Title: New Video Wall
Post by: TWCToday on March 08, 2012, 10:10:07 PM
Well goodbye video wall. This should solve a lot of their problems.

"Work being done on the old giant video wall! It will be replaced by 12 large LCD monitors. I hear it should be complete by the end of this month!"

Image and updates curtsey of Kelly Cass.
"This wall of monitors will likely not be used for weather maps...we will keep doing those from the green wall (mostly head-to-toe shots)"

I wonder if the 12 LCD's will have bezel's or not? I'd think not if it's going to be a video wall. That must be a somewhat large investment for TWC, but it will probably last much longer than the projection system.

I hope this new video wall won't be as much of a waste of money as the old one was!

I would argue it wasn't. It was used for a considerably long time. If you compare to other networks with live coverage, TWC really hasn't updated things in its main studios all that much. I think they got their moneys worth out of it.

I wonder how CNN does all of their video walls. Our those LCDs or video projection systems? In any case I hope it ends up looking something like what they have.

CNN's video Walls do look really nice. I think they use a projection system for the curved wall they have and then larger LCD's for the flat and smaller walls.

I have a feeling it will be a larger scale of the expert desk video wall with monitors showing different image sources. IE: Live video on one, source 2 on another, radar source on another, graphics system 3 on another, etc, etc. but can all be turned in to one large image. Just my idea.

I agree with you that it will be an LCD monitor wall where each each display content or all the monitors can display content.
My guess would be 3 rows of 4.

I hope they gave the video wall to recycling.

Doubt there were may pieces that could realistically be recycled in that setup. And it's not like it could be sent to another studio, as it was a custom build and fit for that room.

Probably means he hopes they give the viddeo wall to an electronics recycling outfit instead of just tossing it into a dumpster behind the building.

The new video wall is being used as of the 10pm WCL.
It's a big blue wall divided into into squares with the two rows of 6 LDC monitors in front of the wall.
I'm guessing the wall behind the monitors will be able to change colors like the other walls of the studio.

The video all appears to be completed.
It was shown during Your Weather Today but not used. Day Planner does have segments standing at the video wall.

There must be a few bugs they are working out because they only used the video wall for the last segment during the 4pm edition of Weather Center Live and the second monitor on the bottom left was going on and off.
Kelly said they are not using it for the 7pm show.

Does anyone think they should have made the video wall bigger?  I'm sure it properly suits the functions they need it for, but when compared to the rest of the wall, it seems so small.

I like the way they did that "background" wall, though.  Nice use of lightning.

My two favorite parts are:
The lack of a giant, oversized black bezel around the wall (the one on the former wall was too big, IMHO)
The wonderful lighting behind the wall. Reminds me of something I'd see on FNC.

Now, if we can just get them to turn these lights on....  :bleh:

They do have those lights on, just not in that color. I agree, that color really adds to the shot. They should turn them that color. The entire studio for that matter.  :thrilled:

I must say I dig the lighted tile wall behind the new video screen.

Also, do they still use the purple pillar bars during the 1am show, or do they only use the yellow and blue colors now?

Don't worry... in another couple of decades, I'm sure whole walls in TV studio will be video walls.  Just think of how the TV news has progressed over time.  A static background with no graphics gave way to rear projector screens to superimposed boxes to chroma key to TV panels.  Not all necessarily in that order after the first two, but... you get the point.  :)

The video wall was used for the end of the 7pm show and at 10pm the desk has been moved so the video wall is behind it.
Not sure if this means it's in use for all shows or they are still testing it.

:offtopic:

I love your graphic about last year's Springfield tornadoes.  I lived in eastern Massachusetts at the time, and, though our weather wasn't nearly as severe as in Springfield and surrounding communities, we still had some nasty weather.  In the middle of the morning we had a torrential downpour with a severe thunderstorm, but that soon passed and the skies were nice and sunny.  After another few hours, all H broke out.

What I find even more amazing is that this was predicted so accurately in advance, so people could prepare for it.  If I recall correctly, Massachusetts was even given a TOR:CON index of 10.

That's exactly what happened in my area!! But I don't recall a TOR:CON of 10 because it's only been issued twice (4/27/11 and 3/2/12). But at the time I was just getting back into watching TWC...

Anyway, getting back on topic, YWT is using the video wall a lot. Looks like it didn't take that long to get out the bugs that Kelly mentioned.

It appears they have a set studio format for each show weekdays.
Your Weather Today uses the video wall behind the desk.
Day Planner the desk moved so the studio wall is behind the desk.
Weather Center Live 4pm, 7pm, and 10pm has had the video wall behind the desk and at 1am they switch back to the studio wall.

As far as I can remember, they never went "full red." The most red I remember being turned on , was the red line-type lights embedded in the walls.

I haven't seen any full red either, but this evening would certain qualify in my book to be in "red mode" even from my viewpoint where I felt it was overused too much.

To the left of the video wall they have added a Perceptive Pixel touch flat screen.
NBC must have made a big purchase of them because the new WNBC studio and Wake Up With Al in NYC now use the same touch screens.

I don't mind the touch screens. They're at least much more vivid and easy to see than the old video-wall system was.
