I'll go ahead and start a new thread on what may be a very interesting show!
LIGHTNING ROD, hosted by former TWC radio meteorologist Mark Elliot is basically a show that all about the weather and how it affects your area. It's a fast-paced show. You can interact and discuss with Mark using Facebook, Twitter, skype, etc.
Via Mark's Twitter (@MarkElliotTWC (http://twitter.com/MarkElliotTWC)), the show will debut this June, but did not say the exact date yet. But it will air Monday-Thursday 10-11 pm ET.
The show now has a twitter, (@TWCLightningRod (http://twitter.com/TWCLightningRod)) and he may be working on a facebook. I'll ask him when I get a chance.
btw.. <333 the logo of it!!!
-
The timing could be better but interesting show at least
-
Sounds interesting. I also wonder if they're going to keep long-form at 11 PM ET and eliminate the two-OCM Weather Center, leaving only a solo OCM show at Midnight ET.
-
Funny how this show is named after Nimmy :bleh:
-
Great! More long form.. exactly what we need with The Weather Channel.
Before I was only slightly irritated, now about 90% of the time, The Weather Channel isn't The Weather Channel, its never about the weather anymore...
Honestly, I am fed up with it.. :censored:

Its a it frustrating but at this point what can you do. If I have to see long form it might as well be interesting!

There's some pictures on there. I wonder where that set is. Possibly the former Weekend View studio?

That definitely looks like the former WV/A&B studio...

According to Kyle "(3:03:54 AM) ksmithtwc@gmail.com The show is done from NY at NBC"
-
According to the Twitter, it looks like the premiere has been pushed back to July.

I figured that would happen considering I have yet to see a commercial for the show.
-
How come this new show is being called "Lightning Rod" just out of curiosity? Is it a nickname for Mark Elliot on the radio as a meteorologist, or is it just a random title that was assigned to this show?

I don't know, but it sure is a random name for a show I'll tell you that.
-
If anything, it happens to be nimmy,s username here. :P

Mark just posted some new pics on FB of what looks like is the STUDIO (http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs067.ash2/36712_135074633178289_110264172326002_305283_6738285_n.jpg)! I gotta say this... I LOVE it. It's so pretty!

Looks like they recycled parts of the old Weekend View studio.

Its original name was "Weather Files"
-
Its original name was "Weather Files"
Okay, that was probably a good decision to change the title name, because all I'm thinking about when I see that original name is "X-Files." :P
-
The debut is set for Monday, July 12th per the Zap2It guide.
(EDIT: I looked a little deeper in the schedule and found out that it will re-air at 1 AM ET. Is the 11 PM show going to be live or recorded earlier in the day?)
-
I think that the 1 AM re-airing is for the west coasters (like me :P). I doubt it's gonna be live. It's kinda late.

Here's a little set comparison I threw together...

Not to mention it's the same exact camera/teleprompter. The prompter has yellow tape on it and doesn't have an autoscript logo like the other new prompters. Interesting.
-
Interesting that you pointed that out. Very good observation!
If it truly is the same set, it's great that they recycle the old set, since it wasn't in use for THAT long.

even though that may be the case, me and Springy are having trouble believing this thing takes place in NY and not the actual former Weekend View room in Atlanta. Why would they ship an entire studio structure to NY? Did they? If they didn't, then why lie to the potential viewers? Why not utilize the walk-in closet, erm, I mean WUWA studio like A&B utilized the Weekend View room in 2006 with movable walls and such? I think that is enough questions for now....
-
The originally scheduled premiere on July 12th has been scratched from the schedule, which means it will be at least another week later. These constant postponements are getting annoying.
-
Lightning Rod has been placed back on the schedule for the week of August 16th - will it actually happen? Stay tuned to find out! :P
-
8/16 is labeled as Off Air @ 10pm where Lightning Rod is supposed to be listed.

The title reminds me of something like that too. lol. :P

AMAZING segment debut just now on Weather Center. If you missed it, don't worry, you can catch them on 8:40, and 9:40 eastern.
The lower 3rds with the lightning animation are so pretty.
-
The segment was great but what I don't under stand is: Is LR going to be actual show or just a segment on WC? Or are they starting slow with LR with putting them on WC first?
-
Is anyone joining the chat? I joined the "Ask TWC" chat just to see how stupid some of the questions viewers are asking. IIRC, someone asked what is "Local On The 8's". I'm sorry, but if you are in a TWC chat, you should know that.
-
I would rather this be its own show. But is it just going to be two people talking (like tonight), or will it have some "action"? :dunno:
P.S. Is this chat all about TWC or just about Lightning Rod in general? Because if it is a LR chat, why would someone be asking what LOT8s is?

You always get nuts when doing anything regarding network tv. Amazing some of the things you see people posting to the OCM FB pages for example. I don't get why its a segment now after they put so much work and effort into it.

You guys arent taking to the fact that this someone isnt a normal TWC fan like us and that they could be satellite subscribers

I do agree, they're just curious about it.
Also... wtf @ today's top 4. I literally laughed at #4 ...which is about Chinchilla poop.

