Title: Studio Upgrade/Revamp
Post by: TWCToday on June 28, 2011, 02:43:20 AM
Now that an OCM tweeted about it I can mention that the studios are undergoing some renovations. There will be several new sets and a new desk. I have heard conflicting info that new graphics will be introduced. We shall have to see about that one

The HD studio already looks so good. I can't imagine what other ideas the have in store right now. By new graphics, I hope you mean for the IS. After four years, they could use some touching up. I'll be interested to see what happens.

They seriously do, not because I still hate the way it looks, but it should have some kind of a graphical relation to the on air graphics.

I'd be willing to bet that nothing is going to happen to the icons or the background on the IS. It's a studio revamp. I'd be surprised if anything gets changed graphics wise.

Yes, Martin said it's possible. But TWC has said a lot of things.

I really don't understand why the studio needs upgrades. It looks okay as is.

But yes, it would be good for the IS to get a few updates. It hasn't been touched (other than given the new icons) since September 2008 (I believe.)

Right, September 2008 was when the final version of the blue LDL (once again, minus the icons) came out

Both? I think. There is a curtain behind the expert desk with work going on.

Well since we are due for some graphics changes maybe we will get a good relaunch or something. That's what id like to see at least. Maybe these new graphics will be good and memorable like the 2001-2003 version. 2011 version of the 2001 relaunch is what I mean in other words.

I highly doubt it....

Also, Martin...that image you posted isn't working.

It looks there has been some graphics changes recently - mapwise and some fonts.

I still have a lot of trouble with the maps that are "contoured" temperature maps.  You slap boxes on for cities during the Planner and it makes it worse  :thrilled:.

I like the filled in isotherms - yellow for all 60s, tan for all 50s, royal blue for all 40s
They keep using that thinking it's just dandy, and I am like "what color is Cincinnati?" Orange? Red? Somehere in between?

They'll be focusing on more fluff and less content. :(

Its really aggrevating when they have those boxes in the way, I also don't like how the map overlays are gradient fills, that makes it hard to tell the temp when you get a blend of two colors that look like another color on the scale.

That's a really good idea, Alex. :twothumbs:

Or even if they didn't do that, their Weekly Planner maps on-air could at least look like the ones on weather.com...then I can actually see all the gradient changes. BUT, heaven forbid that they don't put boxes around the city-names or make the icons 10x larger, and a bunch of other "effect" junk that is often worthless. <_<

Which really, really, REALLY bothers me. I remember even as recently as 2008, right after the relaunch, when they actually cared about the planner, and had two OCMs on it (one for temps, one for weather conditions). They took a great product and really ruined it.
Title: Re: Studio Upgrade/Revamp
Post by: WeatherWitness on June 29, 2011, 01:38:53 PM
Overall, the Weekly Planner has really, really gone downhill. Not only have the graphics declined considerably, the presentation has gone "down the drain" as well. I liked it when two OCMs would present the planner: one would do the weather and one would do temps and all seven days would be presented. But now, the Weekly Planner is only presented by one OCM, it is seldom finished with all 7 days (how is that even a "Weekly Planner"?), and what is really annoying is that it is rushed through. At first they start out by having separate maps for the weather conditions and high temperatures, but then towards the end they combine the temperatures and conditions on one map. And it looks TERRIBLE. <_<

And the title on the top even says "7 DAY FORECAST." That's a fail. If they could at LEAST dedicate their :20 segment to the weekly planner only and then show their fluff everywhere else. And whatever happened to their region-by-region forecasts? And no, showing it in the five second forecast updates doesn't count. <_<

About the only time to get something like that is on First Outlook or the Early Weekend shows, that is the only place I've seen them cover weather like they used to. There is some news, but its all weather news in those shows from what I've seen.

I confirmed they are building a larger/permanent green screen. Now not sure if thats in the HD studio or somewhere else. This makes sense though since they have switched back to using the green screen a lot more. The HD studio really isn't equipped for that

Or better yet, why didn't they just remodel the old studio into an HD studio in the first place instead of wasting money on building a HD studio? TWC is a big place, I'm sure they could have filmed somewhere else before their HD launch until they finished remodeling it.

It would be interesting to see how letterboxing would work with the Intellistar. Unless they come up with a way to start scrolling the current information within the letterboxed screen.

