Everything Else TWC / Re: Is TWC dying?
« on: September 01, 2015, 08:32:46 AM »
I hear a lot about cable in general dying.  People often cite costs and the internet as reasons, but no one considers that perhaps people don't want the kind of programming that's on cable now.  Case in point: TWC's change in direction.

Other channels have deteriorated in a similar fashion, but TWC's metamorphosis seems more egregious to me because it's primary purpose was to provide a service — not simply entertainment per-se.  It has gotten away from providing the service in question, which is was weather forecasting and reporting 24/7 on cable.  I don't really think everything will magically go back to the way it was were TWC to be sold, but anything's bound to beat what we have now.  Even late-00's TWC sounds pretty nice now.

General Discussion / Re: What is the last thing you bought?

A 16 GB USB flash drive at Walmart.  I'm always needing more space, and they're selling them rather cheaply right now with back to school firmly in place.

I bought a Mr. Pibb out of a drink machine and a Milky Way Bar

Good taste there!  I always go for the Pibb when I can find it, although it's kind of scarce where I'm at.

Local Forecast / Re: TWC Songs you've heard in other places

This week, I heard "Pebble Beach" by Vince Guaraldi (Jan. '00 playlist) on KAAM 770 AM as a part of the "Seems Like Old Times" weekly program which was playing summer songs, which "Pebble Beach" is apparently considered.  I got that TWC vibe from the song and sure enough, it had played on TWC.

TWC and your Cable Company / Re: AT&T to acquire DirecTV

This is like putting Ma Bell back together times two.

[W]ith all these mergers happening recently, who knows?

Read it and weep.  It still applies.  My prediction is that they'll retire the DirecTV brand and start calling it UVerse Satellite or something to that effect.

My first 90° day actually ended up happening on June 10.  We've had only a handful of them since then, but the forecast shows that we'll be getting more and more of them starting this week.  Tomorrow is the first of July, after all.

Hi there!  It's good to hear from you, Ralph.  I consider "Tortilla Flat" to be one of my favorite tunes that played on TWC back in the day.

I can't say that I've seen it too many times.   It's quite unusual where I'm at; it's often windy, and on rare occasions when it's not windy, it's calm.  Such a light breeze is rare.

Meteorology sounds like such an exciting career, though people might get mad if you get the forecasts wrong.  Even so, I'm sure it will be a blast.  Good luck, Andy!

The summer outlook has been revised for my area, though not in the direction I would normally expect.  The below normal temperature area that was over me has been replaced with a much below normal region, and the below normal area has expanded.  Is this summer, as strange as it would be for Texas, going to be a dud?  :D  Normally, I would wonder if the 4th of July fireworks displays would be cancelled due to burn bans, but now it seems like a rainout would be more likely.
