General Weather Chat / Recommended weather sites

Excluding the big ones like TWC, AccuWeather, and Weather Underground, can anyone recommend some good weather websites? Thanks!

TWC Classics News / TWC Classics relaunch
« on: October 27, 2012, 05:29:48 PM »
I would like to change the focus of TWCC from TWC nostalgia to memorable weather events. TWC would still be the primary source of content, but I'd also use other content when available. Examples of this other content would include local stations, other cable channels, and amateur footage. And if I can master Photoshop, I'd create my own maps and charts. The idea is a combination of the memorable storms area I added awhile back, as well as my timeline idea from last month. The former of which was inspired by Ray's Weather Archive, with help from my friend Alex.

The problem is that I don't know if I can do this without re-organizing the site. Here's the things I want to do. Can anyone think of a way to accomplish this without re-organizing? Thanks!

- Organize local forecast clips by playlist date, and combine them with audio clips
- Post emulated local forecasts on a regular basis
- Post news/rumors about TWC, as well as news about current major weather events
- Create a weather 101 area, where common questions about the weather are answered
- Expand memorable storms area to include those without names, and include content from local footage, my graphics, etc.
- Create a store area w/reviews and links to weather-related dvds, books, weather instruments, etc.
- Create a section of interesting local forecast screenshots
- Expand OCM screenshots to include one screenshot of each ocm every year (when possible)

General Discussion / Favorite weather fan websites

Do any of you regularly visit a weather fan site? If yes, which one(s)? The only ones I know of are Hardcore Weather and Eastern U.S. Weather, but both of those are message boards.

TWC Classics News / Timeline idea
« on: September 14, 2012, 03:57:22 PM »
When I changed to the current design and site structure, one of the sections I created was "timeline." The idea was to allow fans to get a look at TWC at any point in time (that I had footage from). Right now it's just a bunch of video clips and screenshots, organized by year. I would really like to break it down even further to specific dates and times (if they can be identified). I figure the easiest way for me to do that is by grouping everything by DVD. You can see what I mean with this simple example I threw together:

http://www.twcclassics.com/temp/

With the timeline idea, I think it makes sense to include everything. Not just the promos, station ids, and bumpers that are currently there. Obviously doing this would be a big undertaking on my part. So before I potentially waste weeks of work, I wanted to see if there was any interest in this. Would you like to see everything in one spot, or do you like how everything is scattered in various sections now? Originally, I thought about redoing the structure (which is reflected in the pages at the above link), adding categories and tags to each image and video, so you could see all the WeatherSTAR 4000 videos or all the promos, if you wanted. But I figured restructuring would irritate returning visitors. So now I'm thinking of just re-doing or adding to the existing timeline section. Your thoughts?

General Weather Chat / AccuWeather not so accu
« on: August 06, 2012, 11:25:29 PM »
A month or so ago, I upgraded Firefox. In the process, it disabled the weather.com extension because it was incompatible. So I replaced it with AccuWeather's extension. Maybe it's just my area, but their forecasting is awful! They regularly forecast thunderstorms every few days. Many with high probabilities. Their accuracy so far is about 0 in 50. :noexpression:

Anyone else use this? Is there a better one?

General Discussion / CNN not doing so well
« on: June 08, 2012, 10:44:30 AM »
I never thought I'd say this, but you know your network isn't doing well when your ratings are worse than Oprah. Not exactly surprising considering how silly some of their programming is these days (which Jon Stewart occasionally pokes fun at). Like TWC, they seem rather desperate to attract younger viewers.

I came across this today. Any idea what it is or why it was created. It says auto-generated, so I assume it wasn't started by Martin.

Local Forecast / COLD! icon
« on: February 12, 2012, 09:47:22 PM »
Just when I thought I had seen everything from the classic days, Nick shows me this. A screen shot of a new (to me) icon from the Nov 92 set. You've likely seen the HOT! icon, well here's the COLD! icon. For those of you that were alive in '94, you'll recall this was during the historic cold outbreak that helped break all-time records across the mid-west, Ohio Valley, and Northeast.

