Title: TWC considering going off air on Christmas
Post by: lfmusiclover on November 20, 2008, 10:03:10 AM
According to a respected poster at EasternUSWx, and according to NewsBlues, TWC's financial situation is such that it is considering going taking live programming OFF THE AIR on Christmas Day, instead airing recorded programming the entire day, thereby saving alot of money in overtime pay.

It's the Storm Stories Atlanta Half-Marathon, this Christmas Day only on The Weather Channel!

If this happens I certainly would think that viewership (any it might have on Christmas Day) would be diminished quite severely.

You would think that with NBC behind Twc financing wouldn't be too much of a problem.  Really hope they keep live programming on Christmas

Not necessarily. I heard that one of the groups that purchased TWC (Blackstone, I think it was) lost alot of money in the 3rd quarter.

24 hours of long-form programming?! WTF

I would hope not. We need tobe kept updated on weather conditions in the United States! BLASPHEMY! I doubt this would be true if there was some big storm system in the US or another hurricane (it has happened) in the tropics...

Oh, I have no doubt that if a major event were happening TWC would certainly stay on the air.

If it were to happen, it would probably be nothing but Forecast Earth :P

I have enough problems with the afternoon schedule, but taking Xmas day off is ridiculous. Instead of showing long-form programs, how about looping the local/satellite forecast? Music could be Trammell Starks or someone else, not Christmas music, the music genre that I hate as much as rap and boy band.

Very interesting! I wonder if TWC had to go over their budget on the HD studion too

Excellent idea: I'm sure the OCM's would much rather enjoy being at home with their families and enjoying the holidays rather than working on air over Christmas Day. Not only does it ease this matter, but it saves money. Brilliant

I agree with you. Most other people are off on Christmas, so I think they should be too.

I think in case there is any severe weather problems (there has to be in at least one section of the world), they should keep 1 or 2 meteorologists on duty, or maybe to update weather.com

You know what would be better than long-form? They could just air the emergency feed with Christmas music and LDL all day, along with the LOT8's and a few commercial breaks in between.

I actually like that idea.

I think that's an excellent idea, it's better than long form programming running a whole day and the OCMs can have a break to spend time with family and friends.

Maybe they do not have very good ratings on Christmas Day, so they figure they shouldn't waste money being live?

I would think your correct. After all, how many people do you really think watch TWC on Christmas day?

My guess is it would be eaiser to sell blocks of programming rather than just plain weather. The shopping channels have went off the air for years. I think QVC used to show a fireplace with a burning log with Christmas music.. Now its mostly local choirs and employee bios.

I won't have any problems with TWC going off on Christmas. I would like to see a national scroll of warnings/advisories continuous and airport delay maps once in awhile.. There will be a lot of people traveling and many staying in Motel rooms..

All I can say WOW.  I mean think of all the viewers they're gonna lose!   :o TWC on XMAS is a great way for me to get away from my annoying family. I can barely understand there reason, but then again it counter acts them saving money by losing viewers.

It looks like this won't be happening after all. Zap2it has the schedule out for Christmas and it's just a normal weekday schedule.

It's still subject to change, though.

Exactly. You can't assume that the schedule is correct this far out. Nor can you really assume that the program guide will even show TWC being off the air.

Maybe we'll see a Christmas LOT8's Flavor: 24/7! But it will be interesting to see what they do.

I'm always at home in the states for Christmas, I guess I wont be watching TWC christmas morning!

Could this turn out to be the 24 Hours of Trammell Feed with Xmas instead music if it happens?

That would be neat if they did that.

What's even better than that is if TWC had a live Weatherscan feed of Atlanta playing nothing more but Trammell Starks.

Why the hell would TWC stream the local ATL WxScan nationally? Whats your logic behind that??

I'll be able to grab some Atlanta, Orlando, and Key Biscayne TWC / WxScan clips next week!

Can't wait to see, although I can't subscribe. :hmm:

And you wouldn't mind coming 60 more miles down past Orlando to capture FiOS's Tampa WXSCAN, would you? :P

Run weather scan on the main channel + long LOT8's brakes.

That would be impossible because many headends don't carry Weatherscan.

Maybe they could play LOT8's to WxScan music.

Not to mention, its impossible.

They are 2 seprate TV networks. For one to display another, every single headend in the united states would have to re-patch weatherscan over TWC's main feed. It's not like weatherstars have access to unique weatherscan units, let alone the ability to display it. Its the most retarded thing I've honestly ever heard.

Well, right on cue, First Outlook began live with Jeff and Jen, all be it no teaser o_O... It seems like it's being master controlled or overdived or something... transitions are still there though (like for North East, Mid Atlantic, South, etc)

The Weekly Planner also strangely used the Monday, Chooseday, and Friday opening theme music instead of the normal segment opener music; I have a feeling that someone different may be operating this show.
