General Weather Chat / Friday's North Eastern Storm
« on: February 02, 2008, 09:52:30 PM »
So I'm sure all of us are aware of the winter storm that started off in Texas and made it's it was to the North East and up in to Canada this past Friday.

Once it moved in to Canada Southern Ontario was being hit by heavy, blowing snow and freezing rain in some places. The was expected to ease off by the evening hours as it headed eastward towards the Maritimes. It did ease up but the snow was still falling in to the overnight hours. Eastern Ontario and Southern Quebec were expected to get between 30 -35cm of snow through Friday evening.

The final snow fall amounts were 29cm for Quebec and 27cm of snow for Ottawa, Ontario (Where I live).

I'm not sure how many people on this forum are aware of this, but I am on contract with both TWN and TWC as an ENG (Electronic News Gathering) shooter which basically means in the event of severe weather I am called and asked to shoot the weather on camera, I have been doing this for nearly six years now.

Thursday night I was assigned the storm, and was out with my camera kit.. 1 camera, 8 batteries, and 6 hour long tapes at 4am Friday morning, even though the snow did not start until about 10:30AM. The day ended for me at around 10:00PM last night, and then this morning I shot some aftermath stuff for about 30 minutes.

My footage went on air nationally yesterday on both networks everyhour, and this morning... It's still airing from time to time as I type this.

Here is a video montage of some key points from yesterday / today:

General Discussion / KSMI Weather Channel STAR Software
« on: January 04, 2008, 05:06:07 PM »
As many people are aware, I and a team of broadcast technicians have been working to bring the KSMI Weather Channel, powered by The KSMI Weather Service.

We have been working on a STAR system which brings localized weather, highway, ski, and environmental data atop a national feed on a TV screen.

The system is currently avaiable only for TV's powered by set top boxes.

However, it seems that alot of viewers will tend to watch the channel via the web as the option for a set top box is not present or the funds to get one are not present.

I am thinking about taking the STAR software and re-writing it to work on a desktop computer as an executable (.exe) program.

The systems (and applications) would still be managed in the same manner, and would be activated, maintained, and controlled by KSMI Network Control.

The systems currently relies on a 24/7 - 2 way data feed between KSMI and the Unit, this data feed includes information regarding weather data, and what the unit should display; and when. Becuase there is no way of getting the video feed to the program (.exe) without going over the internet, or spending hundreds of dollars;  this data link is no longer existant. The internet would have to do both receive the video, and data which would need to meet certain speed expectations.

System Requirements:
  • Pentium 3 (or higher)
  • 256MB of RAM (or higher)
  • DSL, or cable modem. (High speed)
  • Screen Resolution of 1024 X 768 or Higher (Program would run at 800X600

Please vote above what you think.

If you have any questions, at all, please post them.

It seriously looks like something you would see on a box of cerial.. "Tropical Storm Ernesto Loops"

Also, check out the video below and watch for the dissolve from that image to Jim on location.. It looks like that flag was done in paint..

Here is the original video that picture came from:

You see the flag in discussion at 2:16

"Hello Children, well it seems our friend Mr. Rogers.. Uhmmm I mear Dr. Lyons has a tropical update for us now.."
(I think this is Vivian) Vivian: "Yeah! This time last month [...]"

Video 3:

That sentence "The time to prepare is over." scares the living  :censored: out of me.. can you imagine seeing that scroll across the bottom of your screen.. I'll bet ya that makes you feel good..

Link to that video:

General Discussion / Opening programs..
« on: August 04, 2007, 07:59:11 PM »
Hey everyone, I've got a quick question about launching programs under Windows XP..

I have a program called fullscreen.exe which just takes my capture card video, and makes it fullscreen. The problem is that by default it gives its self "Always on top" status which I dont want, this can be easily removed by pressing "T" on the keyboard.

The problem is the computer that runs this program doesnt have a keyboard and is not monitored by a person so I want to know what I need to type in to program shortcut on my desktop so that when it launches it also presses T.

I know some programs have things like:
powerpoint.exe /s which would result in rather or not powerpoint shows its splash screen when it loads..

What I am looking for it something like:
fullscreen.exe /t

Any help is appreciated!