It would probably essentially be the same as longform thats produced in HD, on the live shows, but with the current SD LDL instead of the HD LDL, and maybe the squeezeback being unchanged, but I dunno..

So...as suggested, they could pull a CNN and pretty much only run one LDL (the HD one) and letterbox all content produced along with the LDL? If that's the case...I like it. If they letterbox with the SD LDL like on some long-form, ehh.

Yeah, you can see the structure of the new green screen in the HD studio; it's curved at the bottom like the one in the old Weekend View studio so that they can have the floor in the shots without any negative effect.

Maybe they should also fix the lighting in the studio while they're at it. >_>

And your point being? They wouldn't move the control room, that's way too many wires and such to re-route. You do realize that the producers have to get ready for their show somewhere before they go to the control room don't you? As well as the people that don't do weather, they have to be somewhere too. Its called the Satellite Center, because its a Satellite Center. Not a control room(or at least main one). Well the satellite center didn't come to be until they also started using the expert desk. Satellite center probably has been there for a while.
We all could be right about both. Let not argue this point, its plausible both could be control rooms. No idea why I cared to argue this lol. Sorry...

I don't doubt it now that I think about it(thoughts a little slow in the AM). I've seen TWC doing live updates on other networks, so I guess they'd need a second control room or something . Question though: Where do the producer work before there shows? I've never seen exactly, only the weather producers.

The lighting for the key wall is pretty terrible, and the camera in front of the key wall starting going into stutter-motion earlier.

They have an interesting stand-up desk with two desktop computers where the OCMs can work with the maps.

They're back in the HD studio for the second half of Day Planner today. I wonder if construction is finally complete.

I noticed when they started to use what is now the old 3D Studio (Green Screen) that the video quality was not the best. The color saturation was low, lighting was dark and who ever was standing on the left side had a blue light reflection on them which you can see in the last photo below.
During the construction the last two weeks it looked like they were using the old 3D Studio with the camera zoomed in for the map segments.

Since they switched to the new green screen the lighting and color is much better.
Attached are stills of the new green screen area, still of the new green screen in use and the old green screen.

I think this is part of the 'construction'. Heather gave us a behind the scenes look at their 'new key wall' at 12:41 PM ET.

So it's looking like construction that was done in the HD studio was to install this new permanent green screen where the WUWA set used to be (and the city-backdrop and starlight corner was before that)? :dunno:

Where does WUWA broadcast from then?

Al Roker does his stuff from a studio in the GE Building at 30 Rockefeller Center in NYC and as mentioned Stephanie Abrams does her segments from The Weather Channel HD studio.

On the construction,
I always wondered when they started to use expert desk area if the Global Forecast Center in the background was a part of the old studios.
Am I correct that the HD studio was built and attached to the original building?

Where is the Digital Media Center in relation to the HD studio?

That's what it's looking like. If you compare this picture (https://twctodayforums.com/forums/everything-else-twc/general-twc-discussion/msg142706/#msg142706) with a temporary green-screen (posted by Jesse) with the one above, it looks like the new "3D green screen" shown above has replaced the entire set.

Correct. I still don't get why they have to have the new permanent green screen stretch that far out, unless they plan to do wide shots or use it for "3D" effects, but yes, the former window backdrop/WUWA set is now defunct. Higher ups like how the high resolution graphics look a hell of a lot better on a green screen than on a blurry video wall. In the permanent setup, the lighted pillars have been turned off and they rotated one of the monitors around so they can see what they're looking at. I don't know if they're planning to do any more construction in the HD studio itself...

The new green screen stretches out to the floor so they can be walking on the graphics.
I noticed tonight the old green screen area is still being used.
They had Jim walking on a map. You could tell it was the old green screen because that blue light was reflecting on Jim and the video was noisy and darker.
When Jim was done they went to the new green screen for the Top5 segment with both OCMs standing in a wide camera shot. Old and new are shown in the images below.

As mentioned in the post above, this new green screen stretches out to the floor to provide "so-called" 3D effects (although I think a lot of us agree they could be a whole lot better).

But what is the old green screen area? I'm pretty sure the temporary green screen that was used before this one was installed doesn't exist anymore. Really, it can't...there's no room for it!

Crystal Egger posted a photo of the old 3D green screen area on March 25th when it was new.

It looks like they took the corner of a studio and painted it green.
That would explain why the keying does not look that good from it.
I'm not sure exactly were it is though its still in use.
I wonder if it will eventually only be used as a backup green screen?

