General Weather Chat / Re: Recommended weather sites

http://www.weather.gov/, which is the National Weather Service's site, is a great site with a lot of weather information. Just click on the area of the U.S. map where you live, and it will take you to your local NWS office webpage, and features many forecasts, forecast discussions, etc.

If you look in that video at 3 minutes and 11 seconds, there's a clip of Rich Johnson that came from this very website.

TWC Meltodown Video

Other than that, it's great to see he's back on TV :)
What year was this video?

That video was from the TWC meltdown of January 22, 2008.

Anyways, congradulations to Rich Johnson! He was a great TWC on-camera personality, and I enjoyed watching him on there. Hopefully the viewers of that station will like him just as well!

General Weather Chat / Re: Weather Photo Thread

I took this picture on March 15, 2012. Relatively slow-moving, but severe thunderstorms developed that afternoon/evening, producing very large hail, localized flash flooding, and a few tornadoes, including an EF-0 in Ida, MI, which is barely 5 miles to my west, an EF-2 in Columbiaville, MI, and an EF-3 in Dexter, MI (just northwest of Ann Arbor.) Some of the hailstones I measured were up to ping pong ball size, or 1.5" in diameter!

My Norton subscription expires in a week and I'm debating if it's worth spending the extra $60 to renew it. Has anyone tried Microsoft security essentials? Is it any good especially on Windows 8?
McAfee, while in some cases is more expensive than Norton, is definitely better. Even Avast, which is free, is worth trying.

After a jump to $3.95 on Saturday, they are back down to $3.85.

Local Forecast / Re: IntelliStar I and II Update planned
« on: February 18, 2013, 01:12:41 PM »
That topic has been taken off of weatheraffiliate.com. Either the update has been delayed, or has been cancelled. Hopefully the latter, since the IntelliStar graphics are fine just they way they are. We wouldn't want the IS's to be too graphics to be too "high tech"/cluttered.

Everything Else TWC / TWC - Analog to Digital Transition in 2013
« on: February 18, 2013, 12:56:09 PM »
According to weatheraffiliate.com, The Weather Channel will be transitioning their analog feed to digital this year.

February 5, 2013

The Weather Channel is migrating from analog to digital in 2013!

We are currently testing our analog signal and if you take the analog feed and are experiencing an interruption in service, you must confirm that your headend is active.

Please contact Star Support immediately at 1-800-554-xxxx or email {email address}@weather.com

Thank you - The Weather Channel

I wonder how much this will affect the STAR's, if at all? Also, I wonder if there will be any disruptions during the conversion?

Spiked quite a bit in Monroe, MI. It was $3.39 yesterday, but $3.75 today. That's a $0.36 increase in 24 hours!

Thanks for the advice guys, I really appreciate it. I have never heard of the WFO before until now.

Is working for the NWS really that stressful? I don't want to come across rude if I'm asking this.

Also for grad school would majoring in Physics undergrad and for a Meteorology Masters/PhD degree recommended? I am not making any choices solely from these options but I just wanted to hear some feedback or thoughts about this. Going to see a career counselor tomorrow morning for more discussion.
From what I hear, the frequent schedule changes is probably the worst downside to working at the NWS. Also, a masters degree in meteorology or a related a field (such as physics) really increases your chances of getting a better job. That's also what I've heard from a few NWS mets.
