"Weather Channel’s Mike Bettes will host a new, live 2-hour show airing weeknights at 6pmET. The currently unnamed show will launch in March. The timeslot had been the home of former full-time mets Kelly Cass and Nick Walker."
Glad to see Bettes returning to Weeknights. Will the new show be like Abrams & Bette: Beyond the Forecast? And will Bettes be replaced on AMHQ?

And will Bettes be replaced on AMHQ?
I think it's more likely AMHQ will be replaced. It will fall apart without him anyway.
-
Whoa!
I guess the other shoe has dropped regarding the demotion of Kelly and Nick. I'm just going to leave this right here...
Does this mean come 2015 they are done with live weather at 6pm and going to reality shows?
I hate to say it, but I think it's pretty certain that this is the case. Kelly has been the host of the 6-8pm edition. If they intend on keeping the show, why demote her? Does management just not like her as the host? That doesn't seem likely. So, unless they're doing something drastic like bringing back Abrams and Bettes: Beyond the Forecast ;), it's two more hours of longform. Amazing!
Seriously though, I didn't see this coming. A couple more thoughts...
1. This is awesome!
2. They really should bring Stephanie back down to Atlanta to be his co-host.
3. They better not name it Weather Center Live.
4. Don't think Mike will be replaced on AMHQ. It's basically turned into Morning Rush (with Sam instead of Mike) over the past couple of months, anyway.

Here's the full press release from TWC...
http://www.theweathercompany.com/newsroom/2015/01/08/weather-channel-launch-new-live-program-hosted-mike-bettes (http://www.theweathercompany.com/newsroom/2015/01/08/weather-channel-launch-new-live-program-hosted-mike-bettes)
Sounds like it will be a pretty cool show. It'll be in The Lab, and it's name will be announced later. So I'm guessing it won't be Weather Center Live, since it seems that it will be formatted differently too. In fact, "Beyond the Forecast" would be an excellent name, based on the description.
-
I smell a carriage dispute coming again... :whistling2:

By who? Because of Mike's new show? It's just taking the place of WCL those two hours. I'm assuming It's a TWC run show so it will have LO8, LDL, WATT, etc.
-
2. They really should bring Stephanie back down to Atlanta to be his co-host.
3. They better not name it Weather Center Live.
I agree with that first point. If they brought Abrams back to Atlanta, the show would probably get good ratings. And I really hope it doesn't get named WCL.  There's already enough of that on during the day as it is.

Wasn't this supposed to debut in March? I did some poking around and I wasn't able to find any information on this new show besides that press release from January. From what I've seen on Mike's Twitter and FB, it seems like he has been handling midday expert desk duties for a couple of weeks. I wonder when they're going to shift him to evenings (Carl Parker is usually in The Lab during that time.) Since Kim is the current evening co-anchor and she is leaving in early April, maybe Mike's show will start then.

It might be delayed? i'm thinking if so it will debut in April or May.

There are still five days left in March... Anything could happen! It could happen tomorrow...! or Monday...

There are some talks of a "new show this summer". Mike Bettes and Sarah Dillingham have both mentioned a new live show coming this summer in their Periscopes. I would assume this is the same show we heard about that was supposed to be hosted by Bettes in March. Sarah seemed like she couldn't say much about it, just that there is a new show coming this summer. I wonder why the launch was pushed back until summer!

Hmmmmm....
@mikebettes: 360 degree view of Studio 1C at TWC. It's about to transform into something VERY COOL. Stay tuned http://t.co/zBVrXlDyol (http://t.co/zBVrXlDyol)

The new show hosted by Mike Bettes will debut mid-August! It will air from 6-8pm EST.
@nzimmett: Weather Channel wants to attract Weather Underground fans with new show http://t.co/6MkApjuMPF (http://t.co/6MkApjuMPF)

Apparently this is going to be unlike anything TWC has ever done before. The studio will be a "casual clubhouse." The article says 3-5 PM pacific time, so I guess it's going to be geared towards Wunderground fans especially on the west coast. If so, I wonder if it's on a little too early.
IMO, this could either be really really good, or absolutely awful.
-
I really hope this show works, I barely watch the network anymore.
-
I'm guessing these will be used as decorations in the new studio.

Me too. Aside from Weekend Recharge sometimes, and an occasional evening when Dave and Alex are on, I haven't been watching either. However, I am really interested to see how this turns out, and that's not something I've said about TWC in a while.
-
well, we now have a name and date of premiere of the show.
the show will be known as Weather Underground TV, a TV show in which the weather site that TWC bought out 3 years ago will be on at 6-8 ET and this show will debut on Aug 24.

According to Sarah Dillingham's twitter page, she will co-host the show with Mike:
@SarahDillingham: Come get geeky with us August 24th! @wunderground is taking over TV: http://t.co/d6CRTciQVj (http://t.co/d6CRTciQVj) #WUTV @weatherchannel http://t.co/HqbBdVGDNn (http://t.co/HqbBdVGDNn)

I don't watch TWC much anymore either. I hope the show works too.
-
Here's a picture of part of the studio from @Wunderground on Twitter. Notice the radar map on that screen... I wonder if they'll be using the older-style maps on this show.

How unoriginal.
Wow is that set ugly
I agree. Yikes. Not sure what look they were aiming for, but the walls look terrible, design and everything, especially with the poles hiding wires clearly visible. Also not sure what the pinball machine is for.
-
Wow is that set ugly
Glad I'm not the only one who thought so. I know the look is not meant to be bright/colorful obviously, but ruggedness they were going for looks kinda bland to me.