Um? No it was not. The one used for 3D sets previously was 2 walls and a floor. The one in the HD studio was just one wall. The pic below is of the HD studio. You don't see anything with a greenscreen on the floor, which is what you have to have to make it look like someone is walking on it. They were doing that before they even got the new one in the studio.

Trevor, based on the panorama that Donovan linked to, the 3D chroma-key wall that was first seen is nowhere in the HD studio, so for now, it's current location is unknown. However, there are several spots in the former SD studio that are still used.

Based on the end of the special Cantore WCL 7 PM 'cast from last week, I got a broader idea of where the Satellite Center was, and it seems to be located somewhere to the left or right of the GFC, which is in the former SD studio. However, the Satellite Center had to have been built sometime after the HD studio went into full use on all shows in 2008, or maybe when Studio 1B (the studio that was in front of the GFC directly) had broadcasts terminated from it and moved to Studio 1A.

From watching First Outlook today, it looks to me like they may have removed a section of the set immediately to the right of the FO desk. Are they slowly but surely revamping the design of the entire studio?

EDIT: After seeing a wider shot, it's actually a giant black rectangular box that stretches from floor to ceiling in front of the wall. The wall is still there. What could the giant black box be for?

For 11am-2pm ET today they are using the Digital Media Center instead of the HD studio and using the old green screen they call the 3D Studio.
During a graphics transition Heather went from standing with Maria in the Digital Media Center to doing the Weekly Planner from the old 3D Studio green screen so I'm guessing those areas are close together.

Yes the images are from the Hauppauge HD PVR.
I simply played back the file with VLC and used the shift + S command to take the snapshots.
If the files do not play back in VLC it might be because the computer does not have the MPEG4 AVCHD codec installed.
You should be able to google a freeware tool to install a bunch of video codecs.

If you need more help you can PM me so we stay on topic.

Well, from Vivian's special surprise day, it looks like they have converted the former WUWA corner (which was the city backdrop and supposed "couch" corner even before that) to the location for the new, permanent I'm guessing, 3D green screen. That construction looks to be complete. Were there any other renovations being done in the HD studio?

As far as the Global Forecast Center, IDK on that progress.

2pm to 5pm the used the DMC and the old green screen.

Have not noticed any changes in the HD studio since they were back at 7pm except  green screen lighting on the OCMs has been dark tonight.

I noticed that as well, I think maybe they are trying to reduce the green reflection on the "work set"

If you look closely, you can see that the second TV from the left on the top row has an IS2, fwiw. The one to to the left of that is the SD sat feed.

It looks pretty nice, actually. I'm not completely sold on the wall color yet. Have to wait and see.

The blue accents and lighting really add a nice touch. It matches the HD studio main set desk much better.

I don't know if it has anything to do with work they might be doing to the HD studio but,
I'm noticing tonight and at times this week for some shows the graphics on the green screen are not fully keyed in.

In this still from the 10pm hour, which I believe is the green screen in the HD studio,
you can see the map is not keyed in 100% and darker since you can see through it.
Notice the seam where the floor and wall meet going through the bottom of the screen and the scuff marks on the floor.
There is also a soft edge around the OCMs.

Not sure if this is the other green screen by the DMC but Earlier in the 7pm show the map is keyed in 100% and you can't see the floor or wall.

Here is a side by side of the bad key and the good key. Are they using two different green screens areas?

Usually when they do work on the Studio, they move to another studio. So, its likely that they are using a different green screen.

I don't think they are using two green screens for Weather Center Live because it would take to much time to walk from the HD studio to the other green screen by the Digital Media Center.

I just think the settings to key in the maps somehow changes and is not correct.
Not only is the key not full with white colors gray but the dark colors on the OCM's have a bit of a higher contrast on them.

The same thing happened last night. The maps were fine for 7pm but then at 8:10pm when the weather updates started the map keying on the green screen was not 100% in it stayed that way on the 10pm and 1am WCL.

HD Studio Green Screen with correct map keying in.

The digital media center seems to look slightly different tonight, either the lighting has changed, or the background is more "lit" than normal. Looks great though.

They used the Digital Media Center and the old green screen for Day Planner 11am-5pm.

7pm they barely used the studio. There was one segment at the video wall that was ok and two segments from the small table area with very dark lighting.
You can notice in the still low dark the HD studio is compared to the other areas.
