OCMs & Personalities / Re: Nicole Mitchell's Last Night
« on: January 16, 2011, 10:12:03 PM »
it is sad....Glad to know Kevin left on his own will and wasn't forced to leave

Although Keven left on his own, he could see the writing on the wall in that TWC kept using him less and less. Has there been any OCM who got removed from a prime spot to do mostly fill-ins, then return to another prime spot later. Maybe Heather Tesch or Carl Parker might be in that category, but not sure.

She didn't mentioned anything about this being her last segment at TWC. Jodi Saeland still wins the departing sign-off of a leaving OCM.

How did she sign off, always was a Saeland fan.

You mean the sign-off for Jodi Saeland. It was a long time ago, but in general it went something like this. Toward the end of her last segment, a cameraman put up a placard saying something like, "we will miss you". After noticing it from the monitor, she couldn't get any words out so TWC went dark for those ending minutes.

Ironic, the symmetry of her last hour's shift. I first noticed her when she joined the TWC working a Saturday afternoon hour's shift solo, and now her last hour she is back doing a solo shift on Saturday night, albiet now a lot of pre-recorded clips. Back then it was just all weather.

Just commented on her Facebook:

TWC Viewer: Dude are u gone? I noticed that they seem to be going with younger and sexier ppl. I thought you were more than qualified.

Nichole: Younger, sexier, and in my case, someone who won't cause an "incovenience" to the company by needing time off for military service. (Of course, no reason was given, but that was the only thing the NBC folks ever complained about in reference to my work performance.)

How can the say an inconvenience when they do PR by showing clips of her in her duties with the Hurricane Hunters.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: New OCM

I remember seeing her on a Saturday afternoon for a wild day of tornadoes in Yazoo City, MS. She was on with Adam Berg, and she did a very credible job on-air that afternoon. I haven't seen her since, but others on the forums have on occasions.

Since Kelly has 2-3 children, will the late night shift be hindersome for her and family? I would think late morning and early afternoon shifts are best for family life.  I doubt if anyone chooses their shifts anymore as maybe then did in the good old days.

After her stint in purgatory fill-in status like Keneely, etc, I wonder what Nicole will end up doing?

She has been juggling military duty and on air work just fine until now. I think it may have been her personal decision to leave. I will miss the Nicole and Paul partnership

Allthough I am definitely out of the loop on the goings-on at TWC, I am not sure if it is entirely personal. Nicole has been giving off some vibes on her Facebook that all may not be well with her and management. Someone ask her the question a few weeks ago if she was leaving because of her passing the Bar, and she responded to the effect that 'not unless management sees otherwise'. Also there has been these little snippets on FB where she disagreed with mgmt. For instance, when responding to a comment by a person who said he preferred weather instead of programs she agreed.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Alexandra Steele Let Go
« on: November 19, 2010, 09:08:02 AM »
I hate dragging this thread out, but in my mind Alexandra was not one of the best OCMs, and definitely should not be grouped as one of the old-timers.  She has only been at TWC 5-7 years. Who did they get rid of to bring her in? I'm thinking she was part of the first wave of what TWC has become. I wouldn't include her as part of the past.

A couple of weeks ago Nicole posted on her FB fan page that the current management views her military duty as being an "inconvenience".  Then 30 minutes later her entry was deleted. I assumed she had second thoughts about posting that, and deleted it herself.

OCMs & Personalities / Speaking of salaries
« on: October 09, 2010, 09:04:34 AM »
Speculation is that high salaries may contribute to OCMs being let-go. What is the salary structure?   I imagine there is a tier structure in place where some of the top OCMs make signicant higher than the rest. Would there be 2 or three tiers. Plus longevity plays a part in higher salaries as well.

What would be the top 5, the median, and the bottom salaries in dollars?    I mean guessing something like 250k and up for the top, 100-125K for the medium, 70-80K for the bottom.

General Weather Chat / Katrina and NOLA
« on: August 30, 2010, 09:54:52 PM »
Admittedly, I live on the Mississippi coast and may be bias on this topic.

Why does NOLA get so much press coverage concerning Katrina, when in actuality it was the levees and not the hurricane that flooded the city. We evacuated the coast early Sunday morning driving up to stay with relatives. Needless to say, we were glued to TWC late that afternoon throughout the next day. Cantore was in Gulfport and Morrow was on the northshore above NOLA reporting. Morrow was reporting only light weather conditions from the storm. Cantore, on the other hand, was in real danger that night, even losing TWC weather van. The next morning there were several reports on TWC saying that NOLA dodged a bullet by being on the west side of the hurricane, escaping the worse. One or two days later the levees broke and flooding began. So, it was the levees being breech and not necessarily Katrina that caused the NOLA catastrophe.

The flooding in NOLA was a major disaster event, but should it be blame completely on Katrina. If the levees did their jobs, NOLA would have been a non-factor in Katrina's history.

Sorry for the rant.

Questions, Comments, Suggestions / Which forum
« on: August 30, 2010, 11:28:40 AM »
to start a thread on whether Katrina and New Orleans have a direct relationship.

I do not see a forum that seems suitable to that kind of thread topic.

This has probably been asked before but it wasn't on the first page of this particular forum.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Poll: Favorite OCM?
« on: August 26, 2010, 08:01:29 PM »
Although I voted for Nicole Mitchell, my TWC favorites were in the past. I used to watch TWC a couple of hours per day; now maybe 30 minutes per month. Is it okay to mention Accuweather here? Ava Dinges is my favorite nowadays.

Jeanetta Jones, Kristina Abernathy, Jodi Sealand (sp), and Jill Brown have to be included in my favorites? Except for Rich Johnston I'm drawing a blank for my favorite men, but there were others.

Do you remember when Jill  Brown was doing a live report and the hurricane eye came right over her position?

OCMs & Personalities / Attempt at perspective
« on: August 25, 2010, 10:48:31 AM »
In putting things in perspective in regards to TWC dismissing many of the likeable long-time OCMs in recent years, can we blame the new ownership entirely for this management style. In a way it appears as if their is definitely a new managing perspective to the network, but hasn't TWC always had turnovers. I remember Rick Griffin and Will Annen as being somewhat stalwarts, but one day they got assigned to the overnight time slot, and eventually disappearing altogether. What happened there. There were others as well.

What was the primary reason for so many OCMs to leave throughout years? Was it them being let go or they were leaving for greener pastures?