TWC Classics News / New content
« on: January 27, 2012, 03:26:31 PM »
A fair amount of new content will be up on the site late tonight/early tomorrow. There will also be a new search feature. Rather than using FreeFind, as I have for the last year or so, I'll be using my own. This will work similar to the one on the classic/archive site. Finally, there will be a new storm page. This one on Hurricane Andrew.

TWC Classics News / TWCC Archives
« on: December 06, 2011, 02:16:00 PM »
After experiencing much frustration with constant changes to sites I frequent (YouTube, Google, and Facebook), I have decided to add an "archives" area to the site. This will contain a slightly modified version of the site from last year (see attached screen shot). This way, features that no longer exist on the current site will still be available to you, such as the Way Back Play Back. The only thing I'm not able to bring back is the forums. The database backup I saved was corrupt/incomplete, leaving hundreds of topics blank.

My only question is whether or not it would make sense to update the pages that still exist. For example, there have been numerous videos added to the "local forecast" area in the past year. Would it be helpful to have those updates reflected in the archived area? Or would you prefer to use it to only view content that no longer exists?

General Weather Chat / 1991 Halloween Blizzard
« on: October 31, 2011, 03:53:40 PM »
I'm surprised no one has brought this up, but today is the 20th anniversary of the Halloween Blizzard that brought major snows to the upper mid-west. The storm was thanks in large part to an arctic cold front that passed through the area a few days prior, as well as the "Perfect Storm" spinning off the east coast (preventing any storms from moving east). To commemorate the event, I created a page about it on my site. Complete with video clips of TWC covering the storm from start to finish.

General Discussion / YouTube subscriptions
« on: September 15, 2011, 10:55:26 AM »
For all that subscribe to at least one person's videos on YouTube -- is your subscription page now showing new videos from people you didn't subscribe to? Mine is now also showing new videos from friends and people who've subscribed to me. WTF!? It's annoying enough that I have to weed through videos I've already watched, but now I have to weed through videos I didn't even ask to see!? :censored:

Questions, Comments, Suggestions / Should the TWCC presence stay?
« on: September 10, 2011, 09:50:53 PM »
As you all know, TWCC merged with this forum almost two years ago. The reason for the merge was due to a big drop in activity. It was my hope that the merge would result in more discussion. For whatever reason, that hasn't happened. It seem that the only time classic TWC is brought up is when I post something about my site. And even then, I have to make a sarcastic reply to get a response.

That being said, I would like to get your honest opinion. Should the TWCC presence remain or should it be removed? By presence, I'm talking about the TWCC subforums and the "TWC Classics" in the logo. I discussed this with Martin a few weeks ago and we agreed to give it some time. Having done that, I've seen no change. So I thought I'd ask the community.

Regardless of what you have to say, I am not bitter or angry. I have no problem with this forum or any of its members. If no one really wants to talk about classic TWC, so be it. I am grateful to Martin and the original members for welcoming me and my members here. :)

Questions, Comments, Suggestions / Proposed new navigation
« on: September 06, 2011, 11:46:30 AM »
Since there are several loyal TWCC visitors here, I thought I'd post this and get your thoughts. I am proposing a new structure/navigation to the site, which is listed below. The reason being that TWCC has, for the most part, always been a "nostalgia" site. The current navigation doesn't serve that purpose very well. For example, if you wanted to take a look back at 1995, you could end up visiting 10-20 pages! I was thinking that it would be nice if it was all in one place. So here's what I'm proposing. I've only included the main categories. Let me know what you think.

local forecast
-----videos
-----playlists
-----flavors

timeline (will include title cards, bumpers, intros, promos, etc)
-----1986-1991 (For Everything You Do)
-----1991-1996 (Weather You Can Always Turn To)
-----1996-1998 (No Place on Earth Has Better Weather)

business-travel-forecast
-----videos
-----images
-----playlists

weather
-----stats
-----storms
-----classroom

misc
-----downloads (avatars, icons, fonts)
-----former-ocms
-----segments-and-filler

The "weather" section will likely be a later project, since I don't have much content for it for now.

General Discussion / NWS website redesign
« on: August 15, 2011, 12:27:40 AM »
I was on the NWS website and noticed that they're redesigning. They've posted samples for visitors to look at and comment on. Although there's no place to comment. Personally, I think the proposed design stinks. What are your thoughts?
