWC is airing new episodes of "Weather Caught on Camera.".
They are using just a voice over and Mike Bettes is no longer the host.
Hopefully this means other shows actually about weather like "Storm Stories" are going to have new episodes produced.

I've never watched more than a couple of minutes of any of this programming, and those couple of minutes are only because I put the remote control down to temporarily free my hands for something else.

6 new series? If only they could put as much effort into upgrading their weather coverage as they put into these inane shows. Also, if they can't be bothered to have at least one man in a studio covering the weather for huge chunks of the day, then they must be close to bankruptcy or something. This is afternoon we're talking about here, not 1 AM.

I guess a scrolling ticker on the bottom of the "weather always on" format describing severe weather is a "good enough" replacement for them.  That way, they still get to air longform yet technically they're also still covering severe weather live.

Correct. Ice Pilots started on Nat Geo for seasons 1 and 2.
TWC picked up the series in 2012 airing seasons 1 & 2 then the new season  3.
Apparently TWC dropped the show after season 3.

"Four new series are being scheduled by the Weather Channel: “Catching Hell,” about commercial spearfishers; “Now What?” about people’s behavior during weather emergencies; “Tornado Alley”; and “Wicked in the Weather,” about meteorological legends like “a bad moon rising.” Four series are being renewed, including “Strangest Weather on Earth” and “Why Planes Crash.”

IMO I would much rather see new episodes of "Storm Stories" and "It Could Happen Tomorrow" than watch shows about people fishing, gold-digging and other non-weather related whatnot.

Also wouldn't mind seeing new episodes of that Peter Lik show from 2011. I really liked all of the landscape pics that Lik took  :)  plus I happen to have all 13 episodes on DVD which I recorded from TV a couple of years ago.

"Cold Water Captains" is not a new produced for TWC show either.
It's a Discovery Canada show "Cold Water Cowboys" that finished its first season on April 25th.

TWC Renews ‘Fat Guys in the Woods’ for Season Two

The Weather Channel has picked-up reality/survivalist series “Fat Guys in the Woods” for a second season, with production set to begin in November for a premiere in second quarter 2015. Hosted by survival expert Creek Stewart, “Fat Guys in the Woods” takes groups of three average Joes into the woods to battle Mother Nature and teach them the art of outdoor survival while armed with only the basic of tools. Next season will feature new locations, different weather conditions and women joining the mix.
