Title: The Weather Channel - LIVE ON YOUTUBE
Post by: livefromButler on July 02, 2014, 03:42:32 PM
UPDATE: DISCOVERED AT 3:10 PM EST.
UPDATE: Video made private at 4:15 PM EST :(.
UPDATE: Available again at 4:50 PM
Hi guys, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but, today I spotted on TWC's YouTube Channel that they are running a livestream of the National HD feed!

I quickly ran downstairs and turned on my screen recorder.  I was one of the first five users tuned in!  I managed to capture the first Local on the 8s segment they played, as well as the Hurricane Central intro, the first one played on TWC with the new graphics as far as I know.  I'll be placing this recording on YouTube soon.

As of 4:50 PM EST, the stream is still running here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmPN3n_SVPw&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmPN3n_SVPw&feature=youtu.be)

I really hope this isn't just a temporary thing due to Tropical Storm Arthur, but if it is, I'm grateful to be able to watch the HD feed for once, as Armstrong doesn't provide TWC in HD.

Here's a link to my recording: http://youtu.be/ICHbXmae8us (http://youtu.be/ICHbXmae8us)

UPDATE: So now the question is, is this a sign of things to come?

TWC sometimes does live online streaming when big weather events occur.  Since the video is named "test", I bet they are preparing to use youtube as a replacement or additional option when they do live online streaming.  Cable providers would not be happy if they started streaming online all the time.

This is nothing new.  While I do not think YouTube has ever been used as a streaming service for TWC before, they have provided live online streaming during major weather events like hurricanes or major tornado outbreaks as ruhgster mentioned.

While I do like the idea of online streaming, especially when I can't have access to a TV, unfortunately I don't think they can do this permanently - as ruhgster also mentioned, cable companies would freak.

Clearly this is new, and it's against YouTube's streaming terms of service. Notice that it's the actual live feed from TWC with commercials, ticker and LOT8s. In the past, all they just showed was the live feed only when the shows were on (without commercials and LOT8s), and they didn't show the LDL either.

Also, it's against YouTube's terms of service because a streamer cannot insert any form of their own advertising into their streams.

As of 7:51 PM EST, the stream has stopped streaming.  You can still watch the buffered content, but it is no longer streaming.  This just makes me curious as to why it was there in the first place.

It's not an official TWC stream.  When Arthur hits hurricane status, and if the models keep pushing left like they have, expect them to go live on YouTube.

Umm, guys; did you not see the little verified checkmark next to TWC's channel name. That means that it is the OFFICIAL TWC YouTube channel. Plus, their YouTube page regularly posts AMHQ videos.

I'm pretty sure that is TWC's official YouTube page.  It's easy enough to just go to the channel which created that stream and see that.  Contrary to what Zach said, I could have thought I remember seeing an online streaming feed from TWC during a tornado outbreak one time that included the LDL and LOT8s (maybe no commercials though).  However, that was on the TWC website - yes, TWC making this available through YouTube is new.  Perhaps they have reached an agreement through Google that allows them to run an unedited feed of what viewers see on the channel?  I don't know.

As the title of the stream "test" implies, it's highly likely that TWC was only testing the live stream this afternoon and that is why it is not available at the present moment.  However, I can almost assure that the stream (or some type of live stream) will return very soon when Arthur becomes a hurricane.

Here's a bit of an update:

TWC started another stream at tinyurl.com/twclive4 (http://tinyurl.com/twclive4).  This stream has been running since July 4th.

Today, I found some activity on the stream.  This small clip was identified airing today (7/16/14) at 4:03 PM EST.  It only consisted of this image and some audio.

I'm hoping for the stream's return.

UPDATE: Various other smaller clips have been idenified.

The link you gave leads to a 18 min test video.  I can't find the live link unless they stopped the live feed or I misunderstood your post.

Alright so over the course of the past month or so, several test streams have been broadcast.  It appears that the streams do only appear when a severe weather event is taking place.

As of the time this post was written, a stream has been running for nearly 4 hours at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14Wzn-0uQMY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14Wzn-0uQMY) and is still running live.

So it's interesting to follow these tests, and also quite fun because I do not pay for TWC HD on cable

UPDATE: Stream now private

Now, there is a stream that seems to be online only, showing severe coverage.  "WATCH LIVE: Severe Storm Coverage:" http://youtu.be/cei3uGi1nFU (http://youtu.be/cei3uGi1nFU)

Pro tip if you ever go into the tv biz.... if you are wearing a mic ALWAYS assume it's live. I heard a few cuss words dropped in some of the convo when they were "off air" in that clip from the stream. Oops!

When I visited TWC I was let in on some information regarding this. You guys guessed correctly, in the event of a severe event in a local area, TWC will livestream  the coverage on YouTube as well as breaking into the locally affected market and keeping the national feed on natural drama programming.

This is the off air feed, so that explains the swear words and such, this is only temporary while they find a way to get the viz feed onto the livestream without having to stream the national feed w/ commercials.

Correct but even if.... If you are near a mic just assume it's live.  Essentially everything is recorded in this day and age so be safe than sorry
