Title: 23.5 Degrees with Sam Champion
Post by: alex979 on January 13, 2016, 03:49:35 PM
Sam Champion's new evening show now has a name: 23.5 Degrees. It's a reference to the angle of the tilt of the Earth. The show will debut in Feburary, but a timeslot is not yet known. It will be shot in both NYC and Atlanta, featuring multiple interviews that are each 10-15 minutes long. Also mentioned in the article: more on his week back at GMA, and some more about AMHQ.

My concern is them re-playing WUTV at 10pm-12am. I am not sure how that would work as the program does include live radar segments. One thought is they would pull a WUWA, and chop the 6-8pm weather update segments (normally with Alexandra) for a late update by someone (like Nick Walker).

This is good news. WUTV is really the best thing they've got going for them right now, and while I'd rather see it be a 3 hour show, a replay of it is better than longform.

But, there will be two hours to fill in between (8-10 ET). 23.5 is once a week, and I'm pretty sure it's just one hour. So, I'm thinking there will be still be some longform, unless they do a live hour of WCL or something.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Wilson won't stay around until midnight, so they'll probably have Keith or Nick do some live updates. I'm not crazy about that idea, though... I feel like it might screw up the banter/pacing on the show and make it kind of awkward and disjointed.

I just watched Mike's post show live chat on Facebook from earlier, and he said the late rerun is a "limited engagement" for one week only. Apparently it's a trial run. He also said he has no idea when 23.5 with Sam is starting.

My TV Guide has Weather Underground scheduled for 7-9PM PT (10PM-12AM ET) on Leap Day, however it says So You Think You'd Survive? from 5-7PM PT. I imagine that time slot is going to be updated later for Champion's new show.

They showed a sneak peek of this show on GMA this morning. Sam said it should start the third week in March on TWC.

23.5 Degrees doesn't look like it's even gonna be on tonight, however my TV guide says the program will air at 8PM PDT (11PM EDT) on March 22nd for an hour, then at 9:30AM PDT on March 27th for a half hour.

The show will launch next Tuesday at 11PMET. I'm not sure why the show will be airing this late in the evening and it's timeslot has a potential to have low ratings.

looks like The Weather Channel is forced to move it to late night to "Burn off" the remainder of Sam Champion's contract. if this thing does get canceled, then TWC should just release Sam from his contract and send him back to ABC News where he belongs. the guy's done two fill in stints with Good Morning America since he left AMHQ and was replaced by Stephanie Abrams.

i bet you money he's in his last year on his contract or they recently agree not to renew it when it expires.

The writing was on the wall over a year ago imo. I hate that this move for Sam Champion didn't work out the way he and TWC hoped that it would especially considering TWC had to have dumped a crap-load of money into Sam's lap to make ABC basically say, "We love ya Sam, but we can't compete with that offer.". I still wish him the best in whatever his future plans may be.

The only problem with your thoughts on him going back to GMA to his old job is that would mean having to kick Ginger Zee to the curb since she was promoted to his position from weekend GMA. I highly doubt they'll risk pulling an Ann Curry debacle like TODAY did on NBC just to bring Sam back. That doesn't mean he still won't make occasional appearances here and there, but I don't see him (or ABC) offering to have him return to GMA full time.

The irony is I say of all of this and guess who's filling in for Ginger Zee this morning? Sam Champion. Of course the only reason here's there today and possibly for the next several weeks is because Ginger Zee is competing on Dancing With The Stars (and let's not forget a ratings boost).

bumping this as news broke today that Sam is leaving The Weather Channel.

it's safe to say either this show has been canceled or is about to get a reboot with a new host, but that depended on the ratings on the show and i wouldn't be surprised if it's got very low ratings.