Well this for sure should attract viewers. :wall:
What the heck! That doesn't even look like wallpaper, just plain filthy wall that you'd see in an vacant basement. :footinmouth:

They said it was supposed to look like an Underground bar, but it really does look like a basement.
-
Yuck! That set does look terrible! Based on the walls and the wooden desk, this set kinda looks like it was converted from an old bar or pizza parlor. The 'Twister' pinball machine itself probably came from one of those places or who knows where else.
-
Yikes. The graphics are not much better.

Looks like they are taking the whole Weather"Underground" too far.
-
...I like it...casual set for a casual show.

Yeah, it really does look like they're actually in a basement. I presume that was probably intentional, but I still don't like it.
Is this still Studio 1C? I can't make out the finished version from the "in progress" version that was posted earlier this month: http://360.io/ma4gze. (http://360.io/ma4gze.)

I think it has to be 1C. Hopefully he'll post another one of those when it's done.
Meanwhile, Stephanie Abrams tweeted that she'll be contributing to the show... In her pajamas.

Look closely at the reflection in the monitor in this picture... It appears the new WUTV area was constructed on the opposite side from the existing setup.

Anyone here have any thoughts about The Weather Channel's TV promos for the new Wunderground show? Here's one of them:
Hot Tub Weather Machine #wutv (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uW_icnZKGuQ#)
That promo in particular, I actually hate the most. I mean really, a fart joke?
-
The TV promos are pretty annoying, mainly because of the screeching noises, which are way too loud.
Well, Mike has finally been "hired" to be the host, and we get a taste of the music for the new show.

Mike tweeted out an interesting Mashable article about the show. Dave Clark says that they've "gotten rid of those mainstream reality shows that could really be on any network." No idea what he's talking about, about because they've been advertising Fat Guys in the Woods a lot this summer. The multiple carriage disputes and declining ratings are well-documented in the article, and then there's a truly strange little tangent about the female talent (or lack thereof?) at TWC and on the new program. Overall, they didn't seem to portray the network or the show in a very positive light, and I was surprised that Mike would send that out.

The new promos TWC is running show that Dave Schwartz, Stephanie Abrams, Dr. Greg Postel, and Dr. Greg Forbes will all be contributing to the show.
-
We're 24 hours away, so here's a bizarre music video for the show:
http://youtu.be/MvMemnkTWuM (http://youtu.be/MvMemnkTWuM)
-
I'm very interested to see how this is going to work out. I like the idea, but based on the promos and that "music video," they are not only going for a geeky theme but also over-the-top cheesy. I guess I was hoping for something a little more professional, but that's obviously not the angle they are approaching this from.
-
Who's watching WU? I like the show but it's in longform form. All of WATT is there but only 1 LO8 at 5:18, not even a LO8 at the end of WCL. I think WU would be better at 8 Est.
-
I was only able to see the last half hour or so, but I was really impressed. All weather (kinda like old TWC) in a fresh way. Dave's segment was great, Sarah is decent on TV, and the set actually looks good. Frankly, I didn't mind the longform format; the locals are so crappy nowadays, and most of the info is in the LDL.
This should be in primetime. They could've easily done 7-9, and kept the same WCL shifts of 10-1, 1-4, 4-7. If the ratings were good, I wonder if a third hour could be in the cards. Too bad they're seemingly allergic to doing live weather in primetime.
-
I would say that I ended up watching about half of Weather Underground last night. (I was switching back and forth between WU and the Little League World Series.) For what I saw in the 1st hour, I was not that impressed. I thought the show would be more emphatic (you know...nerds nerding out completely on weather.) But at the same time, I did think the 2nd hour came more alive and got into a better flow. Dave's WOW (Wonder-Of-Weather) segment was truly educational and highly enjoyable! I felt kinda bad for the Co-Founder of weather underground who was stuck there last night. He gave some commentary but I got the feeling he was either bored there or just did not care to be there. Overall, I do think Weather Underground is better than the lousy last hour/team of Weather Center Live. You could always tell no one put any effort into the 7pm show because of the lack of tracking the radar, Keith Carson's endless attempts to be funny and lately there has been plenty of teleprompter stumbles. I definitely know I will not watch every minute of WU every day, but I can see myself tuning in more often to seeing what they are up too. Especially if Dave is going to do another Dave's WOW segment.
Oh yeah, and of course Mike Bettes is fine and all...he knows how to host a show and does a great job. I personally though feel that WU is just another wonderful opportunity for Mike B to inflate his ego. Sarah Dillingham was great. Apparently she is the one who does most of the keeping track of current weather in progress. And Brian and Greg are fine too. I think WU has some potential but of course the ratings is what will drive their future.
P.S. - I'm thrilled that Dave and Alex's WCL is kept at three hours, I was worried their block would get cut but nope...they are simply now on from 3-6pm eastern.
-
I think it's kind of interesting. The bar with the root beer tap is a chuckle.
"Greg, we need to keep you here for a while at the bar. Sarah is pouring you a root beer"
It should have been Stephanie, but now with Wake Up With Al cancelled, who knows?
-
By far my favorite part of Weather Underground is every night when Dave does his weather WOW (wonders of weather) if you have a few moments each weeknight free between 7:42pm (eastern) and like 7:47pm (eastern) catching Dave's segment (in my opinion) is really worth it. Did anyone know that Dave Schwartz is left handed before he started on Weather Underground? LOL. And his writing is sooo neat...kinda like a school teachers and even mine.
-
This show is fun to watch. Its everyday weather and the viewers get to help choose topics. Sarah and Mike are a perfect team.

I couldn't agree more! Here's hoping they'll expand it to 3 hours in the upcoming shakeup.
-
I finally got a chance to check the show out...and I like it. I really like it. The set's a bit "dark", but it flows and I get what they were trying to do. This is what I like to see from a live weather show.
