Was it in HD?

At 3:40 PM ET, it looks like the lights at the chroma key were way too bright for a minute or so. Everything was washed out and for the rest of the segment Vivian took a step off the screen, even though it looks like they lowered the level of the lights.

Yeah, I saw that as well; that Hurricane Central wall is so buggy.

I was just watching the end of yesterday morning's FO, and to paraphrase Jen...

"We've been over [in the HD studio] rehearsing, so you should see us in HD pretty soon."

Interesting, I would assume FO rehearsals means that they're within 2-3 weeks of going HD, and I wouldn't be surprised if they go HD even before Weekend View; perhaps it could be as early as Monday.

Few people know this, but Rich Johnson's success at The Weather Channel was actually the lucky result of his past failure. Prior to joining TWC, Rich actually worked as a computer programmer and wrote the short-lived WANG command-line operating system in 1982. However, his major failure from a usability standpoint came when Rich went to write the various prompts. For example, for a "Would you like to perform this action?" prompt, Rich deviated from the standard "y/n" response and instead gave the user the choices "Yeah, let's do that/No, let's not do that."

With such complicated prompts for the user to type in, the project was doomed to failure. Within months, Rich abandoned the project and was subsequently hired at TWC as a graphics technician, thus beginning his long-tenured career as a meteorologist there.

...it's a joke, obviously... :P

It appears they're using new, smaller L3s that are shifted to the left today.

EE has been using the daytime version all night...

Anybody catch the end of PM Edition? Betty and Sam were messing around with Mike Bettes, who was off camera, and then at the very end Mike B. went between Betty and Sam and waved while Mike Seidel walked by in the background. I wish I had been paying attention, and on top of that, my buffer was recording the wrong channel, so I can't play it back or record it.

The new receivers actually handle bad weather better now, so it takes a hefty storm to knock the signal out, and that's what passed through yesterday. I haven't had problems with snow in years.

The receivers have nothing to do with anything. The problem occurs when the signal can't get from the satellite in space to your satellite dish.  The receiver has no part in the process.

They actually do; I used to have both new boxes and old boxes hooked up at the same time, and when bad weather came in, the newer boxes would hold up better than the old ones. They apparently handle poorer signals better.

Sharon: Now let's take you to one final stop where it's quite cool, and that's the West.

Rich: Yeah, let's do that.

Strange. Watching the 2 AM ET rebroadcast and some of Julie Martin's recorded shots were in HD, but others were in SD with the |HD| pillarbox bars on the sides of the screen.

You're up late. :P

That was stupid: On EEWC, they used Titan to display flood watches, but it also wound up displaying severe thunderstorm warnings as well; the rebroadcast is going to be giving a lot of people expired information now.

Hey, at least I get all the HD channels first, and the outage doesn't require a human being to fix hours later...

They used the "Tornado Alley" music when going to a break on WC today. Yay for Stephen Arnold!

i was able to finally see the first outlook graphics - and imo they're pretty bad. idk what it is, it just doesn't have that "first outlook" feel.
Agreed. It doesn't have that "early morning" or "business travel" feel, if you get what I mean.

The original package had that feel the most, but alas, times have changed. I think the new package captures the feeling somewhat...