OK, so is "Lightning Rod" the same thing or different as these "Weather or Not" segments that, according to weather.com, have a set time to appear on Weather Center (7:40, 8:40, & 9:40)? :dunno: Don't both segments have the same hosts?
-

Yes, it is called Lightning Rod: Weather or Not.
I am not a fan of this segment. It's kind of an awkward segment between the two hosts in my opinion. When I watched this segment, it seemed they were talking back and fourth amongst themselves and not talking to the viewer. However, they did incorporate some viewer ideas in the show, which is great. I am all for interactivity. I am just not for this segment.
I can see why this is not an actual show :P

I caught it Monday and I agree it was very awkward especially between the two.

Well, my phone got a twitter direct message this morning and it said that I got a direct message from Mark, asking me what I thought about the show. I told him that it was great. Then he writes me back that they'll "still be in extended building period" (meaning the show is still yet to be approved). They could really use some suggestions, as I see that they're in their third week of Ranting and Raining.
Although I do enjoy the segments on WC, what about you? What do you think?
-
Lightning Rod will start doing segments on Fridays due to high ratings. Not sure if it's this Friday or the next.
-
I'm not quite sure what you mean, as Lightning Rod has been doing their "Ranting & Raining" segment for a while now. If you mean new segments, then that would be nice.
-

Yeah, their "Ranting & Raining" segments have gotten high ratings. It has been quite popular lately, which is why the segments have been going for a month or so now. I am not sure if they're gonna air new segments soon, though, but I think they're gonna continue with Ranting & Raining.
Oh, btw, they answered your question on Tuesday on air (the difference between sleet & freezing rain).
-
Lightning Rod really needs to be its own thirty-minute show, especially if it has high ratings.
And from reading the posts above, I guess this is still a debated topic. :hmm:
-
Ha-ha, I'm so glad they actually chose to answer it. I asked it a day or so before they answered it on the show, so I didn't think they would. I really like the segment, and I wish it wasn't so rushed because of the top 5 videos of the day. They could answer so many more questions.
-
Lightning Rod is a joke. They answer one question and play it every hour during Weather Center. Couldn't they at least mix it up? And like Matt previously said, the woman on Lightning Rod is a horrible anchor.
-
So they do replay the same answer every hour. (I don't like how Contessa, Alex, and Courtney are live on Wake Up With Al but not on Your Weather Today's news segments.) I don't think Mary Cobb is the best anchor in the world, but I don't think I'd like Mark Elliot running the segment solo. I like the interactive with the audience part the most about Lightning Rod, but I wouldn't bet on the segment being around for too long. How long was Flick and a Forecast around? Three weeks? I hope Lightning Rod can stick around longer than that, though; and I think as long as ratings remain high, it should stick around for a while.
-

Yeah, I am not a fan. I don't really understand the point of the segment. But, apparently it is popular. What ever floats TWC's boat (or what ever pays their bills :P )
-
Apparently I had to add something to the topic name. I have some bad, bad news.
To quote Mark Elliot from his Facebook:
We are sad to report that the Lightning Rod segment...show...whatever you want to call it has come to an end due to programming circumstances. The LR Team wants you all to know how much we appreciate your questions, comments, support, etc. Please continue to use The Weather Channel as your source for all weather-news! Until next time...good-bye :(
He worked so hard on his contribution to the show, but basically, TWC did not approve the show. Sometime later today I'm going to DM him on twitter.
-
That's too bad, although not completely unexpected. I hope they have something else for Mark to do now that Lightning Rod has been canceled. Does he still do radio and broadband forecasts?
-
It's sad they canned it that quickly :itsok:
-
I am not all too surprised. I am a little surprised, because from what I understood, the segment was pretty popular. I did not liek the segment at all. I felt it was awkward between the two hosts, and had nothing to do with weather. Of course, that was the one time I actually saw the segment, so I can't judge too much.
I hope Mark has something else to do with TWC, he seems pretty good.
Sidenote: what is "DM" (I am obviously not a twitter-er, tweeter, whatever. :P )
-

Direct Message.
Speaking of that, I was able to keep in touch with Mark earlier today. He's gonna continue his work at Weather Center because of the crazy storms up north, but meanwhile, he is still looking for something else to do. No word that he's going back to radio, though.
-
So lets get this straight.... TWC spent thousands on revamping part of the studio, getting fancy gizmos, running promos, designing snazzy graphics packages for a show that never aired. Nice

Yeah, that's the basics. They spent useless money on that, which is sad, though.

Old habits die hard I guess, it's no wonder they have to keep letting good senior OCMs go to hire cheaper new ones. :P

They'll find use for the studio sometime in the future. Did they also cancel Stephanie Abrams ms. wizard?

Is there a reason why TWC didn't "approve" it? Was it ratings?

ratings, plus audience dislike. Apparently all that focus group testing didn't do any good.

doubtful afiak. Steph is a high rated OCM at TWC.
-
Mark Elliot was in the newsroom earlier on WC.
I wish Landmark Communications was still TWC's mother company. But of course, we can only dream that. I hope pre-2005 TWC is having a good time in heaven. :P
-
Was Lightning Rod supposed to be just a longer version of the "talk show" segments on WC? :dunno: Because that's not what the video from TWC MediaKit (made several months ago) said about LR. Anyways, maybe TWC was smart in showing the segments before the full show to get viewer feedback before launching something the public wouldn't like. I thought someone said ratings for this thing were high though...what happened???
-
I have dibs on the surface.
-
Mark Elliot was in the newsroom earlier on WC.
He's gonna be there for a while from now on, until he is given something else to do.
