General Discussion / Re: Gas prices in your area
« on: January 17, 2015, 06:08:46 PM »
$1.59 is the cheapest I've seen here in Oklahoma (Moore to be specific).  I read online where the end may be in sight to the falling gas prices.

I don't see why long-form automatically has to come into the discussion of demoting OCMs or letting them go.  I mean, I understand the argument, but unless TWC has let more people go behind our backs, they seem to have a lot of "floater" or "fill-in" meteorologists.  So, as we saw in the past, it looks like they are again letting veteran OCMs go and bringing in new ones to pay them half of what they paid the veterans.

While I understand that this is how the TV business works, it just frustrates me.  No offense to some of the OCMs on TWC right now, but some of the new ones don't have as much of a sense of professionalism as the veterans and annoy me.  Yes, it probably takes time to develop that professionalism, but I personally would like to tune-in to weather to see someone who knows what they're talking about, not someone who's just reading off of a script.  Sadly though, I guess this is just what TV has become.

Great. Let's keep cutting professional meteorologists who do a good job so that we can make room for more clowns.  At least they haven't been laid-off completely, but I wonder what a "contributor" role entails?

Four hours?!  Why not three?

Excuse me, I guess it is three. Whatever the case, the West feed is meant for West Coast viewers. I think that was the point that was trying to be made.

For those who have DirecTV, if you don't mind entertaining an ignorant question, What is the difference between say, Cartoon Network (East) and Cartoon Network (West) for example. Is it related to time zones where the east is for Eastern time and the West is for Western time?

Yes.  This is the case with U-Verse too.  In most cases, you'll notice that the West channel plays exactly the same shows, commercials, etc. as the East channel but is four hours behind.  So essentially, it's on a four-hour delay for West Coast viewers.  Makes it nice when you miss a show on the East channel but can catch it again on the West channel. :P

Looks like I'll have to change my TV provider tag to DirecTV in my profile going into 2015 very soon... :whistling: One month has passed since saying goodbye to Crapcast.  :harhar:

And, soon enough, you'll have to change your TV provider tag from DirecTV to AT&T, assuming that AT&T acquires DirecTV. :P

To save money I would assume. When it comes to STARs, they would only have to worry about maintaining the IS2 rather than the IS/IS2 together on different feeds. That's just my guess though.

Yeah.  I think it's a whole lot easier just having to deal with one "feed" or format.  As has been discussed here a lot, many other stations just letterbox their HD feed for SD, ESPN/ESPN2 being a prime example that comes to my mind at this point.

Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion
« on: November 13, 2014, 05:46:30 PM »
To this day, I don't think I will ever, ever understand why TWC cut back on the LOT8s and dumbed it down.  A few years ago (or more like several at this point) in the HD promotional video, Jim Cantore said he thinks the LOT8s is the number one reason why people tune in to The Weather Channel.  Well, if that's the case, then why did they reduce the length of the LFs to one-minute only, and why are they wasting practically half of this minute with a dumb Welcome screen and even more useless hashtag screen?  I just don't get it.  Is the LOT8s just too expensive to maintain or something?

Personally, I don't have a problem with the removal/replacement of legacy STARs.  Yes, I know it removes even more pieces of the "classic TWC" we all knew and loved, but that had to happen soon enough, as the old systems were certainly showing their age and probably difficult to maintain with the ever-advancing technology.  However, at this rate, I think I would certainly prefer a WeatherSTAR 4000 (especially an XL) over the junk they show now.

Why am I getting totally different graphics on the SD feed as compared to those on the HD feed? I realize these were special DST/Halloween-only graphics but I did not see them in the IS2/IS clips posted above (which were captured at the same time). Like the music too!
Weather Channel November 2014 Morning 1 - 10

Off topic, but I really like the first song - a jazz arrangmenet of Pharrell Williams' "Happy."  I feel like TWC could make the best of both worlds in terms of their LOT8s music if they use jazz arrangements of pop hits.

Seen on my Istar II on weds night

Ugh, is that an entire-ad background?  TWC seems to be using those a lot lately, especially on their mobile app.
I dislike it, but I know they probably get boatloads of money for using those.

Oklahoma City/central Oklahoma has basically seen the transition from summer to winter within a week.  The high last Saturday was a record-shattering 92 degrees, with the low this morning near freezing at OKC Will Rogers World Airport.  While the airport did not officially fall to the freezing mark this morning, many surrounding areas (such as Norman) did record lows in the upper-20s or lower-30s.  The extended forecast looks like the cooler weather is here to stay.
